Thanks.

I bought the (a) clone in 2011, from John Wojociechowski.
He might be able to help you, as he was close with Willy.

That car and Willy were are "arch enemies" in 1979. We battled for the division title the whole year. Willy wound up winning the division and the number 11.
But we wound up with the number 1. He was one of the first people we called after winning it.
RIP Willy it was great racing with you.

It was repainted by Alan Dame in 2000 after the racing season because it needed body work to fix some rust. When I showed up at the track with it in 2001 Jim said "It's about time someone painted it".

This IS the W A Lee car that you own. You bought it from Tommy who lives in the Utica, NY area. I have shared much info about the car with Mike. I do like the front plate that was made for the wagon. A great tribute to WA.

Tom...Wow, that's an early shot of the car...I'm gonna guess about 1974 or '75?
Not sure of the place though...can you help?

Think Willy had the car painted twice after that...the next job had the familiar
"WA Lee and Wife" lettering on the car...and then the last had the infamous
upside-down lettering on the car...

How'd I do guys?

Englishtown..Probably 76-77

Alan Signs did the upside down lettering over the next paint job after the one shown here.
Later you will see the lettering blocked out in the Sportsnat's video. Not a repaint per se.

What is really nice about a Chevelle wagon is the fact that the front/rear weight split is definitely an advantage. Easy car to drive too which will make it all the more fun.

I am not familiar with this particular car, is it a big block?

I spoke to Wojo this morning.
he says Liddy sold it to Bob Vogel
Wojo beat Vogel in the 1988 Molson Stock Final
then Vogel sold it to Andy Stinson
Is this Bob Bender`s wagon?

Willie was my Dad... He passed away quickly in Sep 96...environmental lung cancer...all the chemicals used at his carburetor shop. I came across Phil and the new owner Mike when I posted a pic of my Dad and his car in a drag racing group on facebook. I was overwhelmed by the amount of people that responded with great comments.

Is the "upside down lettering" similar to Harry Potter and "he who must not be named" thing? Lol..anyway the Miller Killer lettering wasn't on long...I remember it well...I loved growing up on the track.

I am loving all the interest around the wagon and to hear the old stories are amazing. I tried to upload some pictures of the wagon the way it is now but I am getting the message that they are too large. I do have an album of a couple pictures if anyone is interested in seeing it currently.

No.. No big blocks in 69 Chevelle wagons...350/255 or 350/250 most of the time, with Powerglide

Leaving out a few .Ray LITTY sold it to a young guy in So. Windsor, Ct., who sold it to Vogel who then sold it to Frank The Wagon Master Tantillo (1989 Summernat's N/SA class winner) Frank sold it to Stinson , who then passed it on to Bob Bender.

Okay.... W.A. had a bit of a rivalry going with Tex Miller . When he ran the 4 bbl, he was in the same class as Tex's Torino (L/SA )
Lee managed to outrun Tex in a heads up run somewhere (can't remember where)
As you can imagine, Tex didn't take it too well.

Next event, Lee shows up with "MILLER KILLER" in upside down lettering on the sides of his car. He later blocked it out ..Maybe Marc remembers why.

know BTW i remember Lee was going to build a 70 402 chevelle wagon

Well I remember Tex put his mustang up and over backwards years ago so that would explain the upside down lettering, and Miller Killer because he outran him...now what's this about at the scales Bob???

The upside down lettering had nothing to do with him putting his mustang over backwards....it had to do with Tex being upset about the results of their race against each other... My dad told me Tex punched him...therefore in response...The Miller Killer...and upside down so everyone would talk about it.... And apparently it worked because 30 years later it's still being talked about.... My dad I'm sure would get a kick outta this ...

I'm pretty sure the pic is from 1980. I didn't remember the scuffle. But I know Tex (Miller) never liked to lose. Your dad was a fine competitor. We actually became friends in Epping when My partner Tex (Cook not Miller) had to run Mike Magistro in the quater final of the points meet. We were just one round behind your dad for the division. And we built Mikes motor and were instrumental in the car. Your dad thought the race was a given for us. Well Mike beat Tex (my partner) in a close race. Your dad came over and shook our hand after that one.
Those were great times.

So nice to hear Art! I appreciate those stories. He became a bass fisher after leaving racing and became Angler of the year in 90-91...I preferred going racing but needless to say he made that boat motor go fast 😊
