Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Billy, I agree us old F***ts could manage one of these cars and still have a good time driving. Often think about one of my most successful cars which was a 69 chevelle wagon which was a week end winner locally. Easy driving. LOW maintanence.but Heavy to haul around. Have a great Christmas Billy. I was offered a 76 Caprice 2 dr with 4000, original miles. Any good options for this one?

Wow Jack, maybe you should lay off the egg nog.....................I NEVER mentioned anything about Billy or anyone else having a "bad" combo. Your words, not mine. I applaud Vic and Billy for having the balls to build a car on the cheap. When they win the final on Sunday, they get the same purse and trophy that the factory car would receive. |

No 4bbl 305 's in 76. You want the 400 @270 hp , 800 Qjet, 10.2 to one N, O , and P/SA 4085 in N..That's heavy enough! |

Charlie - It was a question - not a statement . Billy - That 'aw shucks' stuff might work well back in the woods but here in the city we look at past performances and yours are based on good solid choices of combinations and hard work . |

Without the 'bogus' combos, some of us would never attempt to build a car because it would seem impossible to compete.
|
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Ya know, I really have to ask, how is this combo bogus? It's got an intake port that wants me to try and find someone that can make it smaller and an exhaust port that's not all that good. It's got a big camshaft and big valves but such low compression that you can't really put a "big" cam in it. All but the 74 can only use the small Motorcraft 4350 carb(700 cfm?). It's got a short stroke(relative to the size) and the rotating mass is probably the heaviest of any big block. I can think of a couple of 455 Buicks and Pontiacs that look better on paper. Not to mention that they come in cars that look like the box that my Grand Prix came in and IT'S a box! It must be because they're such a well kept secret that FFFord guys don't even know about them(or choose to not know).

Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Being a "big guy" and having only raced a Impala one thing I do appreciate running a big car is the leg room up front I had with the bench seat too, made sitting in staging lanes more comfortable!

^^ agree From previous experience with my mid 70's 460s, these are my observations: The exhaust ports in stock form on those D3 heads are horrible. If you are lucky and find some D3 heads without the A.I.R. injection holes, then grab them. Those bumps in the runner really hurt exhaust flow. The intake ports in my opinion are way too big. Port velocity is lowered because they are so big. That 320 factored hp seems a bit high to me. ( considering the valve lift specs and poor exhaust) Good luck on the LTD build. |

Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Why? Because it's not a sbc camaro!
I love the odd balls, barges are cool! Stationwagons were what your dad drove (before minivans) and were un-cool until they got popular on the strip. Heck, a caddy or lincoln for a racecar? Who'd a thunk it? Friend had a new 76 grand marquis/460 when I was a kid and took me for a drive. Stopped and torqued it up then floored it. Shoved me back in the seat and held me there until he let off at 120mph. I fell in love with it right then, I was 12 or so. Looking back it probably took a mile or two, but it was awesome at the time. I'd love to see a lot more of these built, not just 70's merc's, but like a 76 imperial with a 440 or whatever. Another car I love the look of is a 76 caprice 2 door. Good luck on the build and yes all ford exh ports suck, just some worse than others. |

Would the 74 460 @300 hp same cam, a little bigger valves, more compression be a better combo?
|
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
We parted out a '78 Grand Marquis back in the early 90s, I told dad to hang on to the motor until we could determine if it was worth anything, found out it was a junk combo for GT classes, so we threw it all away. Heard the heads were "unworkable" and shortblock assy was way too heavy. Even the local marina saw no boat anchor value in them. Please tell me they're still not worth anything.
|
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
The 78 is rated @ 320 & has a full point less compression. I would favor the 74. Again, Vic is probably the only one actually building one of these boats. I think what started this thread was the recent HP adjustments from NHRA, They dropped 10 off the 77/78 in stock AND the GT version of the motor. Somebody is running one in SS/GT. ?????
Ford 460 197-202 330 320 77-78 SS/GT This thread changed my mind about having my tired 74 hauled off. |

In the mid 80's II had a 77 LTD (Brogham??) some type of luxury option?...an uncle gave it to me...... It was more like a Continental.... Hidden headlights, Power Everything, Landau Top, it was Silver.... It had a 460 4bbl - the damn thing was fast & a gas eater. 460 was a great motor - smooth etc. within 2 years though.... the headlight doors stopped working, the bumpers literally rusted and fell off, and best of all - the sunroof (which I never even used) would leak... rain water would pool in the roof..... so when you hit the brakes the driver and passenger would get a good soaking (no BS)... it was hysterical. So I'm not sure it wouldve made a good demo-derby car because of how rusty it got! I completely forgot I ever owned it till I saw this post... |
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Guys, I have a line on a 74-5 Lincoln with the 460 four-barrel, it is running and has 1500 miles on a rebuilt engine, trans, and rear end. Would this be a good one for Stock? It looks brand new (Continental). Lee

Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Thanks Alan. Was beginning to think it wasn't possible to find one.
Lee, does it have a spreadbore carb ? Either a Thermoquad or a Motorcraft ? |
Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Lee, I can't even find a Lincoln in the Guide.
