Some more info from Jim Henderson and his 65 Chevelle Stocker. Jim said the car had one of the "Stahl-Bars" traction bars on it when he got it. Jr Stock fans will remember this well. Jim said it had to be removed as it was deemed to be "ballast". Jim says the car has connections to SRD and was a Modified Production car for a while. And more history about Jim - he is an ex-NHRA Tech Official. I first heard of "Pittsburgh Jim" though the late Lee Sherman who was one of the great people that helped me when I started in Stock in the early 70s. Jim recalled tossing Lee for the camshaft in his R/SA 66 Chevy at the 74 Summernationals. Jim said Lee was good with that, and he respected Jim for making the tough but right call.

Here is Jim and son Scott. BTW, this Chevelle has such a rich "I've been a race car forever" patina that makes you stop dead in your tracks to check it out and just smile. And if you want to smile too , check out Robz's video of this car at the Class Nationals.

Stock Semi-Finalists waiting to run. Yago, Mike D, and Merkle. It was my lucky day (again) and I got the bye to the final.

I'm pretty sure Joe DeLorenzo and Richie DeCola installed that Stahl bar when they got that car in the 80's If not Joe D would have approved! He ran them on his 57 Chevy, back in the 60's. I used my own version of them back in the 70's too.

Does anyone have photos of the "Stahl" bars? I have dug pretty deep in the internet without any luck. Thanks, Don Jackson

Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II

On Friday I spent some time bench racing with fellow Jersey-ite Dave Ley. As we were reminiscing about great D1 racers Dave pointed to the number on my wristband. The serial number was 11426. I thought the 426 part was cool and left it at that. But after the racing ended I gave the number "11" a second thought. My wife Marge is much more of a believer in "signs" and thinks it was part of my "luck package"

Our Grand Marshal was announced fittingly during the Comp Cams Dave Layer Memorial Quick 32 winner's circle celebration, in front of a large gathering of friends and family. It's more than just drag racing.

Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II

The weather was perfect...the racing was outstanding...the cars were gorgeous...we just needed a few more! Thanks to everyone for putting up with a novice at Class announcing this past weekend. I enjoyed all of the racing, and the Dave Layer Memorial Quick 32 CIC race is truly one of the coolest races I've ever announced! Congrats to you, Mike, and all of the other winners and money collectors over the weekend! Thanks of course to the Beards and the Waltons for trusting me with this race, and to the National Trails and the All Star crews that helped make the race great! A few

observations:
1. The turbo 4 Fords are going to rule the world at Indy.
2. I've gotten spoiled announcing 1/8 mile bracket racing. The was often an awkward (to me) pause as I waited for everyone to reach the 1/4 mile finish line.
3. The best looking car there, bar none, was Ray Barnhart's 60 Chevy NSS car. I'm a Mopar guy and I wanted that Chevy bad.

4. The stray dog that was running around the pits Thursday through Saturday was lured in with food (he was VERY skittish) and caught. They took him to a vet and found out he was chipped, and belonged to someone from Albuquerque NM!

Jeff Day and his father Harley run Precision Machine Racing Engines and were the sponsor of the NSS eliminator. Both Jeff and Harley have run NSS successfully for years. Jeff was racing his beautifully detailed 64 Plymouth Max Wedge in AA/SA.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...psulhxslwu.jpg

Brett Saurbaugh - Brother of Best Engineered Stocker Craig Saurbaugh - normally runs his 67 Vette powered by a 427 in Pure Stock. For this race Brett peeled the "P" off the window and ran A/S. While he was a little outmatched in class he drove his way to several round wins in the eliminator. Look for this burgundy Vette in Robz's video. You Stick Lovers will be smiling and replaying

Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II

Those that have raced the “New Cars” that run 150 MPH+ have experienced what it feels like to have one fly by at the stripe. For those that have not – check this out. My car runs 127 MPH – one of the higher speeds for an “Old Car” – and it feels like I’m standing still when they go by.

This is my Helmet-Cam video from the Quarter Final round of the Autometer Northern Class Nationals against Kevin Skinner in his FS/A 2014 Cobra Jet. Kevin actually red-lighted on this run – but I was so focused on shift points – and then on the finish line -- that I never looked at the scoreboard. I dumped when I realized Kevin was going to take the stripe and killed about .01-.02. Kevin ran 154 MPH on this run.

Imagine what this feels like in your middle class Stocker that is running 112-115 MPH?

Myron,, I agree this event should've been better attended. There were less spectators than last year and the car count was definitely down. I know Michael did his best when the decision was made to move to date, but I can't help but think that the reschedule was a factor this year, especially being the same weekend as Brainerd. I'll keep my fingers crossed that Loose Rocker can do this again, but I'll understand if it doesn't happen. I know Michael will let us know what he can, when he can, after they reflect on how this one went down. I couldn't make it there this year but I still thank those guys for doing what they do,, its much appreciated by many of us out here.

Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II

The prize money and awards for the Autometer Northern Class Nationals are better than any other NHRA or IHRA event. My quick math figues the ANCN win is 5 times more than the points meets I won, and at least double what a NHRA National event would get me with my weak line up of contingency.

And look at all the other stuff that was distributed to so many other racers!

Thanks Michael, Anthony, all those great companies that so richly supported the 2015 Autometer Northern Class Nationals.

Mike, sent your 'care package' to you today.

All of the contingency claims have been submitted to sponsors. Not previously noted, we had three Lucas Oil Class Eliminations winners who had both ATI trans *and* converter to pick up the $50 contingency: Bob Marshall, Steve Novosel, and Jim Boburka (who likes his paid in steak dinners) :p

I was late on getting the Class Eliminations "Class Winner" decals. I have them in-hand and have been handing them out at Bowling Green and Magnolia, and will have them this weekend at Quaker City (Tri-State S/SS Combo Sat & Sun), and at next weekend's NHRA SportsNats at Columbus. Anyone I've missed after that, I'll drop 'em in the mail.

A limited number of 2015 Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals event t-shirts are still available. Look for them this weekend at the Tri-State S/SS race at Quaker City, and then next week at the NHRA Sportsnationals at Columbus. $15/ea, available in blue, red, and grey.

What the heck, I'll go for a grey XL myself. I guess you could PM the details on how to pay.
