Re: Big Chief DQ
This is his first entry at an NHRA Pro-Mod race. He has much to learn. He knew this going in.
How many win their first Pro race these days? NONE! |
Re: Big Chief DQ
The Haters continue to Hate !
There is another first time NHRA Pro Mod racer there that does not have a TV show or all the attention, Mike Bowman . He also is a long time street racer that came up through the ranks and is sitting at #3 qualifyer. You can bet your bottom dollar Mike did not know if he could compete but did work on his stuff to be fast enough to think it was possible . I hear nobody talking all the smack about him and his dream of being there. I don't get why there is so much BS about Chief other than pure jealousy. How is Chief being there hurting this sport ? |
Re: Big Chief DQ
I agree with you Bob!
Also many of current older Drag Racer cut their teeth on the Street back in the 1960's. |
Re: Big Chief DQ
His pit area was indeed packed yesterday and today, I was by there several times. He was out with his fans literally every time I drove by. Big Chief also appeared to have a very modest rig and hauler, like a lot of us 'regular' racers. I don't see how him showing up and trying is a 'joke'....I say good for him!

Re: Big Chief DQ
Think about this Big Cheif could be at yellow bullet. Instead. You think John force racing or any other team would bypass a race you are the Big Dog to go to Indy ?to not qualify ?and you can sell anything. Please check out the yellow bullet manufacturers support. Nhra is missing the boat there midway is like it should be

I saw on FB they did a little video of set-up day and said they paid the 'Marketing fee" that NHRA charges them to set up. They literally had a utility trailer probably 6x18 with the midwest street cars logo on it. They were joking how Force & DSR had 52 foot trailers and this is what they have. In the long run though they probably sold more T-shirts then all those trailers combined. And for all those hating on him....really? I guess you were all perfect angels growing up and never did anything wrong that someone might bring back up 10 years down the road when you race. He said in an interview "It's my truck, my trailer, my car, my motor, I build it, I tune it, I drive it"....boy sounds like the old days of Nitro classes when they were fun and before everyone bought a ride and flew into the track and filled the fuel tank and sat in the lounge. We should all embrace this because as they said on Friday Night that Pro Mods had one of the biggest crowds in history on Friday Night watching them and they stayed for PSB & PS. Normally people who would just be showing up to watch John Force or Antron Brown now realize that "Hey, there is more to racing then just TF & FC" because that's what fans think it is anymore and what is advertised to them. We should all embrace this rather then fight against others, we can't change it but, look at positive ways to make it better. If we keep putting everyone and everything down, in 15 years we'll all be saying boy it sucks we don't have a place to race anymore. What I saw at Cecil County yesterday for the YB Nationals everyone should take a note pad and pen. The place was PACKED WITH PEOPLE and I've been going to CC for 30 years and parked in fields I never knew existed in that place and it cost me $25.00.....not $60+ for one day and there was well over 8,000 people there at a small down home track (Honestly thats why so many people are standing on the line....cause there is NO OTHER PLACE to stand or sit). It really felt like back in the 1980's when you went to a NE and the place was packed and people were having a great time and BBQing and drinking beer. Now 1/8 mile racing is really not for me but, I went as a racing fan and I saw a great show put on by Jim and his crew. Rob Keister |
Re: Big Chief DQ
Several years back, we had one of our SW Drags events at Speedworld.
We had a nice deal.. 200 race cars, including 20 or so S/SS-ers and about 1000 spectators. That evening, the track had booked in the Pinks TV show event. As some of our people were leaving, others started pouring in for the big "show". They filled all the grandstands and were 4 deep at the fences in lawn chairs. I would have killed to get that kind of "gate". A friend asked me.."Where did all these people come from? " Why don't they come out like this for our deal? I just told him..National TV exposure, my friend. I never knew too much about this guys until it came up here a few months back, but trust me, as a part time promoter, I get it. |

Re: Big Chief DQ
Does Big Chief have a stock, or super stock car ?, last I checked this forum is titled Stock and Super Stock.
|
Re: Big Chief DQ
Thursday and Friday there was a line in front of the Midwest Street Cars trailer, a small trailer. Shawn Ellington ( Murder Nova ) was selling shirts, talking to fans, and taking pictures with them. I stopped in when he came out for pictures and listened to him talk to the people, nice guy, seems to get and appreciate the thing they got going. There were more people at their trailer than all the other trailers combined that I saw.
Does any of this relate to Stock/Super Stock? Maybe. If you look at two shows, PINKS and Street Outlaws and how they became popular its obviously TV exposure. Now I would never, although I know very few of you, expect anyone on this site to be involved in the fake drama **** on those shows. But there could be a way to start exposing S/SS on TV like the show after the national event two weeks ago. Maybe some of the racers here that know promotion could create an idea to sell to Pullin or the Discovery Channel guys. That said it would still have to be aimed at a younger crowd |
Re: Big Chief DQ
I was on the PINKS show and I run stock now . Those shows really got people watching drag racing ! The fan base was unreal ! It really showed the normal guy which people can relate too. I think it's cool what BIg Chiief is doing hope he's having fun that's what it's all about !!!

Re: Big Chief DQ
Who better to have a racing reality show than the Bartons and Charlie Westcott Jr.
|
Re: Big Chief DQ
I would think a guy trying to run ProMod with a real Pontiac engine, very limited in cylinder head compared to all the others, would actually have something in common with Stock and SS racers.

Do you always post such rancid ideas? |
Re: Big Chief DQ
Yes. I do. Thank you. Rancid is one of my favorite nouns. Your reply doesn't even rate a "nice try." What does 15 guys who were closer in qualifying have to do with someone who knew before they spent their money they wouldn't be competing. And for you other jousters hoping your toothpick supported replies related, they didn't. When you have TV on your side you can sell anything.
Doesn't mean you can win a race. How many T-shirt buying street race supporters are going to spend a dime with NHRA. Sure. It probably happened this weekend. Some kid talked his dad into buying him a COPO for Christmas. |
Re: Big Chief DQ
Bruce - Sometimes you play because its fun. Ever been to Bonneville?
|
Re: Big Chief DQ
Aw, Dwight. C'mon. There's no denying the underlying effort. To win or in the case of Bonneville set a record. In the mean time we hope to have fun so we're not a bunch of uber serious nuts tearing our hair out when we don't win. I knew Moulty. One of the original workers at Bonneville that every old timer knows. He lived in my town. Used to sit and eat Pizza and drink cokes with him and listen to his stories. That was fun.
Have I wanted to go to Bonneville? Sure. I would take a car that I thought I'd have a chance to break a record if I did. I wouldn't take a stock Chevette in hopes of getting in the 200 mph club. But hey, maybe I could sell a lot of my T-shirts.......... |
Re: Big Chief DQ
Bruce, you are way wrong. Let me ask you, of Dan Fletcher's 98 National event wins.....how many times was he fastest in his class? Very few. If you don't race because you aren't fastest........I call you a wanna be.
|
Re: Big Chief DQ
The topic. You might want to stay on topic. Oh how fun it was for you to take a second to type, "You're wrong." Felt good? Now then shotgun, tell the boys and girls the difference between a bracket race and a HEADS-UP CATEGORY
Give it up provocateurs. |

How is the Matador Station Wagon doing these days? Maybe you should run it in Pro Mod before you "hammer on" everyone else. Oh....sorry, your Matador would be about 11 seconds too slow. |
Re: Big Chief DQ
Bruce, please see who started this thread. Then, please see who high jacked it... you did.
Good for The Big Chief. He does it all himself. PS... I really like Shaun and his Murder Nova....seems to leave straight and in control. Hope they race again. |

Congratulations Gary:
You managed to take a topical opinion and in your best limp attempt, try to blow me over the moon. You see Gary, those fake attacks mean nothing to me, or my business. Luckily for me, reality presents itself to me everyday in the phone calls for Pontiac help I get, the friends I have at the track, the jobs I have continued to get since 1994. Yeah, you've just made a fool of yourself. Now then, you want to get back on topic, or hope the little minds are giggling along with you? Ever google yourself? hahaha.... |

Go ahead and Google me......contrary to you, I don't have a laundry list of complaints against me. You will find that I am a grandfather of 10 wonderful children with the oldest in the Navy. I am a drafted, disabled, combat veteran, I managed and retired from a Fortune 500 company after nearly 40 years, and I have NEVER been arrested. But, I have had tickets 50 some years ago for reckless driving....their were no drag racing laws then. Having the fastest car in town was a big deal then. So Bruce, take your hate and move on. |

Love him or hate him, he brings interest to our sport. His NHRA message to race the track, not the street, is positive. I think most S/SS people can appreciate his race effort. While he missed the cut this week (#31 469 Justin Shearer, Mustang OK, n'68 Firebird 6.361 226.47), most would be happy with his "A to B" consistency, in his last three Q shots. Its also shows just how tough the competition is in an NHRA Eliminator. Hope he comes back with more steam. Mike A114 P/SA |
Re: Big Chief DQ
Mike & Jerry are 100% correct and that's whats wrong with the future of the sport. We're so quick at jumping on the quickest chat board or FB site to beat up someone else for attempting to try something that has never been attempted before or bring up stuff they did 20 years ago and it has no meaning to the point at hand. Then we sit here and go "Boy the future of the sport is in trouble"....well, yeah cause everybody who wanted to come into the sport and race has been alienated by someone on a chatboard that they will probably never meet. I mean you go on other chat boards and because someone doesn't want to run them on a Friday night at the local track they want to do sickening stuff to their family....come on guys!!! It's ashame that the world has become the way it has with so much negativity and not enough positive points and we want to trash someone for trying something that might not qualify but, heck he gave it the good old "college try". Yes, we live in a different time now where racing events have kinda turned into a "Party scene" and nobody really works on their cars anymore but, for me the three or four days away from reality of the real world & a stressful job with no TV or news is a blessing and it's like turning off a switch and enjoying friends company.
Now back to your regularly scheduled program Rob K. |
Re: Big Chief DQ
Good post Rob and I agree. I am no big fan of Street Outlaws or Big Chief but lots of people are and it does add interest. If it helps our sport it's good....
|
Re: Big Chief DQ
Huge crowds around his car all weekend.Even when he was not out working on it.Murder Nova guy was signing autographs at the t shirt booth on the other side of the track.More people there than at any pros trailer.Alot of the Big Cs shirts were sold out.A few cars down from the Big C was Billy Glidden with Bob and Etta helping.Few even noticed.

Re: Big Chief DQ
"Big Chief" and his car have absolutely NOTHING to do with drag racing or NHRA. He has huge crowds around the car for the same reason Caitlin Jenner has huge crowds around him/her, Idiot Americans LOVE celebrity, whether it's actually earned or not. You could put ****ing Honey Boo-Boo in a ProMod car at Indy, and she'd outdraw every other racer there. And 70 percent of the "fans" around her and her car wouldn't even be able to tell you what ProMod is.
