bob[/QUOT What's not to like? How about that rod killing 5 pound piston.... |
Re: the best 1960 stock elim. car
hey hey hey, Bruce... that's not very nice.
It's only 2 pounds... and is there to test the durability of connecting rods. |
Re: the best 1960 stock elim. car
Don Fezell's Jenkins/Strickler Old Reliable Z-11 brought $525K at Mecum's, his black Z-11 brought $340K.
The 409 based cars are great. The pistons are no heavier than some of the Chrysler Hemi pistons. |

Re: the best 1960 stock elim. car
Years ago, I built a rather stock 409, and the piston with the pin,no rings, weighed 1002 grams. That rotating assembly probably acted like a huge auxiliary flywheel in addition to the regular flywheel. It sure left like a cannon ball.

Re: the best 1960 stock elim. car
Hey ya'll, I realize this is an old thread.
But I just now ran across it, by accident. Since I'm a Pontiac guy, I'll name a few '60's Stock Pontiacs I liked. (1) There were some 389 Tri-Power '60 & '61 models that did good. Gary Moore was '68 div 4 Stock champ & set the F/S record at the '69 Winter Nats, in a '61 model. (2) Somebody already mentioned the '62 421SD powered Pontiacs. I really liked those, too. Don Gay drove an A/S class winner. There were quite a few strong ones. (3) There were the 421SD powered A/FX Tempests & B/FX Cat class winners, in '62 & '63. I think the FX classes were included in the Top Stock category. (4) The Knafel Pontiac Tri-power '66 GTO won lots of races in '66. The Royal Pontiac '66 also ran strong. (5) The "Limelighter" '67 GTO was a nat record holder. (6) There have been too many strong running '68 Birds to list here. I'll just name 1. Truman Fields bought it new. It won Indy twice, along with lots of other wins. Probably the most famous '68 Bird drag car. (7) Then there were the '69 Goats, especially RAIV powered Judge models. Some were nat record holders. Lots of Pontiac dealers sponsored 'em, in '69. We'll hey, those here who are familiar with my posts know I could go on & on naming Pontiacs & posting pics. But I'll be nice on this one post. :D |

I have to agree with Steve, but have to add Jere Stahl's 1966 Hemi 4 speed car. Hemi with a 4 speed and 7 inch slicks - Ya Hoo! Super Stock Magazine said the 1969 Plymouth Road Runner with the 440 6 Pak (A-12) was a "Good Stocker" and proved it by building one!:) Have a Great Day to all. Respectfully, Henry Kunz 1534 H/SA |

Re: the best 1960 stock elim. car
I was messing around looking at different cars the other day and found one that looked kinda interesting.
1962 Chevy Biscayne wagon 327 300hp(factory rating) 360 ft lbs 1/4 mile time listed 16.4 calculated by simulation@automobilecatalog.com shipping weight 3940 lbs I haven't looked to see if it is even listed for s/ss yet |
Re: the best 1960 stock elim. car
Before the whole COPO deal, I had a plan to build and race each GTO from 1964-1971. Maybe I will get back to that plan one day.....

Here you go ! Threw in a '72, since I get 9 pic slots. Between these Goats there were quite a few class & event wins, as well as nat records. Also, the '71 got 3 RU's in a row @ Indy, & held a nat record 5 years running. And, as most here know, I could list quite a few more. :D Hey, hope you get to build & race one from each year. If you contact Todd Kuhn, he might let you make a few passes in his '70 455, to see how you like it. Might inspire you to start building your own. :) Also, I've read that there are plans to run the old Axemaker & Reuland '72 model, on a limited basis. You might be able to contact those connected with that car & get to drive it some, so you could be racing while you're building one of your own. Hey, the old Ray Hunt '72 is for sale. Would be cool to put it back on the track. Done right, it might also be worth some money, when you're through racing it. The D-port 455 engine makes a good combo in a '72. Todd Hoven won a nat event & class @ Indy with this combo, back in around 2008, IIRC. But, a quick scan of the '64-'71 GTO combos seems to show that a '68 or '69, with a #16 head 400 engine, would be the most competitive combo, without using high dollar round port heads. The NHRA hp factor is only 325hp. That's less than the same engine in a '68 Bird. IIRC, a few years back, Adam Strang set the F/S record in a '68. Tim Gillespie also ran a nice '68, which ran low 11's & qualified @ Indy. http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...5&MAKE=Pontiac http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...4&MAKE=Pontiac I'd like to see all the Pontiacs possible out on the tracks ! :) |

I'm a GM guy but my memory is starting to fade some, wasn't there a ( I think) 64 or 65 GTO 389 4 speed car that had a functional style hood scoop from the factory. If someone could jump in and clarify that, I some how vaguely remember a Pontiac with that style hood and it was a steel hood , not a fiberglass replacement? Was there such an animal? I thought that was a nice looking car and there was a Light metallic blue hardtop example that used to race a N.Y. National speedway when I was a young lad. Have Good Day to all. Re: the best 1960 stock elim. car
There are so many very cool hi-po cars from that era it is hard to choose.
I guess the car that hits a very high spot on my list is the Project Six Pack from S.S. & D.I. They built the car and raced the car. Also learned a little about lace paint work, I believe. If I could build my dream car it would be from Chevy. My 1st car was a 1964 Biscayne 2 dr. My version now would be 409 with a 4 speed, original was 6 and powerglide. Clone or not it would be fun. Don't know that it will happen, but never say never. |
