I love posts like this, you guys don’t think some bean counter from NHRA isn’t reading some of this stuff and thinking, hmm see these guys will be just fine when we cut them out of NHRA completely, all the money spent for a class car, following a rule book and here we are saying “hell I’ll just race my local stuff and save my money and have fun”. How about do that now and quit bitching about how much NHRA sucks and quit giving them ideas to get rid of us and us agreeing that it’s cool we would still carry on. I built and spent money in class racing because that’s what I like and want, not to just run local for the rest of my life.

Just checking to see if anything has changed..
BTW, with guys going to 8 or 9 points meets now, I don't feel like NHRA is being dissed or strong armed by anybody right now.

Re: Would You Quit?

I've wondered about that myself. The question would be is anyone going to pick up the reins and be a true class racing organization. Nobody is right now except NHRA . Their all "kind of's". All these other organizations and attempts are relying on NHRA to do the heavy lifting . Who pays, after NHRA throwing in of the towel, for the "rest of the story". Complete Teardowns, with knowledgeable picky tech men that stop the stretching of the rules... real ones like have slipped away some, but at least not completely vanished from the possibility. I'm not talking about looking at a throttle body and a set of seat belts and walking away. Heads up racing, and some type of engine monitoring to keep things level would be needed. Even a horsepower committee like other organizations continue to do, or AHFS as current.( EXCEPT INDY LOL !!!!) Without the total package, Heads Up racing would fall apart pretty quick. Is anybody going to take all this stuff serious? Or you talking about Bracket racing Class Cars. My opinion don't matter now, but I have wondered the same questions as you Mark.. If your just going to bracket race, why bother with all the rules?

Sadly, I think you are correct. Without NHRA to at least minimally enforce the rules, any local association would just turn into glorified bracket racing for cars that look like Stock & SS cars. Pretty much a variation on the nostalgia SS cars.

IMHO
NHRA will sell off Sportsman racing before they just shut it down.
The bean counters have probably already put a price on us Sportsmen class racers. We are a viable commodity and money is the name of the game.

I’ve been working on my boat that we have not used in 17 years all because of a cheater with a throttle body with no time off.
The tech folks make it mean something to win class.

Keep my car and change over to bracket set up, since I guess it will drop 10K in value. There aren't any S/SS organizations around here, but plenty of bracket racing.

Don't think I could pull the trigger. Things aren't the way I remember them, growing up, and I definitely do my share of complaining, but it's still my favorite thing in the world to do.

Take a hiatus for a few years. Not sure if I would sell my stuff or not. Go back to some of my other hobbies I have put down for years. If it called me back maybe I would listen. Hard to say.

When NHRA noticed the light turnout for the other categories, they should have increased the quota for the stockers at the last minute. D1 and D3 are a haven for competitive stockers.

What would you do?

I'll outline a few choices and then tell us how you would proceed in the future, and briefly, tell us why.

This is not meant to be a poll or a ballot. Let's just include S/SS drivers who have raced in the last two years for Wallys.

* I would race my car at independent S/SS races near me , or possibly help to start one in my area

* I would immediately put my car(s) up for sale

* I would put my car back on the street and take it to cruise nights, etc.

* I would use my car for big money bracket races

* I would race it at the local Summit series and hope to get to go to Pomona and win a Wally that way.

* I would keep my car as a museum piece, or donate it as such.

What else?

Please..Let's keep this narrowly focused.
Thanks

Good morning Mark,
I don't think I could quit. I 've done this most of my life ( silly me ) !
I would probably still race the closest Stk/ SS Association races and if they get the I/8 Mile Deal going here on Long Island would probably bracket race and continue testing. Being German & Irish thickheadedness runs deep!

Re: Would You Quit?

I could be wrong, but I see NHRA as the only thing that keeps the associations as being a viable alternative for S/SS racing. If NHRA killed their program, there would be no more std for the class cars, slowly turning it into a NSS style racing.

I love the ECSSA series, but its based off of real NHRA class racing, and only allows real cars to compete. And 90% of the cars if not more than that are the same cars you race at divisionals in div1. I know everyone claims their association is as good as the real deal, but I hear other say same really are not.

I dont feel NHRA will pull the plug on class racing in any distant future. I've heard for 20 years that it will be gone sooner than later. If it did, I'm not sure what I would do. My guess is it will last longer than I have to worry about it.

Without us, HOW would they pay the Pro’s? Sponsor money is at an all time low. It’s not like we’ve had a race purse raise or enhancement in what, ten years or more?
I’d grab all my race buddies and go hunting and fishing! SIMPLE for me.

Fear not CLASS RACERS, they are not dropping us anytime soon. SOMEONE has to pay the bills and that would be us. Where else could they muster up enough racers to shell out hundreds of $$ for entry fees, .....AND run for peanuts ????? The high dollar ( ) racers are WAY too smart for that.....

I don't think sportsman entries have anything to do with the purses. I believe they are paid by Camping World just as the sportsman purses are paid by Lucas. I think that the sportsman entries are used to pay for the race itself, payroll, etc. That's the main reason NHRA needs us at national events.

Re: Would You Quit?

If it all comes to an end, I would either run the local S/SS races and big dollar S/SS races. I would even go to the local brackets, it is racing and racing is fun.

or

just rent out the wagon as a condo for illegals and get subsidies from the govt.

Jared,

You did not only grew up in the sport, but like many, you are following and representing a family legacy that goes back decades.
