The pros have been doing this for quite a few years here in Florida. It all started at PBIR. When that track closed it moved to Orlando. This year it is at Bradenton and includes Stock and Super Stock with an invitation only field. Hopefully it will be a huge success and will be something that will continue. I doubt NHRA cares about this race.
Good luck to the select group that was invited.

On the contrary, I believe NHRA will be monitoring this race closely….

100% agree.
It's also interesting to see NHRA is having a test session for Nitro, PS, PSM, FSS, and FX at Gainesville Feb 8-11. The powers that be at NHRA have to already know the Nitro and PS teams that typically test will already be 3 hours South in Bradenton.

Of course there will then be 2 more test sessions at Gainesville.

Feb 15-17 for Nitro and 18-19 for the other categories.

Then again March 5-6 but only for those entered for the Gators.

Another interesting fact: NHRA has notified the nitro teams they need to bring their own Nitro to the first 2 test sessions. Obviously barely any Nitro teams will be going to the first test session. But I would not want to be driving down the highway with 2 or 3 barrels of Nitro in the truck for that second test session. Yeeyoza.

I really don't think they care when they know every one of these racers will likely be at the Gatornationals a month later, pocket change or not, if they were "lucky" enough to get in.

It's been a long time since I was in the same room where the NHRA staff were talking, but looking at what's happened (things got worse) since then I think it still applies.

NHRA was very agressive about anything they saw as a challenge. And they definitely know what's being said online.

Not exactly the same thing, but Bob Unkefer (my friend, may he rest in peace) went from being on rotation for national events to a "staff realignment" that didn't include him and finally to very limited use. All after he became aligned with Pro Stock Truck owners.

Edit to add that Jenkins talked about how things changed after he and others attended the first PRO race starting with the next NHRA race they entered.

Very interesting Dan, could NHRA have sent a very subtle message to team Elite at the Vegas national when numerous Elite cars were closely checked for wiring ? After All, Elite is the team behind this BIG $$ race in Florida ..:):)

Re: Clarification Needed - Pro Invitation Race in Florida

This is shaping up as a great race, and it is great that stock and super stock are included. I am disappointed that there will not be any heads up in the race, but all the pluses outweigh that . Maybe next year

It will be on Floracing which I bought a subscription to last year at the urging of a close friend who makes his living building asphalt and dirt stock car engines. It surprised me how good of a job Flo does, I don't watch it much, but I have watched some of the lead up stories to this event and they are great. They just did an interview with Greg Andersen and it is great material. Flo is more expensive than NHRA tv, but I see you can buy a month if you want to try it out for this event.

Seems that some are concerned about who is invited , it is their sandbox and they can invite whoever they want and that is OK with me. Good luck to all

I may have missed it, but is there a list of "invited" competitors? Or do only 'they' know, or is it a big secret? Inquiring minds......

https://superstarshootout.com/lineup/

It only mentions the list for TF, FC, and PS. I'm sure those in TS, SS & Stock who are invited were asked to keep it confidential.

I can't wait to go watch this in person.

On the contrary. If Elite decided it was done with NHRA I believe PS would get even bigger. It would then give the other engine builders their time to shine and allow more competition.

Last year at Indy I was waiting at the credential trailer and up walks EE. I point blank asked her if the Elite engines were really $175k. She said they have about $140k in parts & labor alone in each engine. Then add the transmission and the chassis plus the $15k suspension and you just have to stop counting at some point.

I was excited to watch as I thought this race was going to be an "Allstar Race" for S/SS, from what I heard the racers invited is like a Popularity Invite.

Well I wasn't invited to this event (probably didn't have my correct email address) Congratulations to all that will be participating and know you will be representing all of us. Hopefully the promoters and the race fans will be impressed with what they see,and maybe we will have more opportunities outside the NHRA sanctioned events.
Good luck to all.

I've had that happen a couple times. Yes,we believe shoe polish is a necessity. But I for one am hoping trends aren't getting started that is going to quickly send the sport downhill. Next thing will be Full Time 1/8 mile races at 1/4 mile tracks like the bracket racer's do. And they LOVE it. You gonna love that too?

Not all bracket racers love the half track (1/8 on a 1/4).......some of us still pack a pair.

I support all S/SS associations and how they are run. However you might want to look at Midwest Class Racers for success. We are beginning our 19th season.9 race weekends on the schedule this season. All have 2 separate races, and purses. Car counts as high as 92 last season. Qualifying is used to pair cars for first round. Heads up for cars in the same class and they are weighed. Purse is always 2k to win and 5K at some events. Payout goes all the way to first round winner,100 dollars. looking at the numbers, I think MCR may be the largest and most successful S/SS association and we use NHRA rules.

All I can find is Top Fuel , Funny Car and Pro Stock numbers... and some pretty decent numbers too. 339.87mph for Bob Tasca. Haven't even found pictures or any info on Stock or SS... not that i'm within 4000 miles but also can't find anything about spectator tickets, just racer entry ($1000 for S/SS) and sponsor credentials.

Both. 30k to winner. No other spot pays.

It’d be awesome to see No Splits and the little check match the big check! Keep the payout just like the flyer advertised.

No charge to park rigs, and 4 crew passes were included in the entry fee. They had trackside motorhome parking at 1k a pop... sold out. There was on site not trackside mh parking also, I don't remember the price but it wasn't cheap. Overall a pretty damn good experience. There was a few small bumps in the road but for their first go they get a thumbs up from me. There are some rumors floating around about more of these events. Good to see! Wes Buck spoke at the sportsman chip draw and said we don't want to take anything away from or be another NHRA. There is plenty to go around and to say this event was successful is an understatement.

Thanks for the clarification Kenny. Sounds like it will be successful!

They ran Stock, Super Stock and Top Sportsman finals after the pro finals. They had more than enough opportunities to have the sportsman finals set up before the pros.

Great weather, great racing, a real good show, two real good bands, capacity crowd.

Re: Clarification Needed - Pro Invitation Race in Florida

I'm happy to see it went pretty well for an inaugural event and overjoyed at the purse.

But I'm still confused about sportsman entries. I saw quite a few names on the Stock and SS list that I don't remember seeing before and I follow each race pretty closely.

Maybe I missed it, but was the criteria for entry ever explained? I saw lots of top level racers, but there were a bunch I didn't see, including those from the general area. Was it just a question of paying the bucks and showing up?

Ron Ortiz 02-11-2024 05:43 PM

Re: Clarification Needed - Pro Invitation Race in Florida

Spoke to a T/S racer who said there were quite a few east coasters who weren't interested as they usually run the 1/8th mile and this was 1/4 mile, plus the entry fee was up there, but it was a 50K payout.
There were good racers invited, a lot of hitters, but it was a matter of who you know, which is cool, if you know. If you put together a top 30 in each category, it would be awesome, and it would include a whole lot of racers who aren't racing presently but would still be able to drive better than most.
