In regards to GTX John's comment about paying $100.00 to see His Royal
Rudeness say things to Jared's face, I will kick in $100.00 as well. But more importantly, I will pay $200.00 to see him be rude to Jared in front of Julies face. Re: New - Lots of Questions. Help me understand S&SS
So the prevailing opinion here seems to be just as I felt when I looked at the outline for a ‘67 383.... carb too small to make real power. Somewhat reassuring.
What about a 71 400 combo? You get around 415 available cubes, 452 heads, and maybe most importantly, a big 850 Thermoquad. Not sure how this carburetor is viewed as a race option, but at least its big enough to not be the cork in the combo. The downside would appear to be compression; Down around 9:1. Does an engine with that little squeeze respond to modifications very well? Also, I was watching one of Bobby Fazios videos. He was talking with a guy that said he was running The Low Deck 440 combo. I went back and listened to it 3 times to make sure I heard him correctly. Anybody have any idea what he was talking about?? |
Re: New - Lots of Questions. Help me understand S&SS
I think the 383 or 440 in regular Superstock.
SS/IA or SS/JA for 440 and SS/KA or SS/LA with the 383 would be viable to run under the index even if not a world beater. |

West Coast = Best Coast. Looking forward to a great start to the year in Phoenix this week!

Re: New - Lots of Questions. Help me understand S&SS
The 400 isn’t terrible. The knock on some of the later engines is how far down the hole the piston is. The prevailing opinion is that might be, at minimum, difficult to overcome. I think the 71 would be the best of them, as it only got worse from there. The Thermoquad is a great carb. GTX John likely agrees with me.

Re: New - Lots of Questions. Help me understand S&SS
I believe Greg Gay runs the 400-4 barrel in his Mirada out here on the east coast. It is not a bad combo. I looked at it as an alternative to the boat anchor I am putting in my 66 Dodge. I would look at the 73 400/265. It is rated at 20 hp less than the 72 motor. NHRA rates the 72 at 330 hp and the 73 at 310. The Thermoquad is a great carb, and a lot of people forget that it was originally designed by Carter as a race carb. Not sure how heavy your car is, but the 73 motor at 3735 puts you in GT/LA. 11.05 index, and no cage needed.
Another to think about in GT is the 70 Chrysler 440/350. It is allowed the same bigger Carter as the 375 hp motor, but you must claim it as a Chrysler. The Dodge/Plymouth combo uses the baby Holley. That combo puts you in some tough classes though (GT/H-ish) at a decent weight (3500-ish?) As for the 440 low deck, it is probably a 440 combo using a 400 block with the 440 rotating assembly stuffed in it. The downside of this is you will need a short custom piston. Not sure how much money you are wanting to spend, but that option adds up fast. Most all 440 combos are going to put you in a higher GT class. GT/A-K require a cage. GT/L and down do not. |

Im extremely familiar with all 400-block combos. Built and raced more than a few of them. Ran a 3.75 stroke 451 with Stealth heads for a decade. Loved that thing. Current motor is the same crank & pistons, had the crank offset ground to 3.875, utilizing a 6.70 BBC rod to land the piston at zero on a .020 decked 400 block. At .040 over, it makes 468 cubes. I didn?t think a 3.75 stroke 400 block would be legal though. It runs a different piston pin ht than a 440. Or or shorter rod in some cases. Typically an .990 pin. Either way, it’s a lighter rotating assembly than in a 440 block. The block itself is lighter too. If it is legal, why would anyone ever run an RB block?! |

Re: New - Lots of Questions. Help me understand S&SS
Another option , depending on where you live, is running NSS (Nostalgia Super Stock).
Due to the elimination of tracks and events here in Division 4 this is an option that my own car fits into very well. Your car (as described by you) fits in without any modifications other than factory style hood scoop. You can look up rules by sanctioning body in your local area. These groups are getting bigger every year due to retired class cars, lack of National events due to quotas and their payouts are just as good if not better! BUT no NHRA WALLY. TDRA 10 race series in texas NDRL series in Div 3 NSS Inc True Nostalgia Victory NSS and many others Just something to think about, you could even yes it as a real time test on a NHRA SS combo until it is right. |

My car is virtually an NSS car as it sits, and I would LOVE to be a regular in that scene. Unfortunately I live in the Pacific Northwest where there is no NSS group active anywhere near me. Ive even reached out to Victory (IIRC) to see if they would be interested in doing a Western series. They werent dismissive, saying essentially if I wanted to start a series, they would be willing to help. Problem there is I still work a fairly demanding job that takes a good 50-hrs a week and has me traveling 20-ish weeks a year. I also have a wife that enjoys other activities. I barely have time to drag race, just dont have the time to dedicate to another level of this hobby. Not to mention I just really love racing, not sure Im a race promoter. I was real excited that the NHRA Heritage series has a race at Woodburn OR. this year. I could run HotRod Eliminator (basic bracket class) and maybe D-Gas (10.60 index) if I added a mechanical throttle-stop to my car. Then my local Summit-Series points schedule came out?.. local double header that weekend. Long story short: I would LOVE to be racing NSS. Theres just nothing near me. I havent ruled out getting involved and trying to start a series. Anybody here have experience grass-rooting a series to your area like this?? Perhaps I’ll poke around or start a thread aimed in this direction in the NSS section. |
