Re: Original hemi dart information
NK,
I'll post the information, but not the photo's. 1968 Super Stock Magazine Nationals were held at New York National Speedway,,,,,,July 19 thru July 21. The SS/B Class Winner on Friday was Sox & Martin, who defeated Bob Gaudreau's Candy Cuda. The S/S Eliminator on Sunday, was won by Dick Arons, who drove his SS/F 67' SS396/325 HP Camaro 4-speed (convertible), defeating Bill Stiles in his SS/BA 68' Hemi Barracuda. (Actually, Bill Stiles beat Dick Arons in the Final, but ran under the index). The Dick Arons 1967 Camaro was sponsored by Mid West Auto Parts, had Cragar wheels,,,,,,Butternut Yellow paint and black convertible top. mi Moose;283249]I came across this older post...is there anyone else here that can add anymore info or details on the Sox & Martin 68 Hemi Barracuda's that they raced in 68-69-70 or later...Here's a couple of photos of Eddie Smith's (West Virgina Hemi) 68 Hemi Barracuda that Sox & Martin sold to
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...ldoraTruby.jpg http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...ldoraTruby.jpg[/QUOTE]Hemi Moose I was at Cicle cCounty Md. when Sox & martin showed up to run a 2 out of 3 match race with who I can't remember. The car was drven by Carlton, and I think was acid dipped. It was the first Cuda that they had installed a full rollcage into. Talked to Buddy about bent quater pannels just infront of rear wheels up the rear window that had been repaired and in primer.I beleave the car needed the cage to support the dipped body, due to the fact that they did not have any ladder bars or 4 link at the time,. The rear springs would torq up in fromt and pull down at rear hanger, thus bend in rear pannels. That vehicle had only rear springs no bars. Do you think that car could have been Don Carlton's car or just a dipped body to start with. I think it was a car built just to match race. But I'm sure they found out after a few passes that it needed some support body wise. Very soon after that better rear suspension " ladder bars " started showing up on the Chry. racecars, because they could hook into the cage for support. JACK |

Sonny Ray in the "Collins & Jones" SS/AA Baracuda at Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip about 1980. Notice how low in the seat he's sitting. Sonny was a tall man.

Cool. Liteweight and I watched Renald race the black BS car up @ Mission BC @ their May Hemi shootouts . I think it ran a 9.0. Very well built car by Lee Brothers. Didn't know until now it was a Stepp car.

Paul, I stopped at a Kokomo In. speed shop today asking about Tom Crutchfield. One guy in the engine shop used to race with him at Bunker Hill and is from the same area. He said he could find out some info for us. This guy remembered Toms Hemi cars well. Tom. Just a little something to get this thread going again.

Tommy D,
The thread needed a rest,,,,,,,,;) Now, can anyone figure out who's 68' Dart is running A/MP versus Dyno Don,,,,,,,,,at Indy...1969 Nationals Dyno Don ran Jerry Harvey's 1966 Mustang, the former A/FX car in A/MP in 1969. 3 months earlier, Mr. Nicholson won the 69' Springnationals 'Street Eliminator' in this car. Re: Original hemi dart information
Hi!
I'm new to the forum. Regarding post 1136, the red Hemi Dart running against Dyno Don was discussed some time ago in the SS Yahoo Group. #343 at the '69 Nationals was listed as Bill Shrewsberry '68 Hemi Dart entered by Arlen Vanke. A Tom Myl photo of the car was posted in the SS group. Thanks; Ariel |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Welcome to the forum, Ariel,,, theres alot of great info on here,, take it all in if you can.
Thanks for the info on "Wild Bill" Shrewsberry too. I remember hearing where he'd grab a ride from different teams from time to time. Take care. Danny Durham |

I have questions on whether this Dart was crashed - there seems to be little info on it. John Rivers from what I understand was a black guy - also note the Soulful (something) Racing on the rear quarter. Look at this pic which apears to be 70, 71ish at what looks to be a Div V Points Meet. I am judging the year by the cars in the background - Ostrich's SS/DA car ect... Was this car sold - It appears the racer and the boy are not John Rivers - Any help here?

Re: Original hemi dart information
Often overlooked in 1968,,,
Judy Lilly had a successful campaign in Division 5 (West Central Division) with the SS/BA 68' Hemi Barracuda. And Ms. Lilly was the only female to qualify for the 68' NHRA World Finals, October 20, 1968 @ Tulsa, Oklahoma. She won several rounds, before breaking-out (Disqualified), by running under the SS/BA National Record (10.83) in the quarter-finals. http://www.nitroactive.net/images/jl6901_z.jpg |

Re: Original hemi dart information
In regards to John Rivers, He did own the Hemi Dart and that photo is of him and he was was part of a St. Paul car club existing of black racers. The club name was The Soulful Strutters. Another member named Eddie Anderson had a Green 68 hemi Dart as well. John lived in North Mpls and use to keep the car on his ramp truck behind his house in an alley. Never garaged. And what kept anyone from stealing that ride was one bad *** German Shepherd that was was chained to the truck. A long chain I might add. Hope that this helps.

Re: Original hemi dart information
I appreciate the info on the Johnny Rivers Dart. Does anyone know what ever happened to it? I have heard that it is still tucked away in MN, that it was crashed, that it fell on Johnny and killed him, ect... My point with the picture is that this is not a black guy and his son - I was under the impression that Johnny was a black guy???? So was the car sold??
Thanks, Mark J |
