Re: Oddball Muscle Cars
In 1998 A buddy of mine called me that had a used car lot. He knew we were looking for some kind of muscle car for my son Chris. Went to his lot to find a 1974 Malibu Classic 454/275 4/barrel 4 speed. Bench seat, factory tach and 2 SW gauges below dash. 1 owner
54,000 mi. Got it home pulled back seat out and found build sheet. All matching numbers 10 bolt posi and Muncie was a rock crusher (fine spline). What a boat we called it "THE PICKLE" , Dark Met. Green. Took to super Chevy Pomona for his first trip down the track ran 15.70 spinning thru second and went 103 mph. My other son David was running his 67 Chevelle small block and the fun part was grudge racing both my boy's with My 96 Impala. Good times! |
Re: Oddball Muscle Cars
In the early 1990s I bought a 61 Chevy Impala 4 dr sedan 348 3X2s,factory A/C, P/S, P/B,six way power seat. Bought the car from the original owner. Still had the original aircleaner.
Another car belongs to a friend of mine. 60 Belair 4dr sedan 348/250hp factory 4/speed. Hammer |
Re: Oddball Muscle Cars
Saw a documented and restored 1964 Plymouth Belvedere 4 door with a factory 426 Max Wedge and 4 speed, oddly it was ordered without posi. The story is that it was ordered to serve as a tow car for a Dr. who had a large boat. 415hp.

A friend presently has a '70 Torino WAGON, green with woodgrain sides with a 429 auto. I'm not sure if it is CJ or SCJ (I'm not really a Ford guy) but he's got all kinds of original documentation substantiating the car and motor.

The 1968 Plymouth Fury III Fast Top with a 440/375hp/727 would run in the 14's stock. I had one of them back in the '80s.

Re: Oddball Muscle Cars
Some of the Furys were good; others were substantially less than that.
I've raced plenty of oddball stockers in my life but one of the worst was a refrigerator-white 383 2bbl 727 '70 Fury I in (AHRA) O/SA. I was thrilled to get the left front wheel an inch off the ground on the launch but, even on a soft record, the car couldn't get out of its own way. |
Re: Oddball Muscle Cars

Re: Oddball Muscle Cars
I worked at at parts store in 1982 and got a call one day from a service station we sold and delivered parts to. They had customer who was driving 1966 4 Dorr Bel Air from south Louisiana back to somewhere up north. Owner of Texaco called to get rocker arm for Bel Air with a 427 engine and when looking up in TRW book it listed Hi-Perf or std 427 engine. When I asked which one it was the owner of the Texaco told me "hell, I don't know. How do you tell?." I just told him I would have to pick up either at the warehouse and would come by and look to see myself.
When I got to the Texaco there sat a 1966 Bel Air 4 door sedan. Black with black interior, bench seat 427/425HP, 4 speed car that was previously a Louisiana Sheriffs patrol car. All original and new owner was taking car back home to Missouri. Car was amazingly original with factory wheel covers, plain jane interior, original carb and shifter. Owner wouldn't tell me what he gave for car but sure was an unusual vehicle and stiil had spot light on drivers side windshield post. |
