Re: Missing Stock&Super Stock Magazine.
Jim Davis was, along with Monk Reynolds, of Eastern Drag News fame, the co-ounder of Super Stock and DRAG ILLUSTRATED. Here is a very interesting exchange with information about his racing career, aand his having been President of B & M (yeah, that one) for eighteen years.
Here's the link. Nice article with pictures... http://www.motorburg.com/?p=1 Enjoy... I sure did! |

Re: Missing Stock&Super Stock Magazine.
Thanks for that!
And, congratulations to Phil Burgess; wow!!! 26 years!!! Truly amazing... Think of the changes he's seen... from the INSIDE!! Once he retires, he should write a book; I'd buy it!!! |
Re: Missing Stock&Super Stock Magazine.
We all miss SS&DI. When we started Drag Racing Action, it was to just try and bring back the good parts of SS&DI. Sometimes we succeed and sometimes... well, I think you know how it is. In any event, as long as the sportsman racers, of which I include every single one of us out there regardless of the class we race in, continue to support and subscribe to DRA, along with support the many advertisers we have, I can tell you there is no reason to discontinue our editorial package. Do we have to have pro cars on the cover? Yes because it helps sell on the newsstand. But that doesn't mean the majority of our coverage is in those classes, although there are some interesting stories there to be told. Thank you all.

Re: Missing Stock&Super Stock Magazine.
Johnny D was one of the biggest fans of SS&DI. I know he produces every issue with its memory in mind.
While it's true Peterson bought the remnants of SS&DI with the plan to "absorb" the title, it's important to remember SS&DI had been on its death bed for years prior to the sale. Monthly circulation never broke 6,000 in the '90s and those of us who were there for a while, ('77-'99 for me), often wondered why Guccione kept the thing alive past 1987. It was a ton of work for very little return. |
Re: Missing Stock&Super Stock Magazine.
Mr DiBartolomeo, first I would like to apologize at being too critical toward your magazine. I took the time to re-read past issues(I have bought everyone of them) of Drag Racing action and found that you had a content of more than 50% of articles dealing with sportsman racing, I was wrong and I hope you'll accept my apologies. The quality of your mag is of an incredible quality if we were to compare to anything publish previously, it looks good but a little more on low buck stuff. I just would like to see a magazine showing the little people out there, the class racer with low bucks to no bucks, the bracket racer who runs with his Street Corvette against box racer with their million dollar engines or the little AMC Gremlin running against the multi-dollar stockers. How about a White Lightning article about some class racer or even bring in Fletcher on racing his Chevelle station Wagon. Kick some bucks down to Bret to get him out of retirement. I know that we must go forward but smetimes we have to keep going back to the well to refresh ourselves. Thanks. Claude Ruel p.s. it's very hard to please everyone

Johnny D - Thanks for keeping the spirit alive.

Re: Missing Stock&Super Stock Magazine.
I have issue# one, Sox signed it at a race, my coolest bit of nostalgia. Steve Collison was a great writer, he is missed. We buy every issue at swap meets, etc., dad bought a whole box over the winter for 10 bucks. The Granny Goose Vette is on the 1975 March cover, the seventies issues are the best in my opinion.

Re: Missing Stock&Super Stock Magazine.
John D. just a suggestion for a future issue. How about a 2012 version of the "Stockerology" issue of SS&DI (March 1976) in Drag Racing Action featuring a variety of different stock classes . This would peak the interest of every racer on this website. Looking at this issue right now and is still as interesting as it was 36 years ago!
Maybe an article on Billy Nees who is a master at killer combos on a budget. Something like this and you have a new subscriber. Then I can add to my collection of drag mags I started back in '67. Just a suggestion.... Thanks. |
Re: Missing Stock&Super Stock Magazine.
over the winter I started working on my SSDI collection and I'm sorry to other magazines but nothing will ever beat the old SSDI, they didnt get caught up in the PR media pro crap most of them are into now. Thanks to Roger Weaver my collection has really grown and i have them in nice sleves and dated notebooks for each year.
