Did the oil pan get Jim Hale the class win? No. Is the pan legal? Yes. Does it help the bearings to live longer? I would say yes. Now, what did get Jim the class win is his many years of refining engines, transmissions, and cars to make the most power and use it efficiently.
Now for the trans brake deal. It is my understanding that someone claimed to have seen him push a button to back up so tech had him take his console apart so they could look for a trans brake wire. They found nothing. Then they had him jack his car up so they could look underneath for a wire. They found nothing. Then they wanted him to pull the pan. This was in between rounds in Eliminations so either way he is not going to be able to make the next round of Eliminations, so he loaded up and left. At the next race which was the Divisional at Tulsa his son was with him and they pulled the pan and let Div 4 tech inspect it. Nothing was found. The way I see it there was never any proof that he had a trans brake in it and the car doesn’t seem to have slowed down any. If anything it may have gotten a little faster. Jim is a stand up guy and yes, he is very good at what he does.

I understand his pain, called to do this between rounds(bad move from tech) ,he should have been the given a chance to do it later at that race!
Not sure what doing it at the next race would prove though?

Something like this, maybe?

What I want to know if they were able to shake them down for the contingency plan.

Don't forget you said that you. I knew I got the inspiration for my pan somewhere-Derby.

Let me tell you a Jim Hale story.......

A few years back I was building a G/SA car, earlier in the year Jim set the G/SA record, so I was very interested in his car and the incremental times it had run on the record pass.

Jim rolls into the track and I walk over to talk to him, he's never met me, we start talking and he invites me into his trailer, jacks the car up and tells me to look it over, gets out his time slips and shows me his record runs, tells HP numbers from his DTS dyno. I will never forget the time Jim spent with me-truly an excellent human being-the BEST! And for the record he built the Mall in my town..........

Your understanding is wrong. Tech was the one that saw him activate a switch to back up at the scales. The switch and wire was found. Refusing to drop the pan is why he was charged for the event with zero points toward his national event total.
