I'm guessing that this picture was from 1974-76. Thanks for the response though. Do you remember the car from when Louis raced it? Fred and I keep planning to go through his old photos but haven't got around to it yet. |

"Too short a trailer? Naw, too long a wheel base... my guys can move that axle housing forward in a jiffy. Heck, it might even hook better so we can loose that 200lb lead-filled bumper at the same time!" :D A couple of my favorites of the late 1970's early '80's Avery's hauler, built from an air-cooled VW single cab, unconventionally raised into the unload position with a single hydraulic ram... pretty innovative in my book! |

Tom,
I like your idea(ROFLMAO), I was thinking one guy says, "hey I got 2 boat trailer axles".... Steve |

These two Peterbuilt pick up trucks where built from four junked Tractors. He built them to haul his 5th wheel trailer. Took him 5yrs each. patience.

:(:( Like I have said before, I think drag racing lost something when enclosed trailers and semi's came into play. It was truly awesome to see all the various race cars on display while driving to each event, truly a road show. I total understand the need to secure the race cars and equipment at a race. Back in the day when you went to the pits, it was awesome to see hundreds of cars and haulers. Nowadays it looks more like a motorhome, RV, enclosed trailer sales lot. |
Re: Best truck, motorhome and trailer pictures
I liked the video too. Passenger cars hauling race cars? Folks on this board insist that an F 150 isn't enough to haul a racer these days. So what, other than the need for security, changed?
Any one recall the preferred method of getting to the races in the 60s as "Car in Toe"? For the younger people, that's not misspelled. Dale |

Boy, that era went away fast...or did it? General rule of thumb was ..tow vehicle weighed as much as the race car and trailer. Some of them were pushing that limit. The dealer sponsored cars liked to provide a nice station wagon for the team. They got advertising that way too. Later on , the independent operators figured out how to split the expenses with a one ton or bigger hauler, and a trailer behind it . We did that , coast to coast, more than once! (Towards the end of the video, see the California teams of Neja and Dissette towing the Barkley / Ripes car out of Englishtown , I believe) |
Re: Best truck, motorhome and trailer pictures
Another old tow vehicle video showing Dave Turners "Keene Hill Hemi" challenger being towed by a Road Runner. He told me he used to tow with a SuperBird also!!

Re: Best truck, motorhome and trailer pictures
One of the best videos I've run across that shows how it was in the "old days" is the one of the boys going across country to the U.S. Nationals in Detroit.
Go to www.youtube.com "Ingenuity in action 1959". It takes less than a 1/2 hour and is pretty entertaining. Yes,, I've gone from flat towing with tow hubs in the '70s to an open trailer and pickup truck and now a motorhome with an enclosed trailer, so I guess I'm part of the problem, not the solution,, so sue me. My 2 cents Danny Durham |

 Danny, you have made the standard progression in getting to the races. I know there isn't a solution to this deal. I just think the earlier versions of getting a race car to the track was more "fun". Like I have said before, it was very exciting seeing the open trailers and ramp trucks parked at motels when the boys (and girls) came to town. :D:D:D With all that being said, I would like to see more of the pictures of what racers used in the past. It would be a chance to look back to the glory days of this awesome sport. :( It is truly a shame that part of the reason for enclosed trailers is to prevent theft of parts and pieces from the racers. I know, when helping racers locally, they would go to the lanes and I would lock up and meet them there. |
Re: Best truck, motorhome and trailer pictures
I wish I would have taken pictures in '95 with my '75 Pontiac Grand Safari Wagon towing my Skylark on a tow dolly. Graduating to the same open trailer I have now in '96 was a lot easier. Got rid of the Wagon and now use a '72 GMC pickup that looks like the "Farmtruck".
