A long time ago around 1975 I saw an NHRA SS car at the Tulsa race track testing during a bracket race. I believe it was a 68 or 69 Olds cutlass. Dark red with the name Bob Horn ( ?) on it. Very impressive since it was an NHRA car. Seldom saw any in real life during the AHRA days around Tulsa. Anyone know anything about this car? Never saw it again and always wondered.

I know of a Gene Horn that had a burgundy 66-67 but he may have predated that time period and may have been in a different area.

As I recall the story Ingersol had changed the trim to a 72 model and the same engine used a slightly smaller valve, which he had installed. So, even after the hit on the 71 he would have still been able to run SS/O. I think they put HP on the 72 combination on the spot in tech and told him he had to run SS/N. Now all of these "facts" could be out of whack since it was 35 years ago. But, maybe someone else may know something about that deal.

This car has little more history.............. this car was originally Dad's 1970 King Olds Smothers Brothers car. it was painted that year all white due to Tom and Dick getting in trouble on tv. at the end of the 1970 season the changes to a 1971 body were very minnor and Dale Smith sent dad the items to turn the car in to a '71 that is the year it was painted with the blue"fish scale" as dad calls it and ran the car in stock almost winning the division 2 championship. as 1972 rolled around the changes to the from factory included a hood change the original hood is still in his shop mint cond. as we all know NHRA rolled stock into super stock and dad ran the car as a SS/O all of '72 as for when he sold it to Buddy not sure but Dad then went to Modfied with a 67 Camaro.
So Buddy's car came right out of the Factory wars. To the tune of it helped oldsmobile win the manfactures cup in 71,72.

Interesting that the Ingersoll car was the Smothers car at first.

Guess nobody runs Concorde street tires on a B/Stock car any more . :)

Most people remeber the 1969 Smothers Brothers team the most and in 1969 dad had his W-31 Convertible King Olds car of which went back to King olds at the end of 69 and Dad recived the 70 Hardtop.
We have the 69 W-31 at the shop looking for sponsor's to resotore the car. We even have the invoice between Louie King and Dad with the matching VIN number.

Re: Best Oldsmobile Super Stock Of All Time?

Glad to hear from you Jeremy. I knew the history of the "Fish Scale", but I'm glad you brought it to light here. There is little mention of some big names in Oldsmobile Stock/Super Stock in this thread. Your Dad Jim, Ron Garey, John Troxell (who I just saw Wednesday), Woodland and Andresen, Paul Mayo, Ron McHugh (and his brother Kevin), F.J.Smith, Pete Kost, just to name a few. Yes, it was common for Dale Smith to provide parts and unauthorized factory assistance to some of the racers. I have some handwritten notes from Dale Smith that were sent to the drivers of my "Anderson Olds" '69 W-31. Olds had some paperwork that some of the more prominent racers compiled, and those handouts have become quite collectible today. The paperwork included part numbers, tuning suggestions, suspension settings, etc. I am lucky enough to have two of them.
As for my favorite? Of course in Stock Eliminator that would have to be my '69 W-31 pictured in my avatar! I do have a biased opinion on that pick! Super Stock? Probably John Troxell's SS/OA '72....not the most famous by a long shot, but MY favorite. I'd say that the Waibel/Ingersoll '70-'72 probably won the most.
I heard you found your Dad's old W-31 and were planning a resto. Also, Tweed Vorhees is restoring the old Chesrown/Ron Garey car. I'm hoping both of those racers are restored to their former glory !

Gene Horn's burgundy 66 442 was the Brainbeau car that won C/S at Indy in 1966 with Loyed Woodland driving. Ross Hunsinger now owns the car and is restoring it.

There have been many great Oldsmobiles from the all over the country. Since I am from the Northwest, the Kost Brothers (Pete and Bill) have a soft spot for me. I have known them since the 70's and have seen many great running Oldsmobiles form them. I know Pete even had one of the Smothers Brothers cars for awhile. My favorite is the '72 Rainier Beer car. I don't have any pictures of it, but remember seeing at the local tracks all the time. We lost Bill a few years ago, but Pete is still out there doing what he loves at 81 years of age. The car Pete drives at this time is a 1977 Cutlass w/ a 403 in it. Last seen in J/SA

If you include Stockers, how come nobody mentioned Buck Jednick's Omega? During the two years NHRA initiated the index system with no breakout, he was deadly.

Your right forgot all about the Omega and Buck Jedneck , what ever happened to him Dwight ? They were killer back then.

Not sure. I talked with him the year after NHRA did away with the no breakout, but that was the last.

Re: Best Oldsmobile Super Stock Of All Time?

I ran into him in the early 80's at an IHRA race. He had an Opel I think , running in Modified. I believe he had moved up into the Carolinas.
Never heard any more after that.
I guess he went the way of IHRA Modified Eliminator.

Although they are Oldsmobiles, a high percentage of the Super Stock cars are Chevy powered.

You are correct but Oldsmobile gave a lot of support to the Stock and Super Stock racers Great Contingency program! Just ask guys like Jeff Taylor FJ Smith Wally Clark and a lot of others! They set the standard!

Olds was very active in the 1980s for example. A big player in Pro Stock with Warren Johnson, Dave Smith, etc. John Force and others ran Olds (bodies anyway). Olds developed the DRCE which has become the huge aftermarket arena of replacement BBC stuff.
