Re: Who makes the ugliest automobile

Aubrey, 82-92 Camaro come on... the new Camaro takes quite sometime to get use too but compare to a Fiat 500 it's a Picasso(in his later life). I'm sure that the people at Fiat wanted to associate J'LOs wide rear with the 500 in their commercials.lol Like I've said before, the ugliest North American Car from the past are works of art compared to the pieces of crap being sold now. Re: Who makes the ugliest automobile

Oh heck yeah, Claude !
It seemed to go hand in hand with the MASS INTRUSION of front wheel drive junk from all the manufacturers. A fundamental design requirement in an automobile, in respect to proportions, can be seen in the postion of the road wheels ( OK, a little European there ).
Basically, the distance from the front lower edge of the front wheel well, to the edge of the front bumper, can not be greater than the distance from the lower rear of the front wheel well, to the front lower edge of the door. If it is longer, the car has the appearance of tipping over itself ( besides p*** poor weight distribution ).

I recently read an article by some long time, big shot car critic, who cited what he has observed. Basically, he said that people like cars to look like us .... !
I thought it was kind of silly.
HHHMMM...
maybe not ?
You start messing around with headlight postions ( or number of them ), grille postion ( or lack there of ), countour of the roof, etc..... and you're going to offend people.
The assteck / avalanche... a case in point. chunks of junk all over them.
People don't look like that !

I've been meaning to write an article myself, on this subject.
New vehicles... seemingly GM in particular... WHAT THE HELL is with the "colours" ? ... or should I say complete absence of them ?
I mean really... you can have grey, charcoal grey, light blue grey, light green grey, dark brown grey, dusty grey, goldish grey.....
FFFFFFFFFF#%@ING GREY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

whoa

take a pill here
! !

yup
If it's not a Super Bird / Daytona .... it don't need no big ***** snout on it !

Ugly as sin, but what a claim to fame.

The "original" Mopar Drag Pack

This particular car was a radio and heater delete with a 3 on the tree.

Oh, OK. There are uglier cars than these AMC's. But wagons sure have good "natural" weight distribution. Not that these 2 really need it. lol

I had a friend who was an diesel mechanic and own a Hugo, well after they closed all the dealerships in the west he bought a couple of diesel models and since he didn't care who saw him driving it because it was the ugliest thing he ever owned he started tuning them for incredible fuel mileage, he never bought fuel ever again since his brother was making bio-fuel(which I have been using in my Bus Motorhome since 2005). Since he worked in a Caterpillar garage and the car gets hit by the occasional hit by swinging blades in the yard, he finds that after 400.000 km he's quite happy with his ugly duckling. (in his garage sits a like new 71 440 Charger RT with 25.000 miles on it), Myron congratulation. CR

Mark - I did own a new one for about a week back in the day - bought it at the auction ( brand spankin' new - they had about 20 of 'em that day - think I paid around 11 G's ) and sold it at another soon after .What most don't know is that the changes were made to these were done by hand after they were built and are hands down having the worst bodywork ever done and sold to the public .

All this plus they only offered a extra mild 305 small block - not a very exciting package - but it worked for NASCAR ..............And after all these years still not a "collectible"..........

This car could have turned out to be "Chieftain 4" with a warmed over 350 or ? ? ?

It was truly embarrasing. I believe there is a picture of me in my high school yearbook posing on the hood of my Eldorado. I even had the obligatory "Flock of Seagulls" haircut.

Classic good news/bad news scenario: You're a pre-teen car nut and your dad finally buys his first new car in your lifetime. Bad news: It's a stripped 62 Dodge Dart four door.

I swear it warped me so bad that I actually bought a 59 Nash Metropolitan for my first car a couple of years later. A picture of our driveway would have no doubt been on the internet had it existed back then.

So there's two cars that should be high on the list.

There really is a reason for it being short a wheel other than the designer was a bit odd.

The registration fees in England were pretty steep, but due to a loophole in the laws a three wheeled car got charged the much cheaper rate of a motorcycle.

I've had some hard times, but I don't know if I'd ever be that desperate.

Nothing wrong with that! I went to school in Indiana and had a couple of friends from South Bend.

When we'd go up there for a weekend I was always amazed at how many Studies were running around. One of my roomates had an early Hawk which I thought was really cool. I remember the dash, with its aircraft-looking gauges and all the cool toggle switches.

Another friend had a Lark, and taught me to check on the trunk lid for the "VI" or "VIII" emblems.

While they made some legitimate grocery getters, I don't think Studebaker gets the respect they deserve. No, they never engineered a small block Chevy or Ford, but they had some pretty creative stuff for the time.

Quite a few contenders for ug-a-ly champ, but many are fringe models, or very low sales, I think the Aztec remains a lock considering it was from a major mfg and sold a fair amount, but I must admit the field is plentiful....some real lookers

That's what I was getting at but I didn't do a very good job. Because of the factory, I think there were more Studebakers per square foot than any other place on earth. Bendix was there also so it was sort of motor city but in a 180 degrees out kind of way.

Studebaker always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Not many people remember that they joined up with Mercedes-Benz way back when. Yuppies hadn't been invented yet, so the Studie dealers didn't sell many Benzes.

Speaking of which, one of my favorite trivia bets involves Ford and Honda. Hardly anyone remembers that there were Honda step throughs being sold from Ford showrooms. That program didn't last long either.

I can't argue with the Aztek, but it didn't start out as ugly as it ended up. The concept car was pretty radical but not that much different than a Pontiac Vibe (Toyota Matrix). Of course the beancounters got involved. They signed off on building the car but at the last minute mandated that it had to fit an existing platform. The wheelbase, overhangs, and pretty much the entire proportion of the car got changed and the rest is history.

Funny thing is that the Buick versions are pretty popular around here. Bring the headlights down beside the grill, put a fish mouth on it, and Susie Soccer Mom just can't get enough.

As long as we're talking about styling, Mopar should get some attention too. Before the "Forward Look" and the outrageous cars of the 60s, the man calling the shots was named Elwood Engel. He was a pretty traditional guy and wore a hat wherever he went. Trouble was, he insisted that any Chrysler product be produced so that a gent could get in and sit down with his hat on. That didn't do much for styling.

No wonder Virgil Exner went for the wild side when the chains were freed. Sort of like a preacher's kid, I guess.:D

When the Aztek first came out, I drove into the local Pontiac dealer to show it to my brother, he couldn't believe that they actually built a car that looked like that.
The salesman came running out to see if I wanted to buy one, and I ask him if it's true that the Aztek comes with a bag to put over your head so no-one can see you driving it....

When the Aztek first came out I was spending a lot of time at my local Pontiac dealer - and heard many , many comments like the one above ...........bet those bags are collectors items today .....but the Aztek -- not so much ! ! On the flip side we sold a bunch as used cars that had the tent / camping option .........we might have liked it in the sixties instead of the back seat ! !
