Can't forget about the '65 Plymouth called the 'Melrose Missile'...it started out life as a Super Stocker then was transformed into an altered wheel base A/FX...here's a couple of before & after shots of it.

Hey Hemi Moose, have you ever seen a photo of a 65 Plymouth SS car converted to an altered wheelbase car and the turned into a roadster called The Satellite? It belonged to an old, deceased friend of mine and the only time I ever saw the car it had been turned into a doghouse in someones back yard.

Can't say I've heard of that one before, but there was a white '64 Race Hemi Plymouth Belvedere called 'The Satellite' but it was restored.

Here's a factory photo of the fiberglass parts they used back then on the 1965 AWB cars they built...it all weighed only 80 pounds.

The '65 Melrose Missle car also went through the "metamorphisis" of SS to A/FX to roadster. Cecil Yother says he still has the car,, I'd like to see it and photograph it if I can. Hopefully, I'll run into Cecil next month when the swap meet season kicks off up here. See Hemi Moose's post # 81.

Re: The Factory Experimental Cars

Here's the story on the Dart directly from Mr. Paul Candies:

"Woody Car that Chrysler designed (piece of sh-t) until we took the leaf springs with traction bars off.

RAMCHARGERS/ GOLDEN COMMANDO each had one.
Almost went broke trying to make this thing work; went straight every run (straight left/straight right/straight up) but seldom straight down the race track.
After we copied the Logghe suspension it was ok."

Pretty cool...........

See you at the races,
Wayne Kerr

What do you guys think about the modern day awb cars

Liteweight 01-10-2013 02:44 PM

Re: The Factory Experimental Cars

I think they are a very cool addition to the world of hotrodding. There are a limited number of people that actually know anything bout the era when these cars were originally built & the class of racing that evolved from them. I believe they are a great education for future generations of drag racing fans.

ps: plus-------- they're just plain badazz freakin awesome

I had young people looking at the car and they were asking questions ,and then some people had not seen an awb car in the flesh since 1967. I took my car out to 6 races and everywhere I went it was the same thing it was so cool to see people get excited about a period in drag racing that was so short lived.
