Another one of the 'questionable' combinations
1965 Corvette 327/250 HP Fell into the {11.50 to 11.99 Wt/HP} > J/SA Class in 1970 and 1971. Let me explain http://110.imagebam.com/download/qfA...y_news-141.JPG |
Re: Early 1970s Raceway News Scans
Paul,
Seems like an incredible amount of cars for such a small track. I never made it to Dover when it was open...I stopped by for a quick walk-through...early '80's...but there was nothing to see... Any info on that M & M shop that I think was in the area? Seem to remember that logo on quite a few class-type cars...did they have a machine shop? If you mentioned them before...could you please direct me to that thread? Thanks! Pete...Sorry, didn't mean to hi-jack the thread...BUT I've got to ask this question... What was the name of the snack-bar/restaurant...in the early '70's....on Rte 527? It was on the LH side as you headed to the track from Rte 18...maybe a couple of miles or so? A favorite for racers...we stopped there to inspect the "eye-candy" being towed to and from the track.... |

Re: Early 1970s Raceway News Scans
Billy is correct ! I lived on that road. Pete, the Ave was the place to be, yes I remember Gus, he is my age but I remember Dickey Lyons more, we were well antiquated, he on his cop cycle and me with red lights in my rear window !

SS Wannabee
M & M Speed and Custom Owner; Rich Marchese Rich had '2 locations. I was at the Poughkeepsie Store {Route 44} many times picking up Speed Parts from 1969 thru 1971, before my father started selling Speed Equipment M & M was one of the top Speed Parts outlet stores throughout the Hudson Valley. M & M could get you the newly released Speed Parts 'fast'. They did not have a Machine Shop, as they farmed it out. But I do believe Rich was looking to get a Machine Shop going in the late-1970's http://www.doverdragstrip.com/phpBB3...le.php?id=2971 |

Those were the daze... Pete *I sold my collection of approximately 100 issues to Mike McCandless, son of Herb McCandless because (you guessed it) I needed money at the time (heck, I still need money!). Mike then gave them to his dad as a gift so at least my issues went to a good cause. :) |

That race was a very good one and attracted quite a few well-known cars as evidenced by the Rod Shop's appearance (all the way from Ohio). Pete |
Re: Early 1970s Raceway News Scans
Who remembers Trans-End? And that one of the owners was Charlie Castaldo?

Re: Early 1970s Raceway News Scans
Dover Drag Strip
Sunday's Only Biggest problem, they were only NHRA sanctioned in 1965, and then in 1970. Car counts were around 250 to 275 in the Spring and the Fall. 300 to 350 in the Summer. If there was a Big $$$ Event, the track could pull in the high 300's If there was a big NHRA 'NED 1' Points Meet going on at another track, then the car counts would drop to 250. |
Re: Early 1970s Raceway News Scans
I bought the Domini and Shepherd Plymouth and painted it red.
|
Re: Early 1970s Raceway News Scans
That's really cool Frank...keeping the Domini and Shepherd car alive....
Ok on Cantore's...and we did stop there to check out the cars....but for some reason never went inside....maybe we were too young? |
Re: Early 1970s Raceway News Scans
But the place I remember was a snack bar in a wooden building...on the same side
as Cantore's...but towards Route 18....I think? Served regular comfort-style food but maybe with a German-flair? Cantore's was a brick building...Anybody remember this place? Yes I do remember Trans-End....and the "Just-Me" SS/I Camaro...a hard charger at that time...They always had a repairs trailer at most of the bigger events...lots of stick guys used them at that time... Anybody remember Trans-Torque? Think it arrived later as a subsidiary of Trans-End...for the automatic guys. Possibly located in the greater Old Bridge area? A buddy of mine took a smoked powerglide there for repairs but after inspection was told it was all junk...and so was his season. |

I remember this Opel GT in BB/Gas.

Re: Early 1970s Raceway News Scans
Trans End was owned and operated by Dave Sipola, also ran a SS AMC driven by Ted Kijeck.
Ron Sirianni is recovering from major surgery, I spoke to him a few weeks back and he was doing well. |

1973 NHRA Super Stock and Stock Class Weight Factors
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/a...0-jpg.1153555/ Cook and Leong 1971 Dodge Charger R/T ~ 426 Hemi ~ Class 'B/SA' In 1973, The NHRA had re-factored the 1971 426/425 HP {Hydraulic Camshaft} to {450 HP} #3839 lbs. ~ 450 HP = 8.53 Wt/HP Now that was one nice weight break for 1973. For Stock Class, any tires {DOT approved} that could fit within the Rear Fenderwell was permitted. This Charger R/T had 12" Wide Tires. In 1973 Stock Class, you had run thru a full exhaust system {No Headers}. Rumor has it, that this 1971 Dodge Charger R/T was 'chemically engineered' at the factory by Chrysler. http://111.imagebam.com/download/1Jd...y_news-157.JPG |
Re: Early 1970s Raceway News Scans
Artie is on here sometimes maybe he can give so info on the charger.

I remember being behind that 1971 Charger R/T '426 Hemi' in the Staging Lanes at Englishtown. I was running my 1969 440 'Cuda in B/SA as well. That Charger had 'Mother Monster' rear tires, which were nearly a Foot wide. ........................ |

Pete,
This should be from 1974 In the above photo, that is Charlie Castaldo in his 1974 Pro/Stock Duster. B/SA National Records * 11.76 ................ Held by a 1970 Plymouth Superbird '426 Hemi' * 117.44 MPH ..... Held by a 1970 Plymouth Cuda 440-6 'Six-Barrel' http://111.imagebam.com/download/1Jd...y_news-157.JPG |

Re: Early 1970s Raceway News Scans
Pete,
You are correct. 1974 In Stock Class, you couldn't run Slicks, but you were allowed Monster Mother Tires, as long as they fit within the Rear Fenderwell. I believe Ray Cook and Art Leong had N50- x 15's on the 1971 Charger R/T. I had Concorde G60 x 14's on my green 69' 440 Cuda for 1974. Thankfully, we were allowed Headers in 1974, but still had to retain the full exhaust system w/tail pipes. I ran against them on a 'Cold *** Day', and I couldn't hook up, and broke loose sideways coming off the line. I nearly T-Boned the Charger. |
