Number 77th qualifier actually is the 43rd qualifier based on mineshaft rule since there are 84 old iron cars currently qualified this requires 43 old cars to be -.85 under. He is -.929 under so the mineshaft rule is in effect. |

Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
Won't take sides in the new car debate but I will add some food for thought.
In 2008 (the last year before ANY new cars showed up) there were 169 Stockers on the final sheet at Indy and the bump was .938-under. In 2015, there are 177 cars on the sheet after Q1 and the bump is .798-under but I'd anticipate that I will be in the .90-92 under range by the time we're done. Obvious conclusion: If I want t run Indy, I'd better have a car that can run .92-under or quicker. Also have to wonder what it was like in the late 1960s when the Super Stock eliminator was a 32 car field (mostly class winners) and there were as many as 200 cars on the entry list. Hard to imagine sending that many drivers home early but then again, we had 4 national events in 1968. |
Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
Go ahead Larry. 10.17 in B weight. I know you got more
|
Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
Random notes after Super Stock Q1:
160 cars made runs Bump is Don Bales SS/AH Hemi car at -.557 (8.743) Only four cars more than a second under (Skillman, Cotten, Leopold Jr. and Twitchell) 21 Hemi Challenge cars (but only 8 of them are currently qualified) a pair of '68 Barracudas racing as GT cars so obviously not part of the Hemi Challenge (Eric Bell and Eric Bardekoff). |
Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
Kevin,
I'm pretty sure that 2008 was prior to the .30 index adjustment. So the .938 would be a .638 in relation to the index. So the field has picked up a tenth. |
Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
PATSY - KEVIN - KEN ... fabulous job of keeping those of us who are elsewhere well informed. I Wouldn't go to the extent of choosing to stay home on account of the on-line 'play-by-play', but its surely a wonderful alternative for both the 'would be' competitor and the racing fan that simply just couldn't make the trip.
You're all truly a valuable resource for the sport we love! |

Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
I think I'd pay good money to watch Chris Holbrook's Cobra Jet and Clay Arnett's COPO run a best-of-three match race. They are currently the gold standard of supercharged Factory Stock racers and I think it would be every bit as exciting (with similar elapsed times) as a Bob Glidden vs. Lee Shepherd match from about 1981.Now, we just need to get someone (Barton? Tueton?) to build a competitive blown Mopar.

Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
While I'm flooding this thread with a lot of random thoughts how about this:
The Factory Stock Showdown (FS/XX) winner takes on the Hemi Challenge champ for an "Indy King of the Hill" title. Heads-up, no breakout. Wolkwitz (8.554) and Holbrook (8.560) current leaders in each class. |
Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
Only the FS/X and FS/XX cars are immune to AHFS because they aren't factored based on HP and weight. Everything else still follows the same rules.

Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
It has warmed up a bunch! 90 right now! Sitting in the stands is brutal. Most everyone slowed down .05-.10 unless they had problems on the first run. Sherman picked up to go in front of us in B/SA.
More later. |

Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
Stock Q2 sheet is hot off the press.
180 cars now. That should be all of them but who knows, maybe one or two in hiding. 128-car bump is now Tex Miller's 11.018 (-.832) 42 cars a second under or quicker 27 cars in the Factory Showdown Roy Hill got his Cobra Jet to behave. Kept it in his own lane this time. Notables who aren't in yet: Mike Pustelny, Daren Poole-Adams, and Brainerd champ Randi Lynn Shipp. Stat of the day: 17 new cars aren't in yet More later... |

Tom this is live from thread, not a thread to tell us whats wrong with NHRA. We are here to have fun and let the racers that could not make it, know whats going on. This type of post just pisses me off, I don't usually say anything, but you need to start you own thread. Feel free to post on how NHRA screwed you, but please don't post it in this thread. A little respect for the people who are trying to have fun would be nice. Back to what people are here for, they just called Super Stock in to lanes, Super Comp is just finishing up. I have lot a photos and a few videos, It will be awhile before I can finish editing them, so stay tuned I will be back. |
Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
I am here to enjoy the pics and storys of Indy not to hear bashing of NHRA

Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
I see Kurt Neighbor is running a SS/GA 69 Mustang, any pics of that car?
The have John Stock in some weird FGT class listed as a 67 Mustang? Is that another car or the Cobra sports car misidentified again? |
Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY

also, Kurt Neighbor and Kim Fritts are both racing in Super Stock and Jim Bailey in Stock. Cool to see three guys who used to race Alcohol Funny Cars (and Top Fuel in Bailey's case) turn to class racing. |
Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
Kevin, Jason Line in Stock too. Is Cagnazzi the PS team owner?
Any idea if there are any former Hemi Challenge winners bringing Mustang Pro Stockers there? I wonder if Kurt's is the maroon one in Post #49? Don't see any name or number on it. |

Look at all the 8 second stockers after 2nd qualifier.

Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
Isn't that 426 wedge stuck with a tiny AVS carb? Maybe the Dominator superceded it, he's running real good.
Add Roy Hill to the former Pro racers list. I enjoy the pictures with the drivers by the cars. |

Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
Just to set the record straight on Roy Hill's wheelstand. Roy was running against me in my N/SA 4 cylinder Mustang. Roy landed on the 330 foot cone and gave me about a .7 second better 330 foot time, than normal. He completed the run in my lane, with me following behind and running slower than I wanted. I saw the giant wheelstand and had left foot on the brake as well as both hands on the steering wheel, just in case. Roy came over to my brother, later in the day, and gave a sincere apology for ruining my first qualifying attempt. Roy said he only stayed in it to protect the front end from coming down too fast and didn't know he was headed into my lane. My brother said he seemed honest and sincere with the apology. I think that is all we could ask anybody to do under the circumstances. Roy had the car under control for the second run and I wish him a good race!

Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
How is Jeff running in B/SA?. I thought that all the new cars were in FS classes. Is there some new combo?
|
Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
It's not a drag pack its in the guide.
|
Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
It is what is being called a showroom stock Challenger. It is basically a street SRT 392 Challenger.

Good point Chris. I thought the new classes (FS/A thru FS/L) were created for the new (2008 and newer) cars that are not Drag Packs, Copos or Cobra Jets. Or are there even more new classes now than before, just curious -not complaining. Oh and just for the record. I think this thread is just awesome and should be for fun info from Indy. It's just day one of qualifying and already over 100 posts - VERY COOL. |
Re: Live from the US Nationals INDY
I was told by someone who spoke to him that he planned to run the 426 Street Wedge and believed he would be the fasted "traditional" Stocker at the Big Go, and he is.
It is a Carter AFB. |

Its been a long day, hot and humid. For the most part everything went smooth. Roy Hill had a wheelstand almost get out of control, but it all ended well. robzneed4speed did catch it on tape and should be posting sometime tonight.
Super Stock in the lanes, more photos to come. |
