I agree that the smaller forced induction engine will make more power. Look at the waves Buddy Ingersoll made with his 6 cylinder turbo Buick in Pro Stock many years ago! (Forgot if that was in NHRA or other sanctioning bodies.) The little engine Mustangs are showing that now in FS. But I believe if Pro Stock is left alone, as is, for too long, there won't be anything left to save!

Pro Stock was hot and exciting when it competed at Local tracks.
Then there was Outlaw Pro Stock that was exciting to go to.
Do not see any independent Pro Stock races at local tracks anymore.
Not even a team coming for practice.

But you see tons of other super quick heads up cars taking a lap.
Lots of street racers come to watch.
All kinds American and Imported cars making large amounts of power.

Imports have been an ignored segment with IHRA and NHRA.
When the local tracks have import day.
Tons of cars arrive, compete and they have their car shows.
They come to have fun.

As I remember back in our day it was the street scene that drove excitement.
We showed up to the drag strip to watch the big boys and rumors.

All steel bodies? Just a guess steel would add I would think 85 to 100 pds.

Didn't read through all the post and someone might have covered this but aerodynamics is the big thing, Challenger is a brick compared to Camaro of Mustang

But the Challengers are a pretty brick, especially in Fuschia or Blue.

A brand new Cuda model might be even prettier some day.

Couple of years. Maybe they won't be bricks. Somehow I never thought about my cars as bricks. I guess the new car we are building this year will be a newer brick. Maybe it won't be dried out and we can 'reform' it.

If NHRA wants to save PS (I don't think they do) they need to treat it as an equal with the nitro classes. TV exposure sucks, payout sucks. The economy is slow to recover, and that drove lots of good teams out of the class. I agree with an earlier post, that if it was competed on a regional level as well, it would attract Comp & SS racers to move up. They would have to limit the number of races the "full timers" could enter, but if you let the lesser funded teams be able to compete and win at tracks, then you gain exposure to the fans & overall class interest. More match races could be booked, etc. My feeling is that NHRA wants to let PS die on the vine and let those awful Pro Mods take over. Possibly the only thing worse than waiting 7 minutes for fuel cars to burnout and stage, is watching aborted run after run in PM. I feel the interest in all of motorsports is waning and once the middle-agers like myself move on, there will be little left.

After seeing this they might as well call Pro Stock the GM Jr Pro Mod series, pitiful.

Totally agree, pitiful.

I believe the NHRA has zero interest in revitalizing Pro Stock and would prefer Pro Mod as a replacement.
The theory being discussed on this thread is a pipe dream for those of us who witnessed the birth of Pro Stock.
The NHRA wants to simplify not complicate things.

What the heck, that's what the street car should look like, it's better and WAY more beautiful looking.

True. I love my wimpy V6 street brick. Inferno Red, sort of like Candy Red.

If you would put a flat hood on the new NHRA Camaro, it looks a lot like a Toyota Camry.

Better show up with a truckload of sheet metal. Your going to need it. So if I'm reading this correctly, move the Factory Race Cars currently running stock.... Into a newly formed Pro Stock?

No "sources" listed - looks to be all speculation. Written by by Mike (Shabs) Shabarek

Now while this isn’t the official Press Release that you’ll read from Glendora, it is very much so a probable reality. As most of us know Mopar has left Pro Stock. Now while it is the racers favorite class by far over T/F and F/C it is dying. That is no surprise. After losing several teams with the 2016 rules package this past season to say that this writers favorite class is on life support is a massive understatement.

Here’s my prediction, Pro Stock as we know it will not exist in 2019.

Why?

Well it’s simple, the cars have not related to the production model for over 15 years now. The cars cost too much money to purchase, engine cost and maintenance are astronomical, and it takes four guys to service a car between rounds. If I am an executive at GM or Ford or Mopar why on Earth would I support the NHRA’s form of Pro Stock? Now in the beginning the Pro Stock class emerged from the production-based Super Stock class in 1970 with a more liberal set of rules and an absence of handicaps. In that previous sentence the words “Production-Based” have incomprehensible weight. The early days of Sox & Martin, “Dyno” Don Nicholson, & Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins racing Super Stock cars with wider tires, bigger engines, and more elaborate chassis setups brought the crowds in by groves and the old adage of “win on Sunday, sell on Monday” became a way of life for racers & executives alike.

As Merle Haggard said “Are the good times really over for good?” I’d have to say HELL NO when it comes to Pro Stock.

So what’s gonna happen? Very simple. What if I told you there’s a “Pro Stock in Waiting” class? One with literally over 100 cars ready to go RIGHT NOW!! GM has produced 69 COPO’s every year for the past few years. Ford & Mopar have other ways of purchasing for customers but from our best educated guesses there’s about 150 Cobra Jets and Drag Pak’s floating around. Whether we see naturally aspirated or supercharged entries allowed are about a 50/50 shot.

But a few things that should not be changed are:
1.) 9″ Tires
2.) Factory Mass Produced Based Engines
3.) All Engine Blocks & Cylinder Heads Factory Produced
4.) Automatic Transmission Cars Get No Weight Break (encourages stick shift cars)
5.) Stock Style Front Suspension
6.) Stock Quarters, Roof, and Doors
7.) Stock Interior
8.) 48″ Wheelie Bar(s) Maximum Length
9.) 4 Forward Speeds Maximum For Stick Cars, 3 Forward Maximum for Automatics

What will this create? High seven second cars that look EXACTLY like Camaro’s, Challenger’s, and Mustang’s both inside and out that the customer can go buy seven days a week from the dealership. The racing on the track will be extremely tight and exciting with such a small tire and four speeds. Big wheelstands, pedal fests, and big time MPH from Factory Race Cars in a heads up format. What’s not to love?

Let the discussion begin.

all this has been proposed 2 years ago to nhra but at that time it was called
Jr pro stock same guide lines pretty much but when your dealing with def
ears........................................

I agree. Too many crashes & aborted runs with small tires. Slower factory cars? Nobody would watch those for sure.
Ask the present Pro Stock owners what they need.

Pro stock should be left to its own end.

FS cars should have their own classes heads up only. 3200 lb.

FSA fastest 350cu in supercharged.

FSB 426/427/428 NA

FSC 350 NA

no FS cars allowed in stock This will put*stock guys in these classes.

The pro stock guys/galls who no longer can afford PS can go to these classes.

Keep in mind once you add PRO to the class you will increase costs by 10 fold. I know you guys have great R&D programs but when you put a staff of several brilliant racing teams on it they will find stuff that will cost everyone money to keep up...

why not net the P/S cars keep from the back of the block all the same as now. Then let them have a certain cubic inch, accepted block, factory heads no billet pieces and a power adder that is the same for everyone. I know John Mihovetz goes 5s with a lot of factory pieces..
