Re: Original hemi dart information
I remember reading a few years ago that the drummer for Bob Seger's Silver Bullett Band was a car guy, and he owned a 1968 LO23 Dart. He ended up getting released from the band after getting heavily involved in drugs, he was replaced by the drummer from Grand Funk Railroad who still is with the band today. I wonder what happened to that car?

Re: Original hemi dart information
bass player had one, black one advertised as his has been for sale online for some time.
|
Re: Original hemi dart information
Don't know about getting kicked out for drugs - don't follow the band .
Owner was the bass player Chris Cambell - he had a nice A990 car as well. |

Re: Original hemi dart information
This should 'shed' some new light to one of the LO23 Hemi Darts.
LO23M8B297862 Originally thought to be Gil Clark's SS/BA Hemi Dart, and listed as the (#5 LO23) Hemi Dart built. It was purchased by Ron Mancini in 1969. In actuality, Gil Clark only drove the SS/BA Hemi Dart. Gil was an AHRA-contracted racer. Thought to be out based out of Toronto, Canada, he was listed as being from Lexington, Michigan by 'WheelSpin News', an Ontario, Canada based drag-racing newsletter. The car was purchased and owned by Don R. Brewer. Mr. Brewer owned a Dodge Dealership, in Port Huron, Michigan. 'Don R. Brewer Dodge' (About 1 hour northeast of Detroit). The car was lettered 'Rim-Fire'. The SS/BA Hemi Dart competed at the major AHRA-events, including Detroit Dragway, Michigan, and Niagara Dragstrip, New York, and Ontario Canada-based Dragstrips (ie; Cayuga Dragway, Grand Bend Dragstrip and St.Thomas Dragway) in 1968 and early/mid 1969 for Don R. Brewer. According to further VIN # listings, it appears that this Dart was the #10 LO23 built. Photo's of this car exists; @ NHRA Super Stock Event @ Cayuga Dragway, Canada (May 1968) @ AHRA Springnationals @ Bristol, Tennessee (June 1968) @ 'Canadian Challenge' @ Cayuga Dragway, Canada (July 1968) @ Super Stock Event @ Grand Bend, Ontario, Canada (April 1969) @ AHRA Grand Nationals @ Detroit Dragway (May 1969) @ AHRA Springnationals @ Bristol, Tennessee (June 1969) @ 1st Annual Popular Hot Rodding Championships (June 1969) @ Martin US 131 Dragway, Michigan pc |

That second event should read "Super Stock Event" @ Grand Bend Ontario Canada, April 1969. The only photo of the Rimshot Dart that I know of was in Wheelspin News at the Cayuga 1968 event. I'll post coverage of the event in the Canadian section of the website soon........ http://www.colesy-juniorstockforum.com/forum/index.php |

Re: Original hemi dart information
Hemi Moose & Paul,
I had the same question - the blue paint is the first paint scheme - in 68. Note the dealer sponsor on the door. Typically, the ordering dealer would sponsor for that model year - sometimes longer - I know of other cars that a different dealer sponsored the car in 69. Note that the photo in S&M shop (which has to be 1970 judging by the Superbird and Duster) the car is in the same paint as when it was found - orange. The orange car also has no dealer sponsorship - which is typical. I think most of Dave's cars were orange after this (not including his P/S effort and the 2- red 70 Barracudas). Mark J |

Yes I purchased it from Reed, but no progress yet, been busy collecting parts. Found a 66 Hemi and a Hustle Stuff slick-shifted 4-speed this year, now it is time to start working on it this winter!

Not many pro catagory racers came from the Razorback state and I have not seen that one since back when it was new.(Once at Carlisle Dragway, Ark) Someone on here stated it is still alive and well and in Kansas I believe. Still amazes me how many of these made it through the years. Again, thanks for the memory. |
Re: Original hemi dart information
The photo series with Rich Thomas and Preston Honea appear to be taken at Pacific, Missouri. At the time it was the largest track in the St Louis area.
After reading this great thread, I still have a question that I haven't seen answered. Has there ever been a statement as to why the Darts were hardtops and not post sedans? It's just something I was curious about. I suppose Mopar was trying to market the Scat Pack and Rapid Transit System (which were all hardtops) but that didn't bother them with the A990 cars. |
Re: Original hemi dart information
FWIW It's been stated in the past in several publications that Dodge did use the hardtop since they were interested in promoting/selling the more expensive hardtops, GTs, GTS, etc. with the exposure they would get with their 68 drag racing program. So you're correct.
