Charlie, when Katrina hit New Orleans on Monday, I had just bought my 67 Camaro on EBay, which was located in Roswell, New Mexico, the Friday before Katrina.
I was employed by the New Orleans Police Dept for 24 years at that time and was called in to work on Sunday morning before Katrina. We were told to pack enough clothing to last several days. Little did I know I would be away from home for about a month! I know what the people of New York and New Jersey are going through. It seems like help just is not going to come! We had no food and little water. If it were not for Walmart, we would not have had under were and socks. Eventually, Walmart brought it 7 tractor trailer truck loads of water for the people stranded in New Orleans. It was the worst time of my 30 career! I only hope and pray for the folks effected by the storm to get their lives back to normal as soon as possible! It took almost 3 months to have my 67 Camero delivered to me. The truck driver would only bring the car as far south as Jackson, Ms. I picked up the car and the project started. Sorry for the rant.

I don't call it a rant. I cannot imagine being in your shoes at that time.

Hurricaine Camile was a life changing event.
Katrina was a life changing event.
Sandy is the same.
Mistakes were made then and will be again.
Storms of this size bring new challenges each time they arrive.

And, just as in battle, some wounds heal on the surface but the scar tissue runs very deep, for all of us.

Is there anybody here who is from the Altoona PA area or more specifically Huntingdon PA (half hour or so east of Altoona)? If so did the town flood and do you know if they have power and internet? I have been trying to reach someone in that area since mid week and cannot. I know in 2004 Ivan flooded the town but have no idea if it was bad that far inland this time. Thanks for the help

Looks like Island Dragway and Englishtown are closed this weekend...both without
power...and still cleaning up..

Gasoline in TIGHT supply in those areas...

Do I have it right that Atco's up and running?

Any other strips affected by the storm?

Sunshine over Atlantic City this morning - ten of twelve casinos are up and running but the city is a ghost town ........ the expressway to here is back open and folks will return .

Certainly auto racing can wait...there are more important things to do..and it's the
end of the season anyway for most of the tracks in the Northeast.

I'll have to admit I wasn't too sure of the overall scope of this storm as I've been pretty
busy with work and family this week.

Just had a real chance to check the news...I'm amazed at the impact of "Sandy!"

My thoughts and prayers go out to the people affected by the storm...especially the
Metro NYC and NJ areas...those who lost family and loved ones, property,etc.

Those in the cold and dark...hang in there...HELP is on the way...but it may take
some time....I think they're doing the best they can!

It is very bad in some locations.....total destruction.

Many have been without power and still are.

My workplace was without power all week.....We were on generator power.....and thankfully we installed the eqiupment needed to keep us up and running a year or two ago.....

Many of my co-workers have been without power and they were out day and night trying to help our customers with generator problems....

Finding gas for our service trucks has been a big problem......

Yesterday 2 trucks went to Pa and came back with a lot of fuel.....so we should be ok for 2-3 days....

Long lines......very few stations open.....rationing by odd and even plate numbers....lots of confusion.....Police trying to keep order and tempers getting short....

Cold temps last night and colder tonight.......

Not fun for the people in the real bad areas......or those who lost everything....

I was extremely lucky.....no damage...never lost power...the winds here were plenty strong as there are big Maple trees down right up the street.....

The amount of money and work to rebuild the bad areas is going to be huge.......and take a long time......

Mother Nature.... Global Warming.....or Natural Cycles......I have no idea whats behind it. There are so many people living in vulnerable areas.....there is no way to defend yourself against a strom like this other than evacuate.....

Most wont like this but......So WHY didnt they evacuate?? In english thats get the hell out of there. They had lots of time to leave. Heads up warnings on the weather channels for almost a week. If it had come thru here in Fl. I would have been gone a long time before it hit. Ive been thru a few bad ones. Take some papers and personal possions and get the hell out. You cant fight mother nature especially high flood water and why do people still build on a beach. Your just asking for trouble then wonder why the Govt. and insurance is slow helping and wont pay off in a lot of cases.

some should have, others could not afford to do so. I agree with you, if was me I would have been long gone
