I had a scare in Round 2 of Joliet this year.Won the round,went to the scales,they said I was 5 pounds light.This was one of the first times that I ran at a minimum weight of 4075.

I pulled off of the scales and then pulled on again and was right on.

I didn't mean to be that close,but when you are pitted almost 2 miles away,it was easy to underestimate how much gas I used up on the last pass.

This was Not a heads up.

Why on earth the cars were not weighed in the final at Indy is beyond me.

In fact,I was reluctant to even respond to the issue.Did this REALLY happen,or just a story that is on the internet?

Because,as we all know,if it is on the internet,it has to be true.

With this logic, why would you ever weigh (or fuel check) unless they're just barely running the index? The absolute MOST important time to weigh is in a heads-up match, let alone in a final round, let alone at Indy.

Humans are imperfect and make mistakes. I've pulled weight out for Class before and came up light. It happens. People also drain fluids. Does everyone always remember to account for that weight?

There was a heads-up run at Darlington this weekend. One car was either at or 5-over min and the other was 20-25 over and lost by .00x. Weight could've made the difference.

Were both guys good? More than likely. We check because it is the rules, and things happen.

And then there is the matter of the fuel not being checked on the winner. Even if its been checked all week long, it is important to check it after a heads up run.

Does anyone ever change fuel for a heads up run?

Mike I think the clutch might of cause some of the problems, qualified at the number 79 in position, ran a best of 11:27, last run 11:56 from a previous 11:51 and with a great 0.06 light the clutch probably went away after the second and third gear. My two cents. Still both cars should have been weight checked, mistake have been known to happen in the excitement. Just imagine if both would have been light by a pound, can happened when you remove oil here and water there or even a bathroom break.lol CR

Technical question: Does icing fuel affect how it checks? Or is it taken into account with temp on the fuel check meter?

It's corrected for temperature. But I've seen them look at some people funny when it's 97 degrees out and your fuel is 55 degrees. I'd just say that it was in the air conditioned trailer, right by the vent

I understand time can be an issue at some of the big races but at least weigh and check fuel for the guys who had a heads up, we are not talking about a lot of cars. Most of us assume we are going to be checked but that's not the point.

Yes Toby.... I would have said the same for Herbie.... (I'm betting it was a complete accident that he came up light).... he knew he was getting scaled after that round (most likely

I will tell you how it actually happened...we beat Downing at 4 cars and immediately went to my trailer to pull some weight and literally 10 minutes after I ran I was back on the scales and was 10 over. I even joked with the scale guy if I should pull 5 more...he said, "I am not giving you advice on that" and we laughed. I contemplated back at the pits pulling 2.5-5 lbs but knew it wouldn't make a diff and elected not to. We did pull 1/2 qt of oil and 1/2 qt of gear oil and if that adds up to 10+ lbs my math skills are awful! We knew our opponent should outrun us and were just hoping for a miracle (holeshot, spin or breakage) I still don't know what happened to Mr. McGinley's car but it did not make a run that anyone expected and that was lucky on our part. I know I was legal and I don't care if anyone believes me because that is irrelevant . NHRA told me to go ahead for the parade and I followed what they told me after I asked 3 or 4 times....are you sure???? Yes I wished we would have weighed and fuel checked just to ease everyone's minds and I hope in the future when we have a Headsup race that they weigh and fuel check EVERYONE....EVERYTIME.

I had a blast at Indy as always and want to thank DJ Pires and family for the slick 72 Nova, Chick Ross and family for carrying the car, My wife Katie, Ryan Mangus, Steve Glenn, Francis Ross, my family for their support and all the calls, texts and emails meant alot! And anyone else that helped push the car from our pits to the burnout box!

PS- I was weighed in Class E1 when I finally got in the show and was legal...and oh ya...ran .07 better than the finals....
