Re: Let's have a discussion about setting records
So this conversation just morphed from Natl Record to running class elims at Divisional races, two separate issues....

Re: Let's have a discussion about setting records
I know NHRA wouldnt want to give up a entry fee to Nats for setting a record, but maybe a grade point for an entry into Nats for setting a record once. That way it helps a racer that cant make a far away divisional race just to get 1 more point to enter a Nat, now will be given that point for setting a record at a closer div race. Takes no money away from NHRA pockets.
I wish in time trials class cars could run each other for a show and good heads up racing, but I understand its tough to find like class cars in staging when making time trials. |

Re: Let's have a discussion about setting records
Having held 4 NHRA National records in four different cars, I feel I can attest to the value of accomplishing that feat.
Yes, we were able to attract sponsors. Yes, there were some psychological advantages in class eliminations. Yes, there were some hate letters ( some of those early records determined the class index for the Nation). Yes, it removed many suspicions about how the cars got so fast. An NHRA record teardown is,( or was), pretty damn thorough. Yes, it was easier to sell the cars and move on to the next project. However, for me, it was sharing with 2 or 3 other crew guys the exhilaration of accomplishing something that less than 1% ( a guess) of drag racers ever feel. Those records were the payback for the crew that I got as a winning driver...well sometimes a winning driver. Glen Tinsley...retired |

Re: Let's have a discussion about setting records
I wasn't aware that I was bitching, and I'm not sitting on my butt, I thrash on my car on a daily basis trying to make it faster and have been running Divisional races on an ongoing basis for the past several decades. I have set National Records on numerous occasions (and am not particularly happy when they go back to minimum after two years). I'd love to run class at Divisional races, just saying the National Record issue and running class at Divisionals are two separate issues and should be dealt with on separate threads. Incidentally, Division 6 has a year end CIC type race sponsored by the Gaynors based on points accumulated during the season.
