I think the 82 would make a better combo as well. My dad has an 83 street car with tthe factory carb and I am not sure how much performance is available through it.

The 85 had a roller cam where as the previous two years did not. If NHRA would allow this combo to run as an automatic, I would run my car in L/SA. I tried to run it with the factory CFI for a few years with no success. That is why I decided to put a crate motor in it.

I also run a carbed 85 Mustang in M&N/Stock. I too am suprised at this HP adjustment, Out of the 4 or 5 of us than run this combo, other than Summers convert, we are all struggling to go 1 sec. under (my best is .83 under) I thought than NHRA normally factored the engine AND the body in question. If so, shouldn`t only a convertable get hit? Like Eric said, 1/2 second of index for less than 250 lbs seems a bit generous.
As for the 83&84 Mustangs 5.0`s, the E5 heads the 85`s use are no better than the D8`s the 78-84 Mustangs use, the only difference is the bottom of the intake side of the casting is clearanced to allow the hyd. roller lifters to be removed without removing the heads. Same ports, valves, chamber volume. The pistons are also the same, although the 83 can have the piston sticking .013" above the deck, 85 is zero. The 84 & 85 use the same intake manifold, the 83 is the same other than the EGR passage. The 83-4 cam is a flat hydraulic, with less int. lift, but a bit more exh. lift. Other than the hyd. roller cam, the other "big news" for the 85 Mustang was the factory "tube headers", compared to the cast iron manifolds on the earlier 302`s, which is of no consequence on a Stocker anyways. As far as I know, the 82 HO 2 barrel, as well as the 83-84 4 barrel Mustang engines were all "stick only". If you wanted an automatic, you had to run the CFI set up.

It irritates me that there is no reason to put the combo in a position for hp. It's like a comp guy bombing the index on a redlight!!!! I have worked my *** off for the last five years to make my car fast. IT doesn't matter if it's 2 pounds or 200 pounds. It's the principal. It was most likely the convertible that did it. Heres the deal do the math. My car in M 13.15 index min 3040, his car in P 13.65 index 3280 min. 5 tenths for 240 pounds! Hello he doesn't have to make within 25 hp of me to hit the index. That is just irritating. There are plenty of F and G injected stick cars out there moving over. It just puts me at a little more of a disadvantage. That is why I am upset. If you own one of these combos and you did it, good job DONKEY if not stay out of it!! If you want to debate call me i'll be more than glad to talk!!!!

I would like to give you some information on my 85 Mustang Convertible

[QUOTE=Gary Summers;50637]I would like to give you some information on my 85 Mustang Convertible. First, I am not a donkey, I am a die hard Ford racer. I stopped racing in 1974 and my 65 Mustang Convertible held many records with NHRA and IHRA. I didn't race for 30 years and decided to race again about 5 years ago. I bought a 63 Ranchero and started racing full time in Super Street and Super Gas. I finished in third place in Division 3 in 2006 and sixth place in 2007 in Super Street. I always wanted to go back to Stock so I bought my 85 Mustang and built it myself from the ground up. It took a year to build it and my main goal was to be legal and safe, contrary to some beliefs. During the last 14 months, the car has been torn down seven times in Divisions 2,3 and 4 and passed technical inspection (by the way, no "juice" was found!!). Drag Racing is my hobby and I travel many miles each year to enjoy this hobby. I strive to have the fastest car just as many other racers. I build all of my motors and do all of my research and development. If my car sets National Records, then I have accomplished my goal.
To the person that believes I am no longer in P Stock, I will probably run P Stock in Gainesville at the Gatornationals, but sometimes I change my mind at the last minute. The weight for my car in P Stock is 3450 pounds, O Stock is 3245 pounds, and N Stock is 3140 pounds. The Mustang has ran in the 40's in P Stock, teens in O Stock and 90's in N Stock, all in bad air. And I will continue to try to do better, that's part of drag racing!!!
I thank Jim Gower for sticking up for me. He has been racing as long as me and knows that I play by the rules and that I LOVE to go fast!! I actually thought that all Ford lovers stuck together but I guess I was mistaken.
There was one guy that wanted to talk to me so here is my number: 270-392-0641.

Hey Gary, that was me thinking your combo would no longer be eligible for P since I read it as going from 15.04 to 14.83 on the classification guide. I was just thinking of my buddy's old Chevy he used to run in P and I thought it was 16.00 for P. I can't keep of Chevys let alone Fords so I could be all wet there. Wish I was going south this year too. Good luck. Jim.
