Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
In the late 60's I remember running against a T/S Volvo in Jersey. I believe it was called "Tom Thumb". I don't remember the driver/owner or anything else. It seems it wasn't around long.

Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
At Miami Dragway in the mid 60s there was a 3 cylinder 2 stroke late 50s or early 60s Saab that they let run jr stock. We finally nailed him running a Gran Prix optional 3 carbs in a class claiming the 1 carb HP. Do not ask how or why they let it run, I have no clue. You guys are going to have to work to top that for oddest combo

Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
The 1958-59 Sports version of the 93B had 48-50 hp in base version and 57 hp in super version. This model had triple carburetors. This is the combo the Saab ran, not much power but the lowest class at the time. He ran the 57 hp combo but claimed the 50 hp. My partner actually went down to his shop where he bragged about the A-holes he beat every week and explained how. My buddy introduced himself as one of the A-holes. The Saab was never seen again at the drags.

Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
How about Charlie Graf's GT/A Cavalier w/ 350.... one of, if not the 1st front wheel drive conversion cars when rules first allowed it in the late 80's.
In the early 90's (maybe 1991) before I got into SS..... we went to the points meet and Englishtown (it used to be in May) to watch and that was the 1st time I saw a FWD conversion. I had always been a fan of the big block GT/A cars.... like the Monte Carlos of Frank Brenneiser and Hoffman, and the GT/A Camaro's of Jim Bodreau, Don Ciccarone, & Sherwood Allen, Colbert (and I'm sure others I cant recall everyone right now). And I used to like to watch them go at it, But that 1st time I saw that car, it was sitting on a trailer and the view was from the rear....... The rear was so narrow, and the tires so big..... I just remember thinking and commenting that it it looked like a "steam-roller".... and it ran really good too! I have a VHS video from that day, I wish I could post it.... a lot of those guys (named above) are on the tape. If I remember correctly.... the GTA cars were running in the mid 9.70's. Maybe someone could post of pic of that Cavalier |
Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
Angelo,
Yes, Charlie's Cavalier was one of the first GT cars built. Jimmy Morgan of course did most of the driving. Jimmy has moved to SC. The Cavalier is "out there" somewhere. Charlie lives very close to me, and since I have a piece of business to visit with him about in the next couple of weeks anyway, I will ask if he has shots of the Cavalier. Bill Rolik SS 1514 |

Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
That video was from 1982 when they still ran a Stock/SS combo Eliminator at LV on a weekly basis.Car was sold by Ed to someone in Ohio at the end of the 1983 season after winning the V/SA class wally at the Summernationals in E-town that year. Ed defeated some guy who towed his car all the way from Cal. to run class at the Summernats. Our Nova was a total resto with all new chrome, upholstery, etc. She was a beauty, but never ran its full potential. If only I knew Billy back then !!

Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
I remember changing a transmission in a Corvair when I was probably 16-17. We did it in a barn! That was one of the most miserable jobs I had to do in my life. As few of them as there are now, they are neat cars, today. As long as I don't have to work on it.

Bruce Sizemore ran a Pinto with a bored out 300, he cut up sets of boss 302 heads and had them furnace brazed together. Can't remember the year but I do remember that he ran so fast that he could have qualified for pro stock at least 4 times that year. I ran an MP '65 Valiant with a slant six and a 4 speed that year. |

Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
Any one remember the Corvair that ran IHRA super stock in the 80's? IHRA had a class K,L,and M for the "non traditional" V8 cars and it fit in one of them. I remember seeing it run against some "faster" cars and get some BIG spots. If memory serves me, it had two Holly 2bbls. on it and ran in the production class. It was brown and has some SHORT rear tires on it. I heard the story that it got tore down once and the tech guys were scratching their heads trying to figure out what they were looking at lol! I think the car was from Michigan. Don Jackson

Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
Back in the Sanair days i really liked Frank and Linda Mazi's blown Opel and Terry Hoards screaming "ROTARY" Mazda. Then it was any small cube SBC that ran Modified, Comp, Gas or Altered that had to be "ROWED" down the track. --- and i couldn't possibly forget the cold beer and hot chicks, but thats for another thread --- LOL

I remember a guy running in the AHRA in MP with a 1950 Stude coupe with a Pontiac Sprint OHC six 4bbl motor and a Corvette 4 speed and a '56 olds rear.
Don't remember the times but it was quick and held track records all over Texas....he drove it on the street also. Jim |
Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
Well, this wasn't a Stocker, but this was the weirdest thing I ever saw: Hot Rod magazine, way back, had an article about a '40 or ';41 Willys coupe that had a supecharged V8 under the hood that was force-fed pressurized air from a GMC blower that was driven by a 4-cylinder industrial engine of some kind. The blower and the auxialliary engine were both in the TRUNK!!!
It was called "Blown by Proxy".... lol! Strange, indeed... |

LOL. Not that fast. Been -.97 under with it (14.93 on a 15.90). Actually, I did leave first on Bucky by about a hundreth and a half. Meaning, against his car, I led the race for the first, oh, six inches or so, maybe. |
Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
In the '70's there was a guy racing in the AHRA that was running a four cylinder ChevyII...but it wasn't the standard 4cyl.
It was a 283 cut in half with a hand made manifold with a Carter backed by a 4 speed with a '58 Olds rear. It sounded really strange and ran well. Wish I had paid more attention to the engineering. Jim |
Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
There was a company named "SESCO" that sawed 283's in half, making an inline 4 for midget racers.
They were pretty popular in Midget racing back in the '80s. The bore-center spacing on a Chevy II four cylinder is 4.40", just like a 265-400 small block. A SBC cylinder head can be "installed" on one by re-drilling the hold-down bolt holes, and adding some material to the outside of the block at the top, so the bottom row of hold-down head bolts have something to get hold of. Instant cross-flow head.... My partner, Harry Sparks (we had a Stocker that we share-cropped) and I were building a bug-eyed Sprite "gasser" with just such an engine in 1980. Had the frame and front-end built, a 'glass 1-piece front cap, a narrowed Chevy rear end, and a Brodix head for it, but, I moved away. He never finished the car, but I think it would have done some damage in the VW class. He still has it, but rules have obsoleted the combination, now. AA/Different.... |
Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
I was reminded this evening to mention a 1960 Pontiac station wagon owned and raced by a Paul Longnecker I think out of Ohio. He latter raced Top fuel and prior to that he raced in Pro Stock during the 1970 year in a Camaro. The old Pontiac wagon had a 288 or 292 small block Chevy with fuel injection sticking out of the hood like the old altered wheel base Mopars had. It rand E/G or F/G and weighed about 4400 lbs. It had a Mopar A833 4- speed trans and a 6.17 geared Dana 60 rear that lasted only about 13 to 14 runs before needing replacement (ouch). It was equiped with the factory 8 lug wheels and pulled wheel stands approx 2-3 feet high on each pass. At least it was different.

Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
The E/G late 40s early 50s Packard that looked like an upside down bathtub with the 292 Chevy in it that left at 10 grand was impressive too. The name was Koeffel or something close to that

Dave Koffel became a Mopar factory guy in the '60s and still is active, as far as I can tell, within the Mopar community. This is one of his websites: http://www.b1heads.com/
But, his "Flintstone Flyer" SBC-powered Packard, and later, Studebaker Lark Gas Coupes were originally the cars responsible for his notoriety. The Mopars came later. |
