Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
Ask and ye shall recieve....
Race weight ? Well thats yet to be determined. AA or A for Pomona? Hell first I need a running car :) The CAR weight right now with a full load goes under 2990 DRY......With fluids Id say 3050-3060, we have a 3qt accumulator and extra trans vols....so... I can drop another 50 easy but I need to be back at my shop so that won happen. I can also move up 200 lbs legally (putting items back on that were replaced with lightweight counterparts. So race weight ? Car weight after Gainesville when I have her home for a few days, under 3000 Hate to say it again (its on the blog :) as well as all the items the went poof or were replaced (most back in Id say mid - late Nov) Car got a name...I like it , its a play on Meglomaniac.... On the car wrap under it the definition has been adjusted to " 1. A psychopathological condition in which delusional fantasies of speed, power, or performance omnipotence predominate. 2. An obsession with grandiose or extravagant race cars and fuel injection systems. " See we really dont need others to poke fun at us were quite capable on our own :) Cheers Chris Quote:

Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
You'll get there....keep swinging and thanks for the weight info...didn't think the cars would end up that light....BTW, I did finally go to your blog site....VERY informative. WJ

Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
If running 8.99 and talking about 8.99 took the same effort you'd be there already for sure. However, something called reality gets in the way once you launch the car and get your time slip that says 10.xx :D
Damn reality............ it was so much easier on the internet. http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/food/popcorn440.jpg |
Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
Bo Knows!!! Bo, we got our Top Stock, excuse our Super Stock, excuse me our Stock motor ready for the dyno. Trusty old 360 Wedge. You remember that motor. I fugure abouty 9.99 in I/SA. I guess I shouldn't smoke that stuff anymore.
|
Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
If your going to go 8.99 you better do it first run, cause when you go 9.350 the horsepower fairy gives you 13 HP and then you have to carry another 97 lbs in AA/Sa or run 974 in A/sa and get the same gift only its 104 Lbs. So therfore the fastter you go the fatter the will make yor weight box.
|
Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
I think you misunderstood, I said the car is capable I believe within the year, Irv makes good points about weight and it need to be gapped after 9.350 if thats our goal, it isnt. Other things are our goal.
I never even in my sleep deprived road moods thought it was , or even close to the same effort....can you point me to that post ? Mike Roth said "You have no idea what it actually takes" or something to the similar. The truth is I know EXACTLY what it takes, and unlike others who say things like "thats not worth it" or , "You wont see much power difference" I will DO all those things even for 1/10th a HP, 10 of those "not worth it" things are worth 1 hp 100 of them are 10 hp and so on, if I can pull an actual 65 hp out of 326cc's, confirmed on gas, verified and repeated, then appraently that approach works. I would contend I do know exactly what it takes and I have an obsessive enough personaliy on the mechanical side to make it happen given 3 things 1)I have the time to devote to it (at current no problem) 2)I have the funds to complete the project (if I have to Im going to sell MY 72 Challenger thats getting the twin turbo hemi and 6 speed, so need be I will have funds, even if the old man decided he dosent want to put anymore of his $ in this project. Id rather enjoy the car, but Ill enjoy this more also my 49 plymouth and a couple of other motors will go up for sale if need be) I was also told I couldnt make a Rollieflex mechanical shutter operate at 1/2000th of a second but I did, took me 6 months 5 hrs a day, but I did it (Im wearing my Rollei Shirt now :) 3) I still have an interest and the Challenge is still there. Being the first to run 8.99 in a NA stocker is a nice "Pinnacle" but truth is if somone else does it Ill probably get bored and look to something else. So, No way do I think its the same effort. You are 100% right, not even close, its rather the hard road, but that Im willing to do. If NOTHING else, if Only the Challenger build itself on #24 , there should be no doubt Im willing to commit 16 hrs a day 7 days a week for 3 months to achieve a goal, in this case Pomona. This all for something I think is POSSIBLE With this motor I expect to see only a hair under 10, no faster than Doug Duell is running, but predictions are moot, from what I heard tonight with the valve train the way its setup on our car 9k is going to be doable from Pomona-Gainesville. Faster times, yes but thats after we get it dialed in setup wise. The second motor after gainesville with the 5.7 and every trick thrown at it and ME doing the motor sten to stern, not someone eles (the bottom of our mill is the 6.1 is still Stantons build and its way too tight for my comfort) That Combo at max overbore with all the "tricks" thrown at it I expect to see 9.5 with eventually, by say late July early August. The up and downstroke 0 clearance teflon crank scrapers its getting after Gainesville, 9.5 Possibly faster (BUT it actually as an ACTUAL CR that .4 higher than the 6.1 (ignore the blueprint theyre wrong) But at 12.7/1 actual which I can get on the 5.7 (5.9 at max overbore)Thats also with the Phase II tranny which is really a 904 protrans, with some exotics Im having made , all alloy internals and custom shafts. That tranny SHOULD be ready by Mid-Late April. No secrets Ill be happy to tell anyone absolutley everyting I am going to do to the motor, most people reaction is its "overkill" but MOST of it is LABOR, That is something I have in abundance. The third motor the 6.1 at max overbore (383 ci) Darton wetsleeved block, Ive got someone with 1 ready to roll sitting on it for me when IM ready (he had 8 done at once to save a few $) with all we learned about setup and Trans, probably a full Protrans for windage in the trans. With all we learned on cam and converters as well as trans from Phase 1 and 2.That motor will not get simple friction and ceramics, but rather all DLC where it makes sense, Ive got a buddy at Lockheed that can do them for us....but turnaround time as he has to run them when theyre doing prototype work and are setup for it. Today I finished ordering (less pistons and cam) everything needed for our 5.7 built, then when the pistons are available the whole lot will go to treatments, Cryo, and Ill probably do most all the coatings myself on this one. Reality is fine, Ill take it anyday, like I said I expect a hair under IF we get enough testing by Pomona, By Pheonix I am HOPING for 9.8 and Gainesville 9.75 or a tad lower, IF the bottom end holds together, someone else blew theirs to itty bitty pieces on the 7th pass or so, from whe he told me it was "Catastrophic" his new motor is a CRUSHER. My concern is that the Chassis and Trans/Diff combos will be capable of allowing us to , if there is a weak link in the POSSIBLITY that the car can do 8.99 , thats where it lies with the stock eliminator cars. 8.99 isnt that flipping fast, Ive built cars much faster, granted they were Chassis cars, but well like I said EVERYTHING , everyhthing EXCEPT the enigine is a question, and HOW to time it right for Weight/Hp like Irv mentioned, BUT there are a few ways around that to a degree as well depending on HOW its done, and how other cars have afffected the ratings. Not even CLOSE to the same country in Terms of effort, MUCH MUCH MUCH Harder than most people are willing to commit, we however ARE willing to take our usual approach, "It takes what it takes" Yhe build out for Pomona and still making it (when we are there) will show that we are both willing and capable. As well as our weight, the LIGHTEST DP car to date to my knowledge, and to be lighter. Cheers Chris Quote:

I just don't think you are going to be able to measure, coat, treat and degree in 250-300 extra horsepower. :) Not in legal stock eliminator trim at least. |
Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
Yuppers I agree Irv....thats the problem with doing the 8.99 is the "LEAP" it will take after others (like you :D have added to the 6.1 combo, were going to be 5.7 for a while.
If you "lay low" and Couglin, and everyone else with the 6.1 "lays low" until late in the year when were on our Phase III motor...think you could do that for us ? lol....yeah right, Im gonna let you butt heads with Coughlin and Force and whoever else shows up in AA Ive heard a few more that will be all A type personalities not light to be the slow ones in AA......I figure A is (in terms of speed) our best shot at Pomona, given the fact we hope the car will be running right :) So , seriously, and Im not talking within the NHRA factors, do you believe the car is capable of an 8.99 motor and suspension wise, with all the RD in say 9 months ??? If not , what and why not ? I know youve got a wicked fast piece and if anyone knows what these cars are REALLY capable of its you at this moment from a complete package standpoint ? You can PM me and I wont reveal what your answer is, I am truly curious of your thougths on it. Cheers Chris Quote:

Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
Yes I do,,,,,,sort of...... not that they have missed (and the factor of 1/10th of a horse was relative to my usual of sub 350cc engines) here 1/10th is all relative but really equates in size, and friction differential to about 1-2 hp per item.
Not that they have missed it, but they dont see benefit in it. There are some items like slicing lifter bores I dont know if they are legal, but all those items have workarounds I do know are legal, If I can reduce 60-70% of my valvtrain friction thats a good start, and pretty easy on this motor. Phase II will have all those items. I dont think nearly anyone has "Missed" items like that, undercutting valve guides for example, you loose reliablity and its labor intensive, on an 8 it can be good for up to 8-10, especially at high RPM...... Anyone is who is aware of these items can do it, WILL they do it is another question entirley. I think most people know of these items but MOST arent willing to commit the resources to 1-2 hp. We will (to my knowlede be the first running crank scrapers on these motors for Stock Eliminator) whats that worth ? about 2 hp ? maybe a hair more ? The coatings and treatments, really most of those arent for HP, they are to try to gap some of the reliablity problems that will be introcuced throwing in "the kitchen sink" Running a motor on the verge of desctruction is the best way in my experience to pull power. How many others are willing to turn their engine into a pile of metal shavings ? But I am....so is the old man.... Maybe this isnt a "Stock Eliminator" approch to things, i dont know....the only thing I do know is how Ive always done things, so this is a comfort zone and Im aware of the expectations from a point of having to do-redo things to maintain a running package at all times. Like myself and others have pointed out, Were new to stock eliminator, so maybe these things are best left to another class (id be running a FED this year a choice) but I am playing the cards I was dealt , and the DP project are those cards. If we do things different that other "Stockers" no suprise, but the processes and procedures work and have worked for us, if they need altered we can alter them. I go through 3 checklists on every item, 1 the inital checklist, validated by me, the second checklist a verification of someone elses hands and eyes, also bringing and correcting other items, the third pass by me again. I have a clipboard, and ask my dad, hes the MASTER of Preflight checklists. Is that "Normal" for stock eliminator I have ABSOLUTLEY NO, 0 idea but were good with it, and it works......so well stick with it.... I am 100% ok with sacrificing reliablity for performance. IF I go into it with full knowledge of the payoff and consequences. My dad, when given the options will as well ALWAYS take the one that makes us fastest, IF he has an accurate expectation in terms of reliablity were loosing. If I have to tear down and inspect inbetween every nat, I will do that, it "takes what it takes" simple....to me I guess....and the part I enjoy :) No I dont think most people miss the things, I will bet the opposite, that nearly every builder who hasnt implemented these things did so for a reason, they saw bad ink on the balance sheet from reliabilty to performance potential, they made what choice they made for reasons that suit them. I HAVE built knowingly slow cars and bikes IF the payoff was reliability, but I did so knowingly and with purpose. I think they KNOWINGLY choose not to do these items for a plethora of good reasons that fit their scenario, budget, goals and knowledge. Cheers Chris Quote:

Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
I've been reading all this nonsense from the beginning and this will be my only post on this.
All this stuff that drooze thought of that is going to put this car in the "8's," wouldn't someone else, who actually has drag racing experience, have already thought of and tried these things? |
Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
Apparently you to misunderstand.
I said I think it is POSSIBLE, and I think it will happen. We are NOT trying to put our car in the 8's BUT The road for us is the exact same for the destination. Think of it this way, we have 3 phases planned 1 is done and will be testing and wrung out through Gaiensville, Phase 2 through early Aug and Phase 3 from then till early next season. We want to keep the car in a competitive upward reach. Not build it run be done. We are not shooting for 8's that is NOWHERE on our Roadmap. BUT The path to get there is the same EXACT path as it is to stay competitive and outfront over the long haul (a season) So......if the opportunity or "off ramp" should show itself within that time maybe a detour is in order. Now do you understand what I am saying ? I want the car to do it, and by saying we plan for it, were not planning for the 8's were planning to keep the car ahead. In as much as "who actually has drag racing experience" we do have that, we have more in other areas, but stock eliminator is new....big difference to NO drag experience. But to me, thats all the more reason to ignore other pundits, Thinking "well if other havent done it I cant" is a certain recipie for utter failure "Wether you think you can or not youre right" "The bigges deterent to progress is .... oh hell I cant remeber.....Basically common knowledge or ASSUMING someone else knows something you dont is also a recipie for failure 100% I ASSUMED that when these engines were put together that they were put together RIGHT, and that the cam position in was correct and that there was no way Stanton missed something like this, and that I, ME, I must be missing something, that it had to be right and I was not understanding the setup. I was 100% Wrong, the cam was in wrong, I , my gut was right......so in as much as people with "actual drag experience" well thats 1 item, 2 is is it harder to pull 65 hp out of a 326cc engine or 750 out of a 383 inch engine ? The details on a smaller engine are that much more critical, I also can work on watches and camera shutters in my sleep, but that happens from living in the "Watch Room" with a grandfather who was a wathcmaker, not a repairman, a watch MAKER, who taught me well.....so YES I think we know things others dont in engines......by June well see....I could be 100% wrong, and that will be 100% OK too..... I mean how many people ever , ever in their lifetime who love cars get an opporunity to build (less cage and such) a Drag Pak car themselves, with their own hands 100% Paint, wiring, plumbing etc......ever.....Making EVERY decision on EVERY part that goes in with no contratints, noone to answer to, no "client" no wife.....just build it the way you feel it should be built. On a car, of this importance (historically the DP cars I mean) I will NEVER see an opportunity like this again , of that I am pretty certain. So Im here to enjoy the Journey, being able to do it with the old man, the things we used to do before he got sick.....I mean really ? For US the Journey has been the reward the rest is gravy For the other 100 DP Owners/ Builders.....Im sure they will see it the same, to be fortunate to even participate has been a privlage and worth it all in itself. Cheers Chris KEEP NEW Names Coming...Zeeeee List is getting stale ! Quote:

Lol....I dont think its capable now, I think it has the potential to be. 10 even would be GREAT for a first outing with this motor.
I have GOT TO HAVE that Patch....thats sweeeeeetttt....dont like the green, but I think with a #24 on it, one on the old mans shirt one on mine that would be great. Thanks, now I got to go find someone who custom stitches patches before Pomona....just what I needed something else to add to my list. Better be nice, you havent heard much about "Morroco Mole" latley, there is a reason for that, after suffering a serious frontal lobe injury from attempting , quite accidently to open the "Squirrel Mobile" briefcase in an elevator injuring several innocent bystandards.....1 of the also brain injured animals , (now a meat eating rabbit) had decided to go off and become villans, "Morroco" was caught attempting to tunnel under the White House lawn and fill the sprinkler system with JP1.....he is currently undergoing rehabilitation at an "undisclosed" location and it appears his progress is slower than wed like, but he has mentioned he would like to contribute to the efforts of DP #24, I just have real concerns about allowing him access to racing fuels and nitromethane.......He says hes Ok...but well Im not quite sure :) Cheers Chris |

Come on now. No DP is going in the 8's in Stock. If you crack into the 9's you did good. The categorized to make a mockery of Stock mustangs are capable but even there odds are slim as they will need to haul from the get go with a -1.60 before getting horsepower.

Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
Let take Irv Johns as an example, and what is KNOWN to the General Public about his car and how it has run in a very short time.
I use Irv because he is fast. And he has a superior car setup and he know his stuffz period He ran 9.74 fat.....I think by about the 14th or so pass on the motors....he can correct me if Im wrong, we talked about #s of runs under certain motors....so I could be wrong) Cracking into the 9's .... easier than you might think with one of these. So......a car the 14th pass out there, a well done car granted rann 9.74 fat AT a sanctioned event. You dont think hell be seein 9.4 by the mid year ? If he isnt I will be wholly dissapointed....BUT hell need a reason....If , and I say IF someone pushes him there I have no doubt he will....I dont think hes willing to be slower than anyone. I like that, actually I love that, put 3 or 4 Atype personalities in the mix of these cars.....9.4 will EASILY happen before you can blink.......easily , I have a real good idea 9.4+ is already possible from a couple of cars.....and this from other people who are familar with the cars, NOT My "uneducated lack of experince dosent know squat about anything" opinion.....but from others.....I got a call asking what we were planning to do for certain races from an "agent" of another team.....why ? He can go faster, and will if we run hot.....why ? Because he can and wont be 1 upped , something I understand completley and respect....its racing its fun, its about who can DO what, not just talk on forums about it......talking is fine, but in the time I have been talking here Ive also been working and in that time have taken a raw chassis to running car.....so...next steps running the hell out of it. I wish heda just asked me himself, I would have told him straight up what our plan was, but he dosent know me that well to know that what I would have told him is/is not accurate, weve only chatted briefly a few times.....I think the reason for going through the other person was he trusts them, and know we trust them, he knew I would give the other person the straight up, and he could get that from them......so be it......were "ducking" at Pomona....if we make it without blowing the engine to little shards in our testing en-route. You like Irv are 100% correct the issue will be in how or when, / IF it can be done, it will need to be done in such a way it has been done, tested and wrung out "off sanction" so it could be "Sprung" back into the fray...done outside the auspices of normal increases....a REAL "Pak Attack" as it were.....(I do like that name for Warfords car....good choice).... Well be running the 5.7 combo for a good while, I think there is more potential in it because of factors, what happens between now an then with the 6.1 factors....who knows....noone does.... The car I believe is Physically capable within the rules of running to 8.99 with a bit of time and figuring out like I said up to a year. Thats with engine , trans and rear, car all NHRA spec......Now.....with factors it is a different game....and since noone know where these will be by the time the car is physically capable , thats the big question. 2 different issues.....1 strictly mechanical based on rules. 2 strictly legislative on factors. #1 I think can be done, #2 .... HellI have more Idea pissing into the wind off the empire state building the balance of males / females that the spray will hit at the bottom than how/where/when factors on these 6.1 combos will be adjusted, EXCEPT what I plan to do to the 6.1 factors if Im able. Thats why I do plan, it takes something outside of my control and puts it directly into my influence, taking that control from others is key for a good season plan to succeed and I will "force" a hand at every single turn given the option. I do in poker and this is no different. This is going to be my last post on this here....I allowed myself to be "off coursed" and am going to send the admins a message about moving this into a seperate thread. I started this thread FOR 1 REASON , to List DP Owner who WISH to be listed....nothing else....I, ME, allowed myself to be off tracked for several reasons, lack of sleep I am going to blame as 1, but just because I made the mistake dosent mean I cant be the one to correct it..... Soooooooooooooooo No more posts from me in THIS thread about this.. This thread is to list DP owners, simple , ENTIRLEY my fault for off tracking and allowing myself to be off tracked here in this thread. Cheers........ Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
7 days and 21 hours till Pomona......as per the NHRA website right now....
You get maybe 3 runs and then line up. You could quite easily not run anyone heads-up for numerous races......or you could have a headsup right out of the box.......Since the odds are that you will not have any headsup runs get some fresh shoe polish for your driver..... If you are lucky enough to run somone flat out you can show off your handywork and let your ET slip do the talking for a change.... One can only hope Mustangs and Challengers have to race each other constantly for a number of races. No stocker should be capable of running the numbers your talking about unless NEW weight breaks were established due to the rediculous HP these cars must be capable of making.......Mustangs running low 9's and Challengers running 9.7's tells anyone paying attention that something is way wrong with the HP ratings as they stand....... It took years and years for a BB Camaro to be capable of running into the 9's in Stock. No way a new car is factored right if it does it right out of the box......the LT-1 Pontiacs come to mind for a comparison....... Best thing that could happen is new classes that would accomodate these new cars and add a Camaro to the mix.......AAA/SA looks to confusing. Make it A at the top and fix it at the bottom. |
Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
Agreed 100%......nothing like increasing the long term value of the cars like the SS/AH car than putting them in their own playground where only they can play.
A real kick in the head would be if the Mustangs made it and the Challengers didnt......that, that would suck. Quote:

Watching a New Blown Mustang or DP Challenger run and hide from a 40+ year old Muscle car is not my idea of fair competetion. All it shows is that the HP ratings are bogus..... |
Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
Agreed......
Its not like Stock Elim is heads up anyway......BUT , PERHAPS , if the cars are moved into their own class it would/could be....or something of the like. Youre right I will have NO joy in beating 40 yr old iron if its another A or AA car in a heads up run, Im sure they will...and there are some that will be able to that have "laid low" I think.... UNLESS its a driver win. Then, well....the car is a moot point. A seperate question unrelated, what is a good .4 pro tree RT ? I mean good/fair average ? (unrelated curiousity) ? Like as in what would "acceptable" consistency be for that to be competitive ? Im too tired to go get my "Stats" and well.....since I keep forgetting to mail Joe Jackson the check on my desk......I have decided not to allow myself to read them until its mailed :D Quote:
|
Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
A good RT on any tree is one that wins the round.....no matter what it is.......but if you are not capable of going .00 then your not competitive at most races.......Last time I won a S/C Lucas oil race I went .007-.002 and .013 first 3 rounds and they were all close......
I lost a race with a .010 Rt and ran dead on with a 3 in S/C...it was a .0006 MOV.........to the other lane........ All the S/ classes are "killer"...... I was not suggesting that you have to run heads up with these new cars. Just pointing out that they are improperly factored HP wise and they need to move up. Since there are no more classes up, they need to create them.....and move these cars up where they belong.... |
Re: Challenger Drag Pak Owners
Quote:
Off topic curiosity, I think the VRT on the car was pretty slow, I wonder why some of the higher classes are slower in avg RT its certainly not the lack of quality drivers, so its either intentional setup or vrt. I had not driven against a .4 pro tree and all my slips (8, less 1 were consistent) the old mans were too , but well.... a bit faster as always...some parents bitch about their kids playing video games, from the 70's up I bitched about my dad playing them :) Hes still the "Pinball Wizard" sick on a set of flippers.....lol.....I think thats where my son mr .008, I still cant figure out how a kid hits .008 so often, it has to be the setup, well see this year....but last year "another 008" was the announcer call when he ran... as we call him gets it....It must have skipped a generation ... Hey Drooze, DP #40 is slooooowly coming along. As you know, we work on the car in our spare time. In fact, I gave it less than an hour today and that was all spent on R&D in the valve train. Don is staying late tonite working on the rear end. I did find out that Manley submitted a connecting rod to NHRA and they also told me they don't make a Beehive that will survive the rpm's. You knew that, I knew that, I'm just throwing it out there to save someone from an uneccessary phone call.
