This photo is only a couple of years old, but, it is the same car as raced at Cornhusker Raceway Park......... The "Don's" on the rear quarter panel was for Don Nicholich (SP) that had a machine shop in South Omaha....I have no idea if he is still alive, and would like to know. If anyone knows about Don, please let me know.

Re: Cornhusker Raceway Park

I find this thread short of pictures and comments about the folks that raced at CRP. I will throw out a few names.....John Wilson (and his dad), Garber and Devney, Stan White, Denny Fitch, Gary Vincent, Charlie Jacobs, Gene Bichelmier, Whitey Knudsen and his partner Dick Meirhenry, Rich Mlnarik, Mike Daurety, Fred Anderson, Eddie Rezac, Mike Daly, Patrick Brothers, Ryan Brothers, Charlie Puhls, Paul Jochim, Herman Chapman, to name a few.....I know some are watching from above now......

Here is my question.....how many of the "regulars" at Cornhusker Raceway Park still race competitively at NHRA events.....here are the ones I know: Gene Bichelmier, Dick Meirhenry, and me......any others?

How could I forget the 1957 "Rocket Ship".....that car is wicked fast. I am sure I have missed others.

Re: Cornhusker Raceway Park

Speaking of "Rocket Ships"....I don't remember Randall Klein racing there, but he probably did. If I missed him, I am sorry.

One of my best memories was telling John Wilson that Richard Charbenau (SP) reset the record...(when we were running off records)....John was a quiet kind of guy....John had his Black Max Wedge 4 speed car and went out and lowered the record a little just to keep things in order...LOL

I see that the Topeka LODR is August 23-24 (Friday - Saturday),,,,,Then Indy, then Earlville LODR September 6. For those of us that need to travel a distance, there is a possibility of getting a number of races in with one trip, plus see some old friends (I'm old, so if they are my friends....they are old too...LOL) We will have to see how things go.

John Preston's Wunderbug I/G Karmen Ghia won Modified at the last race at Cornhusker in 73. I believe Jim Grove won it in 72 as well as the division title in 73.

In my notes the photo is from the 7/27/73 National Dragster Pg36. Are you sure about Preston winning the 73 race? Preston did win the World Championship that year with his win at the World Finals(I think or another VW machine).

Didn't Preston win the WCS at MN Dragway that was moved because Cornhusker was closing?Cornhusker was going to have two that year. I think Preston then was Div 5 pts leader and the Groves went to a Div 4 race and made the finals or semi's and won the Division.

Hey I was only 6 years old at the time so you may know more about all that.

We are getting closer to the "Geezer Race"............Is it still going to happen? Any ideas as to who will be there? Is this really a race or is this an opportunity to get together and drink beer (that's not all bad).... I am 1,400 miles away and would like to go....my dilemma is: do I take the Dart.....do I take the Roadrunner that I used to race at Cornhusker...(trailer is not big enough for both)...........or do I take nothing and just drink beer and bench race with my old friends....

Advise is welcomed..

You can call Jim Howe at 402-306-5015 and he can advise as to who will be there.
It is on the schedule.
In addition to the geezer races, there will be a true box and no box gambler if you want to play for real.

My boss is going to show his car, a 1967 SS 350 Camaro that was built into a drag car in 1969 and raced at Cornhusker, Scribner , Thunder Valley and has even made a few trips down the track at Mid America Motorplex for Friday night street races. His car is nicknamed Capn Crunch's Super Camaro. Not sure if he plans to race as he has a few more things he needs to do before its race ready

Everytime I run across a photo of a car that has raced at Cornhusker I try and add it where it belongs, on this forum. If anyone has photos of the track, cars that have raced and people that have driven or had something to do with midwest drag racing in the late 60s early 70s I invite you to add your photos here, that way all of can enjoy them

My boss Steve Britten raced his 67 Camaro, nicknamed Capn Crunch Super Camaro. Alot of the old school racers remembered the car from back in the day. Tom Grosso even got on the loud speaker when my boss brought the car into the staging lanes, and announced the return of a peice of midwest racing history. It was very cool.
