Rich, let me tell you why we are loyal to Bob

4 years ago, Sunday June 14th, Rick Constable asked me to go to Numidia with him on a Sunday for Summit points race. I hadn't been to Numidia since the early 90's and my last time there/first time there I won "Heavy" Eliminator. Later that morning Rick and I are in the lanes and Bob came over and thank us for coming. Much to my surprise, Bob, knew my name, knew I had sold my Chevelle and knew I had bought the Firebird. I was surprised because frankly Bob and I never really talked back in the day when he raced at Island. Maybe a hello on occasion because he pitted across from us. Rick won that day and so did my son.

http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps5b788aee.jpg

http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/o...dia6-14-09.jpg

The point is Bob is a racer as well business man and truly appreciative of his racers/customers and from my observations, he treats everyone that comes in the gate like family. I know he has me and my son, quite the opposite of what I, he and many others experienced at island over a great many years.

Thank you again Bob and thank you Rick. Miss you buddy.

Ed, who didnt know you? You were the friggin big mouth that was shattering the records for getting thrown off every drag racing message board in the country. Everyone knew who you were...lol.

Anyone that has never been to Numidia should try. Its a great experience. I would of never come back to the sport if it wasnt there. Like Bobby said, stop and introduce yourself to him, you will be happy you did. I have never met anyone so willing to help out people. The big dude is one of the best people you will ever meet. Glad to call him a friend. Just wish I could of won a round or 2 when I drove for him...lmao.

Re: ISLAND DRAG-WAY..Hackettstown NJ-Good news.

Johnny, "big mouth" no, not afraid to speak the truth YES and as a weekly customer at island for 20 years I will state the truth and the facts!

EVERYTHING that I, Bob, Rich Biebel, karecovery, Frankie Cierelli have stated here and others have stated elsewhere on the web is the truth! Island's problems are their own doing that they worked hard at for a long time. NOTHING has/will change there and those that believe otherwise are drowning themselves in koolaid! No surprise some of the biggest cheerleaders on the net aren't racers haven't been there in decades!

Re: ISLAND DRAG-WAY..Hackettstown NJ-Good news.

Everybody knows who Ed is, where ever you race or frequent on a message board. He is definetly not under the radar. He comes through the front door.

Why don't we just open a Numidia appreication thread. Im sure there are a few already, and there should be. It appears to be the new Atco of Division one, that place was the hottest place for class or bracket racing. I guess its not so hot now. The only thing wrong with it besides the long drive from NJ, it is usually pretty slow there, so not a good place to pump the go fast ego.
Happy 4th everybody

Why waste anymore server space talking about the same owner/management that ran their customers off for decades, now begging for handouts that won't be reopened for long.

Why not give the young gal a chance?

Re: ISLAND DRAG-WAY..Hackettstown NJ-Good news.

this has nothing to do with the young gal except that she/they ain't starting over on the right foot lying about being under new management.

It is what it is, Kathy Demarky's track with her daughter out there trying to be the face of island.

Besides, what do you care, you are another that didn't race there.

Re: ISLAND DRAG-WAY..Hackettstown NJ-Good news.

I would be very happy if they succeed.

Never really had any big problems dealing with anyone there and for the most part was always treated well.....

Don't know Melissa at all really.... but Kathy and her parents were nice to me.....Yes things went down hill over the years but I surely can see how this could happen......

Mrs. K was a tough lady but she always had an easy side and anytime there was a beef.....she gave you that little smerk and usually said OK and calmed down........to me anyway....

One day we rented the track to test some cars.....or I should say George Cable rented the track......I was helping him and someone else who I had installed a new engine in his car........I worked like a dog in the hot sun...I .had to change a converter and was a mess by early afternoon. The guy I installed the engine for tried to use his previous converter and there was no way the car would go down the track it was so loose. I sent him to go get one that was brand new at George Cables shop and installed it.....It worked fine....

I made the last run in the car George had bought......Traction was pretty poor......Went 10.0 at 142 mph.....Did a real nice slide thru first gear....and should have run well in the 9's.....

I Went in to see Kate to get a Tech card for the nights racing.....She gave me one for free.......At the end of the night I won Super Pro.....and when I went in to get paid Kate said....".How did you do that?"......I said same way as always.....I was lucky and needed the money.......LOL

She laughed and wrote out the check....

I have many many good memories from there........and we had some terrific races........

I won a Super Pro race one night that had 100 cars......and they also ran a Stock/Super Stock event......The place was packed.....and I have the Island Competition writeup to prove the car count was that high....It says it right in the opening line written by Hank Dinger....

Could it ever get back to days like that......Well I doubt it.....but that would not be their fault as the times have changed dramatically.......

We are at the tail end of the glory days of drag racing.........

I am fortunate to have been a part of it from the mid 1960's

and back then Ed Kowalick was supposed to race Cousin Bruce Morrow one Sunday......Ed was trying to find a car for Bruce to drive......they asked me if I would let him drive my '58 Pontiac that I was racing for fun.....I said NO.....figured he would break it....

Like I said I have a lot of memories from there....and could fill a book with them....and so could a lot of other guys that raced there every week for many years.....

I hope they can survive....

Re: ISLAND DRAG-WAY..Hackettstown NJ-Good news.

How about we take a break from the Island bashing and wait to see how this weekend goes. I've personally have never been there but, one of my best buds grew up at the track and was pretty heartbroken when the track was closed last year. For him it was a quick drive from PA over to NJ and he did a lot of testing & racing there. Rather the place is great or the place is a dump it's still "someones home". We should all be glad another track is open in NJ. It gives racers another place to race and get kids off the street. I would feel the same way if someone said stuff about Atco which is where I was brought up and spent my summers as a kid. If Island falls on it's face then for some of us on here we can say "I told you so" or if it's a success and they do great then some of us can say "woo hoo." Let's not start the Bus up before they even get up and running at least let them get a weekend of racing in and give them a chance.

For the people who have been to Numidia, we know the place is great, Bob and his Family are great and so are the people who come out and support the track. The food is some of the best ever at a racetrack. I love it and it's one of my Top 3 tracks. I wish the track wasn't 4.5 hours away for me and I'd be up there every week but, I make it up there twice a year to support it because I know how much heart and soul Bob has put into the track to make it where it is today. Just wish we could get a divisional back there again but, we have the next best thing with the 90 Nationals and Stk/SS Shootout in September.

On Monday we can all go back to our keyboards and discuss how great or horrible the weekend was at the track.

West Hampton was always a dump but when they closed a lot of Long Island racers quit. Having Island Dragway open is a good thing IMO, if you don't like it, don't go there. For me it opens up the ability to test in the late fall without going all the way to Atco which would be more trouble than it was worth.

Racers didn't quit, test/tuners quit. The racers left and went to ETown long before they closed.

West Hampton was almost all bracket racers not T/T, I raced there from 71 till 88 when I moved to NH, how many years did you race there. Do you know what it cost and the time it takes to go from Suffolk County to E Town for a Sunday bracket race, the many Hampton bracket racers that I know who quit do, TOO MUCH.

I was there that Sunday WABC-AM day. Bruce ended up getting into a 69 Plymouth Super-bee, and they made sure it was not a stick.

It was pretty funny and was talked about much on the AM radio that week.

I can't speak for James because he now mostly races Stock Eliminator as opposed to a weekly brackets points program. As for West Hampton, it was mostly bracket racers, not as much test & tune. I started racing exclusively at Atco, Etown and Island beginning in 2001. At that time, I was still living on Long Island and West Hampton was still open. When it closed, only a few started racing in NJ like I did; I was in the minority. Most quit racing either completely; a few continued racing only occasionally.

Yes it was a good weekend for sure and 900+ on Friday night was crazy!!!
Melissa and John did a fantastic job all weekend and Wednesday night is family night!!
Yea it was hot but John did a great job with the track prep.
Oh and they had what Ed said they didn't have also!!
Again Great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Re: ISLAND DRAG-WAY..Hackettstown NJ-Good news.

900 cars? or was it bugs......LOL

If they got 900 people thru the gate good for them....paying customers is what they need.....and the T&T or street crowd is their best way to start to make it back from where they were....

12 Super Pro cars on Saturday.......and I'd guess a little better in Pro.....
I could easily name who was there...

I was at Numidia......and trust me they got it goin on out there.....

Islands racers biggest loss was when Bob Dimino was not able to buy the place a number of years ago.......He would have surely turned the place around as he has done at Numidia

If Melissa and John were smart they would call Bob and ask him for his advice.....I am sure he learned from others such as the Baders out at Norwalk Ohio......Do what they do.....and trust me it works....

Bob Dimino knows how to treat people and it makes a huge difference.....

Nice to see this thread turned back around from the bashing, thread derailment, kick some one who is down stuff and comparison to Numidia.Rich not 900 cars on Fri but 900+bodies on the grounds 200 cars,Hats off to Melissa and crew,As has been said before Bob Diminos passion, efforts and funding have made Numidia the place to be for racers, having been a racer Bob knows what racers wants and needs are,the only issue with Numidia for the North Jersey -Metro racer is depending on location two and a half to three and a half hours each direction, that amount of travel time is not for everyone ,yes would have been nice if Bob got Island. Island Sat. bracket and test and tune was moderate car count but still cars and bodies on the grounds,Sunday was a repeat of Friday with a line going out the gate and to the Highway. 200-300 cars ,Best of luck to Melissa and crew and lets not have any more negative words on this thread.Bill C.

Rich Biebel 07-09-2013 07:29 PM

Re: ISLAND DRAG-WAY..Hackettstown NJ-Good news.

The travel time to Numidia is the biggest hurdle for anyone that was an Island regular.....myself included...

2 hours 10-15 minute out.......4 hours back thanks to insane Rt 80 holiday weekend traffic.....and not a fun ride.......

Would I prefer to race at Island? Well since it is half an hour from home that is a no brainer!!

But I am never locked into one race track and could care less about the points or the bracket finals.....Not interested in that program at all and have not been for many years...been there done that as the saying goes....

I will quote Bill C. here ....."best of luck to Melissa and crew and lets not have any more negative words on this thread".

Re: ISLAND DRAG-WAY..Hackettstown NJ-Good news.

Well if you must know....Mr. 1320racer had every intent of being there both Satuday and Sunday as I am every points weekend but I did the right thing for my son.

Big 3 day jr. race this past weekend at MIR. Arrived on Friday, raced all day/night and intended to leave Saturday morning by 9:00AM. Made plans months ago with another jr. family to transport Kyle's car and run him on Saturday and Sunday. Well Saturday morning Kyle don't feel well and with the extreme heat, I felt his designated crewchief would be worn out long before racing ended which btw was 11:30PM, running 2 cars. So I made the decision to stay.

It ain't about me, it's all about him/the kids now.

Going to miss a few more points days too. Heading to Bristol in 1 week.

Glad you went and it's no surprise you had a great time. Hopefully we'll see more of you.

I would do Numidia again for any multi-day race weekend deal.

The ride out was no problem.....the ride home was worse than the last time I made a trip out there......That day I got caught in the Pocono Raceway traffic added to the normal mess...

This time it was just holiday traffic I guess and New York drivers trying to get home......I was losing it as some of them were driving like maniacs....

4 hours !!!!

I learned a long time ago to avoid going to Numida or Beaver Springs on a Pocono race weekend. Traffic was always terrible coming home. The last couple of times I went that way during a Pocono weekend, I would take the PA turnpike south from 80 and take either 209 or 22 home to avoid the area. More mileage, but quicker on those weekends.

Re: ISLAND DRAG-WAY..Hackettstown NJ-Good news.

Jeff the 380 merge is where it always starts.....this time it went all the way to NJ.....and barely moving for miles....

2 lanes wide is the real issue.....To many cars and not enough road...

Pocono did have an IndyCar race but the real heavy traffic looked like it was coming from 380 down from up north.....

Numidia is a great track and I visited the pay window both days..
My car was very happy there.....No issues whatsoever....
