Naah! It might be a good deal but it's "Old School" compared to a Neon.

Re: So all of you Mopar guys!

Out of curiosity took a quick look and Neon's a getting harder to find up here in the Northeast. Either they want too much for it or it's just too far gone. What about some of the other 4cyl FWD models in the Mopar family from around that era? The Stratus, Cirrus, Sebring or Breeze? I did see in one of the older dime rocket posts someone mentioned using a 96 Dakota with the AMC 2.5L but the class guide is vague on that one. Says regular cabs must use M/T but it says that a SLT Plus can use an auto and they list it with a 112" wb which would be a short bed regular cab!

2000 base Breeze uses the same 2.0 as the Neon. Longer wheelbase might make it a better FWD Racer than Neon. Pretty easy EF/S but heavy! Probably a better E car than the Neon is a D car.
2004 Stratus uses bigger (2.4 2.5 ?) combo. I don't know how this engine compares to the 2.0. LOOONG stroke, 4-valve head, lots of compression. It might be a pretty good JYD. Probably DF/S car. WAY too heavy as an EF/S.
Anybody else out there care to comment?

There was a little Mopar at a CIC race last week that took out about 3 million dollar's worth of race cars and support stuff on his way to the win. It was a 1986 charger EFS 135 17.45 index going 15.90s. Does that count. Tom

The AMC 2.5 is rated too high compared to the 4.0 135HP unless its changed recently. The 113 WB is the same as my 92 Comanche. Don't think the 2.5 is a good combo.

Jimi, I'm going to hell just for the nice cars that I've cut up in my lifetime! I won't cut up nice cars anymore!
THAT being said, If you even THINK about cutting up that car, I will put you over my knee and spank the thought right out of your mind!
And while I'm doing it, your Mom and Dad will be smiling down from Heaven!

That's a cool really rare piece. Would hate to find parts for that engine.

A 2005 SRT4 isn't in the stock car classification. You must present it as a 2004 SRT and the only class in stock is AAF/S.
You can also present it (still as a 2004 SRT) in Super Stock in SS/H,I,J, manual or automatic...

I've talked to a couple Neon guru's and they seem to think it would only be worth it with a manual and i wouldn't even attempt racing a manual. I wouldn't of thought they would be that bad since you can use the same trans the turbo dodge guys all run but these Neon engines like more RPM. I found info off of a Neon page over a decade ago where someone got a best of 14.96 out of one when the index was 14.95. Hardest part is finding a half decent body. Anything decent everyone wants over 3k for one up here in the northeast. I do know where there's a supposed really clean 96 4dr with a blown head gasket. I keep looking tho not sure if the 95-99 or the 2000-2005 ones are the way to go. The 2000-2005 ones are a couple hundred lbs heavier. Then the question on the 95-99 do you go SOHC or DOHC? Either way the stock cams are really small on all the Neon engines. But so many circle guys race these cars directly against the Ecotec's and have success so maybe it can work? These Neon's stock with an auto are only good for around a mid 17 if you're lucky. Some guys are only getting 18 sec from them.

Similar to what I found. I had one I had purchased for a few hundred dollars, running/driving. I was doing work on it here and there, but it ate a trans. Simply put, I had no desire to pull the trans/nor put money into rebuilding it...so I sent it off for recycling. Sorry Billy!

What exactly would you have to "cut up" on a 13 or 14 second FWD Stocker? Don`t even need a roll bar to go that slow. As for a Neon being a "valuable collector car", I am sure all the 440 six pak, Hemi Cudas, 427 Fairlane/428 Cobra Jet Mustangs, and 396/375HP& 427/425HP and 302 Z28 Camaro racers are rolling their eyes at that statement!

I was just kidding, Rory. I know sarcasm doesn't translate to the written word sometimes.

As soon as one of us Mopar guys would build a Neon, we would get horsepower put on us, like Mopar combos always do.....;)

The '80s turbo 2.2 cars may be even simpler to catch the index.

As a project during Covid I found a clean '85 Chrysler Wagon with the 2.2 turbo. Some basic set up and improvements and we had a .60 under stocker that my 16 year old could drive to the track if wanted.

The car was surprisingly consistent once we figured out the 60'

.60 under for less then $7,000 CDN.....thats only $32.00 USD!

Re: So all of you Mopar guys!

Not a Neon but it does get "cool factor" points for being a wagon!

The biggest problem I see with this entire post is that us Chevy and Ford guys forget that the millions and millions of mopars built throughout the years are extremely rare and we will burn in the pits of hell if we dare cut up such a fine machine..........lol

Artie sold his SS/GS Neon for cheap, was almost tempted myself.

I knew Artie sold his.
When he had it we spent a lot of time brainstorming to get a little more out of it.
I really enjoyed the talks with Artie.
Hope he is enjoying retirement and his travel across the seas on the cruises.

I just checked cars.com, and the cheapest Neon within 500 miles was a $3995 2004 SXT 4-door automatic with what NHRA calls the 122/132.It would fit in BF/S-C/FS-DF/S. Now how much additional would it cost to get it running under the 14.65, 15.15 or 15.60 indexes?
