Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
John Halbig,Denville New Jersey about 1980-82-'61 Chevy Impala hardtop,250 horse 348,4 speed,O/S, went 13.05 or so with an early rear end. We used to talk by phone on his nickle from Joisey during that time when he was doing that car. I think he got it into the 12's at either Island Dragway or Englishtown.

Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
There was a guy named Everett Hatch from (Portland?) Oregon who ran a '56 Packard Clipper in D Gas with a Carribean twin four barrel manifold, and he and his car were featured in Hot Rod magazine back in the late '50s, because his car was very fast, for its class. I think it may have held the D Gas national record for an extended amount of time.
Additionally, there was some guy from Indianapolis who had a '56 Golden Hawk (the one with the Packard 352 motor) who put a GMC-6:71 on it and ran A Gas Supercharged for awhile. A buddy of mine almost bought that car in about 1959. Can't remember his name, but it was something funny like "Casey Jones," or such. |
Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....

Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
Anybody remember Hue-Baby Waters on the NC east coast,. I was very young back then but remember it as being 56 or 57 oldsmobile. The back rims were painted half black and other half white. He ran back in the day when Mr Ed,Bobby Warren,Garley Daniels, Troy Dennis, Sox @ Martin and many other legends. By the way he was no kin to me that i know of .Sure would love to see some more old pictures from Kinston Drag Strip. If you go on kdsmotorsports.com and scroll down to bottom you can click on some really nice old old photos taken there .Most of these photos were taken by the lata Wayne Greenway. He was the track announcer for as long as i can remember ,even as i began racing and then my son also. One of the best in the business.. Take a look and enjoy.

Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
Maybe I'm biased but how about Howard Barsky's 1957 two door station wagon with 283 cubic inches and dual wcfb carbs running 11 teens in SS/NA going through the traps at 9300 rpm

I like that tubo 4 cylinder Mustangs of Mark Yacavone, Tom Gould's Corvair, that six cylinder Chevy II from down south, the four cylinder red S-10 that the guy from Miss. ran, the slant six early 80 mopar from Kansas, ed fernandez' gremlin, Bob Salemi's jeep truck, and of course Billy Nees' Novas-just about anything with less than 8 cylinders than's not a v-6, although some of them are ok too. |
Re: Coolest or Oddest Combo.....
Here are a few that I can think off in recent times, that haven't been mentioned already.
Billy Nees built a pair of 110 cid 4 cyl '85 Sunbirds that I raced, a FI version for HF/SA (Mark Yac raced this car before I was given it), and a turbo version for AF/S. Greg Philley's W/SA 140 Mustang. Billy's own pair of 230 I-6 Novas (two of only three in the country? Greg Fulk has the other). Billy's own 307 4 door R/SA Nova. My current car, bought from Tom Kasch, '92 Olds Toronoado 231/170 for FF/SA (the Stephenson family from IL have another ex-Kasch Olds, a '91 Delta 231). Bob Shaw has had a few since I've been racing, an early 80's turbo Buick V/SA that he raced at the '01 Class Nat'ls, his '85 El Camino V/SA, his turbo Capri 140 (throttle body) U/SA, An '86 Caprice V/SA and his current FI Cadilac U/SA Mark Walton's early 80's Mustang turbo stick (FI combo, was I/FI, now P/S), Yac's early 80's Turbo Stang stick U/S, there is a guy from northeast Canada Vince Hazel, V/S mid 80's Camaro V6. ANother car I had the chance to drive a few times, Cap't Jack McCarthy's U/SA '60 Chevy Kingswood wagon...4470 pounds, 283. I could go on and on, if I thought about it more. I love the odd, one-off and rare combinations...most of which are the older cars. Anyone happen to catch, at Barrett-Jackson, that '65 Ford Galaxie R-code 427/425 that went for over $100k? Wonder what that would fit? I would guess around SS/GA? Bob Hammel a few years back in Div 1 raced a '67 Galaxie, I think it was a 427, in SS/GA. Oops, there's another one. At the Dutch in '06, a genteman had a mid 60's big Ford with a 390 or 352 for M/S, light blue, I forget his name. |
