How is it against the rules to chose or not chose to use the clutch for any gear changes after launching?

Very cool video and nicely synchronized wheelies too. I like the way Evan's video is done to show both drivers. Hopefully that big guy in the black firejacket didn't get whiplash and sues for ownership of the Chevy II. :)

Ever read the NHRA rule book in the section of (manual transmission)? I know, I know-that doesn't mean i have to use the clutch, right?

Yup, it's in the rule book in black and white. Clutchless transmissions prohibited. Clutch must be used to change gears in a conventional manner. See General Regulations 2:12. I'm actually suprised that no one has been called on this since it's realtively easy to tell from the sidelines if someone clutches or not. I suppose proving it would be another matter.

Define "conventional manner". Ask a trucker how often he uses the clutch pedal to shift.
In other words, what's conventional to you may not be conventional to me.

I think the defining words are "clutch must be used to change gears". Without that line, I guess "conventional" could be anything a person want's it to be.

That's right!! NHRA needs to prosecute!! The stick cars are running away with the classes!! And they have such an advantage over the autos that soon there won't be anyone running an automatic!!
You tell 'em, Chicken Little.

I honestly don't think that NHRA or IHRA officials give a flip how stick cars gets down the track, as long as they get down.
Meaning I don't see them using man hours policing stick cars. Personally I would like to see the rule be changed in super stock.

Dale, another good way to check for clutchless syncros is to rock the car back and forth in each gear if it pops out of gear you`re done. That`s all NHRA cares about and they checked for them at Indy this year,I know I was one of them.
