Went thru tear down with no problem till they asked me what kind of hyd. lifter was in the car. I said TRW and they informed me that they had to be FORD! The rule book said OEM and I took that as OEM replacement. I was wrong and they were nice, but sent me on my way!!!!!!! The stick car back then would bend valves every week the car went out. See you had to run stock valve train back then. Springs were checked both open and seat. We were allowed 97lbs on the seat and 298 open. Used to have to buy 50 springs at a time to get 16 good ones. I still have over a 100 springs left and I have been doing engines in my shop for the last 40 years. In 1977 we changed to a automatic and set the record. We felt pretty good about ourselves so my partner went to the 1977 Sportsnational's in Bowling Green, KY. He won class and during tear down the guy helping him knocked the two valve springs and shims they were going to check off the table before they had checked them for pressure. They gave them one chance to put the shims with the right springs. Bottom line, one spring was 12lbs lite, the other was 2lbs over!!!!!!!! So you guys that want to go back to the good old days can have them. I for one enjoy what the class has evolved into!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember when we were checked at the malls and all casting numbers were looked at before we could go to the track ?? Dont miss that

Can't remember the year but it was in the 70's. My family campained a D/S mustang as well and was in tear down at Indy when a lifter issue came up! The way it was told to me that another racer that ran the same combo was tearing down also and said our lifters were wrong because they did'nt look like his and he knew his was right. I believe Farmer asked my Dad where he got the lifters and he said straight from Ford. The other guy did'nt beleive him, so my dad told his mechanic to go to the trailor and get the box of lifters;which he did, still sealed in the box straight from ford! He said that he can't buy anything like that so my Dad told him he can just have those because you must be running the wrong lifters!!! lol He past tech!!!

Re: Did you get caught and what happened?

I got a kinda funny one...and for those of you who know me y'all know i'm a bit of a smart ***, ok change that i'm just an ***...lol...So the story goes like this, It was around 95 or 96 and dad and I had our 86 camaro we ran in H/SA and i'm in the lanes ready to make a run at a national event when a tech guy who shall remain nameless slides under my car and proceeds to try to stick a magnet to the driveshaft in my car, much to my delight i hear it constantly "tinging" on the driveshaft and i laugh to myself, BUT to his excitement when the magnet wouldn't stick he thought he was gonna get to toss me right there, so he gets his fellow tech guy and a few other cronies and they begin an intense discussion about the fact that i had an aluminum driveshaft in the car and how they were gonna toss me. Now the whole time i know that it's perfectly legal because the car came with one from the factory, this was before the driveshaft rules changed mind you, anyhow i'm there chuckling under my breath as they scheme on how they're tossing me. So i get in the car and begin strapping in when they decide they'd had enough evidence and i was tossed. The nameless tech guy walked up and said "hey you got an aluminum driveshaft in this thing, you DO know this is a stocker right?" Well as i stated before I'm an *** and his condescending statement lit my fire and i spouted back "yea i KNOW it's a stocker and it came from the factory with an aluminum shaft so read your rulebook and get out my door so i can make a run" this statement by me seemed must have infuriated him and when i simply pulled out the lanes and made my run i assume all hell broke loose in his head because when i got to the scales Danny Gracia was waiting on me, he said "hey i know this things legal and it came with an aluminum shaft but do you really have to make my guy mad?" I couldn't help but laugh and tell Danny that it was too easy to pass up and he simply told me "have a good race."

Oh i forgot i got another one. I raced my stocker in SS trim for 2000 in preparation for the Grand Am we were building to run SS/CM the next year. Well this was when they were all gung ho about finding electronic cheating and after i'd won the quarter finals at the houston national they pulled me, along with the other 2 quarter finals winners off the scales and simply told me "step away from the car" so i obliged and 3 guys jumped in my car like a fat kid at a cake buffet. LOL Well after 15 minutes of them running through all the wires in the car i decide to walk up and ask them what they are looking for, well when i do this it pisses one of them off and he spouts "we told you to step away from the car and when we're done WE'LL tell you what we're looking for" so i oblige and kinda get annoyed at the same time. Again please remember for those that don't know me, i'm an ***. SO after another 15 minutes of tracing wires and conferring with themselves the 3 tech guys elect the one new guy to come approach me, not the one that was an *** to me either, so this young guy walks up and says "hey can you show us where the tranny brake wire is?" well folks i instantly become SUPER *** and i'm laughing as i tell mr. butthead tech guy that it's a STOCKER and i'm running it in SS off the footbrake, hence there IS NO TRANNY BRAKE wire" and again Danny had to come tell me to "have a good race"....Those two incidents have made for alot of late night laughs between my dad and i and some friends around the shop.

Several years ago Rickie Smith got DQ for this.

I forty years of enjoying Stock and Super Stock I seem to remember these stories.

I can't vouch for their validity, so they may have GROWN from the little acorn...............

1-the spare tire filled with concrete
2-the SS wagon using bulletproof glass in the tailgate
3-the rear bumper made of lead (my dad fabbed the brackets to mount it)
4-"Please don't lean on the car!!!" (acid dipped doors?)
5-Stopping down in the last turnoff to pull the rear seat up and throw rocks in the car before going to the scales (..."vapor lock, honest!")

Re: Did you get caught and what happened?

I had a mishap at Pomona during the '88 Winters.I had a blue 66 Chev Bel Air 2 dr post car running in P/SA, 3690 lbs with driver minimum. We ran two time trials on Thursday and Friday, one Saturday morning, then round 1. After the Saturday time only, the car weighed 10 pounds over, so I figured I'd put gas in it after first round. Prior to that, the car was heavy, but getting lighter, as it used five pounds of fuel every run.Paired up, ran the round, won first round. Went across the scale, it said five pounds light. Weighed again, same thing, yer OUTA here!! I knew the car didn't use fifteen pounds of fuel in one run, but it taught me to be sure I was 20-30 pounds over prior to a run where weight was going to be determined afterward. It was approximately 60 degrees when we first ran that day, and about 80 when we ran first round. Also, what percent of 3700 pounds is 10 pounds? Scales can fluctuate, always be ready in advance.

I've been told that the guy that bought Lee Shepard's old Green Modified Production Chevy wagon found a layer of lead form fitted between the headliner and the roof. No wonder it was so heavy.
I bought theModified Prodiction Chevy 11 of Dennis Faerman and Jones. I went to take the radio out and got hit in the face with a lead filled radio. I sure wasn't expecting that. It also had one 4 in pipe(?) in the cage right over the rearend that sounded solid. I never messed with it.
