I, just as you do, dont want any more than 40 psi but I do it differently. Like I said, many ways to skin a cat. I use a slightly larger pump and then dump extra back to pan down the back of the pan. I never see a drop in pressure at the end of a run(unless I run 3 quarts). I use a set screw on the spring to set the pressure to dump. I mill a slot so that if pressure builds up, as the unloader moves back it will uncover more slot and dump to pan. It takes very little HP to turn a oil pump dumping to pan, but it does take HP to turn a pump dead heading to bypass in its self. Man it doesnt mean I know any more than you do, I just do it differently. Probably same end result

Only have been CNC machining blocks for 11 years or so.
