Re: Larry Morgan tells it like it is!
If it were me, the CJ's, COPOs, and DP's would be the new Pro Stockers. There could be brand recognition and parity, and maybe some serious manufacturer involvement again. Look back to the Funny Cars and A/FX in the 60's. The manufacturers didn't gain any sales that way, just like I doubt anyone bought a new Dart because Allen Johnson wins in one (or they didn't after finding out a carbureted Hemi isn't on the option sheet). They want to sell cars people can see race, and actually buy the street counterpart of the next day. Which is why they wanted guys like Sox and Martin, for an example, in Super Stock and Stock. If you were a die-hard PS fan, and you saw Dave Connolly win in a white COPO, you could actually go to your Chevy dealer the next day, buy a new white Camaro, and feel like you were in a car just like Connolly drives. Try that in a Dart!

Re: Larry Morgan tells it like it is!
Michael Beard pictorial is right on, put the body styles of the new generation cars (Mustang/Camaro and Challengers) back to the style and showmanship of the Butch Leal/Ronny Sox etc. etc. days. From an old school racer the 'NHRA' days are numbered as they are so out of touch with the grass roots racer and fans.
I can guarantee you that the current climate is not what Wally Parks had envisioned and corporate America is watching and when they see all the empty seats and dwindling participants the count down is on. Multi car teams in both NHRA and Nascar are going to be the ultimate downfall as they are sucking the life blood out of both sports. |

Re: Larry Morgan tells it like it is!
Certainly impressive, but likely still being held back I'm sure. I don't think we have seen the full potential of these "New World Super Stockers" yet. In my opinion NHRA have "missed the boat" by integrating the new cars in with Traditional Super Stock Classes. These types of cars can hold a show on there own somewhere between Pro Stock and Comp (my opinion). Manufactures development and production should have been considered through communication first and responsible provisions should have been made. I know the current Pro Stock bodies all look the same. Their results of performance are all within hundredths of one another, so they seem to be all equal in aerodynamics and it's branding, knowledge, devotion and funding that makes the winner. NHRA have allowed Pro Stock to evolve to where we are at today and it would be hard to change that. I'm positive Larry Morgan had a lot more to say, its voices like his any many others that have left the sport that need to be in the same room as the decision makers. We all read posts of discouragement from virtually every class. Drag Racing is "business" at all levels and things aren't being recognized as such. Just an opinion…MB.

Re: Larry Morgan tells it like it is!
It all makes sense now right...
since Pro-Stock rear axle assemblies are $100,000 a copy... I finally understand why all these $100,000 "Stockers" look like such a "bargain" (sarcy)... ALL of this stuff is waaaay outta hand. Good interview again from Larry |
