Re: Let's have a discussion about setting records

Set a record- get a "first round BYE".....

only a few liked (or understood) my first round bye for all top qualifiers (amount changes every race), but evens out the field after rd 1 (64, 32, 16, 8 cars left) - no more bye runs after first round... sounds complicated, but it's not... anyone watch March Madness??? they went from 64 teams to 68 and have first rd play-in games (same theory).

Both of these reward the high performers with rd 1 byes.

I have set National Records on numerous occasions (and am not particularly happy when they go back to minimum after two years). I'd love to run class at Divisional races, just saying the National Record issue and running class at Divisionals are two separate issues and should be dealt with on separate threads. Incidentally, Division 6 has a year end CIC type race sponsored by the Gaynors based on points accumulated during the season.

Re: Let's have a discussion about setting records

Working on my presentation. There is a lot of concern over the factory cars gobbling up all the top 10 qualifying points at every race. In my presentation, I am proposing that all factory cars run their own eliminator, earn their own points, qualifying points, and record points as I have suggested for traditional stock and super stock classes. Factory cars should be run with the pros at national events to gain exposure for class, the owners, drivers, sponsors and corporate America (GM, Chrysler, Ford). At division races factory cars will still be in their own class and be featured at the end of each qualifying session. I looked real quick at two recent races to look at the top 10 qualifiers in s and ss. I know its a small sample but here it is.

Somebody said "run class only"?? Do you not realize many classes will only have one car?

Re: Let's have a discussion about setting records

I think you should get the record, whether you want it or not, if you run quicker or faster than the current record at an Divisional, National, or Open. It shouldn't matter if it is Qualifying, Class, or Eliminations. As long as it was backed up within 1%, it's yours. Pass fuel, pass weight, seal the motor right then and there on the return road and be given a 30 day window for a tear down or before your next race, whichever is sooner. Can't race another event until you have fulfilled the tear down obligation. If you pass, congrats you are the new record holder!

Now on to the perks you've just earned: All the ideas proposed sounded good. I like the idea of at least a round's worth of points. I also like the free grade point idea. A free national event entry is a great idea or maybe $100 credit toward one. The insurance is never free even for gold cards I think? Tom's idea of first round bye is a nice idea that can definitely be built on. ND coverage helps. Engineers/experienced tech officials will be necessary.

So I understand if 5 cars set records at one event they all get first rd bye runs?

Ed, I applaud your efforts. Not trying to be negative, but how would this encourage record setting? Most folks wait for Nat'l Opens now, with no hp penalty.

Re: Let's have a discussion about setting records

Mark in my proposal to Nhra that as well as class at divisional was dropped. Not enough racers onboard. Stay positive people. I've been told that will.never work before. Ask Stephen Belanger and Gene Bichlmeier how they made out with my K deal. A lot of people said that would never happen......
