You have to compare apples to apples here, yes I had no problem back in the late 70's matting my mustang and dumping the clutch. Sometimes it would bounce the valve springs a few times before launch but hey that was cool. yesteryears motors did not have the power or the acceleration rates to really hurt themselves while winding them up for launch. I raced a stick car for over 25 years and at some point I felt it was necessary to utilize a rev. limiter, not so much for drivimg technique but to save the engine. I know there's alot of guys that frown on this and say it's not necc. and for some it's not but I really don't see the big deal about it. Just for grins why don't we see if all the pro-stock guys would make a run without them, it may take a while to broom up the mess but hey we've proven a p oint right? For stick cars you are allowed to use rev limiter's for top end rev's only, in other words to keep from blowing the motor up...they are not allowed with auto's.

You guys need to watch Jimmy Bridges drive his SS/B Corvette sometime. No 2 step no nothing. I asked Jimmy how he did it one time, and he told me that when the top bulb came on he started patting the gas and by the time the bottom one flashed the gas pedal was on the floor. This is a guy that has probably made as many or more trips down the dragstrip than anyone I know.

Todd, I guess no else wants to handle this, so I'll give it a shot.
We raced with the NMCA and Tony DePillo's spinoff group, NSCA in 1999 and 2000. There were quite a few races in the middle of the country at that time.
We ran in NSS and N/Junior Stock , (later N/MC...That's another story)
Those are fixed index classes with a breakout (12.50, 12.00, etc) There were no heads up , flat out runs in those classes, even in class runoffs. Main reason was there were no limits on anything i.e cubic inch, camshaft , etc. The engines just had to look something like what came in the car.
There were a couple of street type brackets that were a regular part of the program, but no points ,but some contingency awards. I suppose they were there for the locals, so they could participate when the show came to their local track.
All the rest was flat out, fastest street car type classes such as 10.5 tire, triple nitrous etc, that looked like they were out of control for atleast half of the quarter mile. Interesting and entertaining, but not anything that could compete where consistency was the key.
The events themselves were fun, with all door cars ,no dragsters, no leakers or oilers (well, not the fuel burning kind anyway).
Still ,there was hardly ever anyone in the stands, except for St Louis, maybe. That's even after all the magazine hype of the 90's about fast street cars. Guys like Tony poured their hearts out and alot of their time to make it grow, but never did. Even the S/SS combos later on, were not supported very well.

Todd, back to your deal.
There 's no sense wearing out a good S/SS car .All you need is a TRW 455, real "stock" 6 X heads, flat tappet cam, regular old Comp valve springs, and some ballast to juggle around and you're good to go.

I raced in stock before going to the NMCA and have had a blast ever since. The only drawback is the towing. Hope to see you at BG Larry!

I better not show this thread to my dad. He never had a 2 step, Chips or anything but a 1/2 speed tach. Hemi, 4 speed and 3000 lbs.

I drove his 1972 restored Pro Stocker 200 feet one day with the Hemi, 4speed and 2 dominators on it. My girlfriend did me no good for months after that. No **** I got goose bumps just loading it up in the trailer.

Roy Hill once told me years ago that the "HIT" from a Pro Stocker was better than sex !

I didnt even have to get the HIT. Just looking at that linkage with 1 to 1 linkage was awesome.
