Donnie, the last time i saw it it was on a trailer at a rest stop i think coming back from the Gators and Mike Mckinney was driving it. I got to see that engine apart a couple of times and it had some "VERY" interesting headers on it. That car was like a mini pro stocker in its day. Tom

Hard to vote against the Coal Digger, I did like the Turnage Nitro 9 too.

We were just talking about those headers the other day! The first time I saw them was in tear-down at the SPORTSNationals in '75-'76. Jack (Roush) told me to get some rags and cover the "special features" and put the headers in the trunk and shut it. Sometime in the early eighties, I saw a small ad in the back of a magazine for a set that looked just like those. I'm sure others had 'em, but it took a while before they were common knowledge!

In 1975, I believe, the Coal Digger made the trip from KY to the Winternationals on an open trailer pulled behind the Nitro 9 enclosed truck. It'd be nice to have a picture of that! Clyde Brandon and Gene Turnage were around here quite a bit back then.

 While we're in this neighborhood I've got a Ford question: Didn't somebody run a 71 Mustang Boss 429 for awhile. I think it fit in SS/D or E. I wanna say it was a Harold Stout car, but I've slept since then.....:o

Boss 429 Mustangs were only produced in 69 & 70, the 71`s did have several versions of the 429 Wedge engine available. A local guy ran a 70 Boss 429 in SS/D briefly in the mid 70`s , but it was not a very serious effort, and wasn`t close the index.
Mr. Bowles, I was at the 1979 Fallnationals in Seattle, and I gotta say, your Dads Fairmont Super Modified was very memorable. As I recall, it not only won Modified Eliminator at Seattle, it also won either best appearing or best engineered. What ever became of the Fairmont? That was one of my all time favorite cars.

Rory,

Being a newbie, I don't want to get busted for hi-jacking the thread, but to answer your question, The Fairmont never left Dad's ownership. It's safe and sound in the shop. I'd be glad to answer any questions if you (or anyone else) would like to PM me. It won Best Appearing Car at Seattle.

Ed Nowakowski (I hope I got that right!) took the Fairmont from a very rough Don Hardy roller to a beautiful show piece. Ed had an equally beautiful pearl white Mustang named Mean Disposition that ran S/S

Here's an early shot most have never seen of the Coal Digger. The car was driven home from the dealership to the garage to start getting it race ready. It came from the dealer with a Mach 1 decal on the left fender only, but the car was a Boss 351 new, then later rebadged to run the Cleveland.

Dont forget Jim Morgan from Maryland and his S/S 428 Mustangs. He was probaly the only Mustang racer using a 12 bolt Chevy rear back in the day. He never won a natioal event but he was a 2 time Div. 1 Champion, many time class winner, and one heck of a good engine builder today.

That would be the one...that's an "official" NHRA photograph, taken at Seattle. I have the 8"x10" of that. If there's interest, tell me which forum is best, and I'll post some more Fairmont pictures.

Thanks for the welcome, now what about those Mustangs???

Here's one of the 1976 Indy final that Kyle Carrothers sent me a few years ago. I have no idea where/who he stole it from! : )

I've seen the finishline shot of Harold and Ray, but what year was that ('82?)? It's hard to believe that car never won a national event, but the "climate" back then wasn't very favorable to Ford.
