What's up with this, I don't see any Dodge's or Plymouth's listed here in this 62 Winternationals list...was this 383/343 2x4 dual carb combo not out yet.

Moose,

I see you are doing your homework....;)

But let me explain,,,,,,,,,,'most honorable thread contributor'

The 1962 Dodge 'Polara 500' with the 383/343 HP combination had a
9.66 Weight-to-Horsepower Factor.

In 1962,,,,,,,,S/SA Class went from 0.00 to 9.89 Wt/Hp

Meaning, the 383/343 car would have to compete with the 413 Max-Wedge cars.

In 1963, the NHRA opened up the Stock Class, and
B/SA went from 9.50 to 10.59 Wt/Hp.

1965 Winternationals
B/SA Class Winner;
Alan Buckmaster,
64' Ford Galaxie 500
13.22 @ 106.25 MPH

1965 Indy Nationals
B/SA Class Winner
'Fastbacks Club of Dearborn, Michigan'
64' Ford Galaxie 500
13.06 @ 109.35 MPH

Maybe not... 65 Nats Rick Johnson beat the Ford by ALOT in the semi's and Larry Weitzel in the final. Both Rick and Larry were DQed for minor stuff. How did the Ford win ?

Those would have to be fair to good combinations because the the limiting factor (intake manifold) is out of the picture in superstock. I just wonder how they would police carburetor placement on an manufactured manifold.

Paul, I would think they would go with guidelines like they do for the crossram Mopar wedges and Hemis and the AMCs. They require the carbs to be positioned the same front-to-front, etc., and a minimum of 1" offset side to side.

The 383/343 would be an excellent choice in GT with a low profile mani similar to those used on a SS Street Hemi. Paul, how fast were the 361/305 cars going back then.

I'd like to see this GT combination in a car like Eric Bell's Challenger with the fresh air T/A hood.

On the 1962 Mopar Station Wagons,,,,

1962 Dodge Model #440 3-Seat/9-Passenger Station Wagon

Car Weight; 3608 lbs.
Wt/Hp Factor (383/343 HP) = 10.51
Classes;
1962 = S/SA
1963 = B/SA
1964 = B/SA
1965 = B/SA
1966 = C/SA
1967 = B/SA
1968 = F/SA
1969 = G/SA
1970 = H/SA
1971 = H/SA
1972 = SS/JA

Wt/Hp Factor (361/305 HP) = 11.83
Classes;
1962 = B/SA
1963 = D/SA
1964 = D/SA
1965 = D/SA
1966 = E/SA
1967 = D/SA
1968 = H/SA
1969 = I/SA
1970 = J/SA
1971 = J/SA
1972 = SS/LA

What is fairly obvious, the 62' Dodge Wagon with the 383/343 engine combination became highly desirable in 1968,
with the 10.51 Wt/Hp Factor in the new '1968' NHRA classes.

Pre-1968 (1963 thru 1967), the 62' Dodge Model #440 Station Wagon (383/343 HP), (# 3608 lbs.)
fell into the same class as the lighter (# 3313 lbs.) 62' Polara 500 (383/343 HP) 2-Door Hardtop.

Cannot find any records showing that a 62' Dodge Wagon with the
383/343 engine campaigned in 1962.

Hey PC, I've seen several black & white and color photo's of these 62 wagons on the web, but I'm not sure on what type of motors they were running as well...but I'll do some more digging.

383/343 HP = 10.00 - 10.49 Wt/HP

Looks like it's running in bracket (Pro ET)
12.43 shoe-polished on window,,,,,,,
