Can't recall much else but those 3 combos had some good running cars out there...

350 Chevys were pretty new and dominated the older combos right away. The real killer Chevy combo was the low compression 350/255......HP rating was low and they were fast.

A lot of people were hesitant to race one at first until they saw how fast the ones that did were.....

Boertman and Bobby Warren....and Bud Rowe had one.....

Rich,

The 1968 Nova SS350.

One tough S.O.B. in the {10.50 to 10.99 Wt/HP} Class.

This one was the dominant force at Dover Drag Strip in 1970 and 1971.

Have no record or pic of the K/SA winner, Craig Mueller, in a '58 Pontiac.

Would be great if somebody would post nat records & Indy class winners for the '60's & '70's, especially. OR, if there are links to click on to easily find all this info, would somebody please post those links, for info which is no longer accessible on these old threads.

Thanks !

RatPatrol and I are trying to compile all this history while it can still be scrounged up. I'll see what's missing here & try to post.

It's a shame NHRA didn't keep & post all this but unless you won Top Fuel or Pro Stock or something, all the class history is just GONE.

A shame because this era of, as Dennis Wilson put it in 2-Lane Blacktop, the era of "It Might Be The Jets" is never to be repeated. Not the same in the computer era. Fun, and expensive, but not the same.

BTW I think this is Mueller's 58 Pontiac in K/SA:

https://archive.petersen.org/pages/p...php?ref=350837

I've guessed it as a Chieftan 2dr sedan, 370/310hp-FI.
Or was the 370/310-FI still legal in 1970? Not sure what else fits, and fits the picture too.
These Petersen pictures zoom pretty well so you can see detail.

Here's 1970 Indy Stock/Manual - the other 1970 Indy I think are posted here already.

Here's my current interpretation of Car Models & Engines at 1970 Indy.
Comments welcome!

Note in F/S=9.50 and G/S=10.00 I was just hunting to see if any 429SCJ cars ran, ever, along with slowly figuring out how they were factored with a lot of help from on here.

Petersen shows a 70 Cyclone running F/S=9.50 in 70 Indy, not winning but jives with the C-Code (flat hood) 429SCJ factored at 395hp. Factoring for the 429SCJ's went down in 1971 & then they started winning a little.

Website story says Shellenberger won G/S=10.00 in a 70 Cobra 429SCJ. I was interested in that since I had one, but it only fits class if left unfactored at 375hp. And, as I go thru Petersen, I already see 3 other G/S=10.00 cars with a "T" on the windshield so I'm not sure the Shellenberger story is right, or maybe the wrong year.

The rest is hopefully self-explanatory, not too many guesses but none of this is error-free so feel free to chime in.

"...I'll see what's missing here & try to post..."

The name of the thread indicates that the 1970 nat records will be shown here.

I haven't been able to see a single one. All I see are some Indy class winners.

Am I missing something ?

When I see a car with "NHRA Nat Record Holder" on it, I'd like to be able to find evidence of that record, somewhere.

IIRC, some have said that the current nat records use to be published occasionally, in the "National Dragster" paper. But, I suppose a guy would have to have a COMPLETE collection, in order to find most of the records.

I think I realized the title is wrong, Tom does that sometimes just to keep us reading closely, like the 1968 nationals thread is really 1969 or vice versa.

Rich Biebel sent the late 1970 record sheet & I posted it here on pg3:

OK, I went to that thread & found the records list. Split it into stick & auto sections & enlarged 'em. You can click on the thumbnails & see 'em.

In the auto section, there's an E/SA '69 Pontiac. Jerry Stealy had the "Nemesis" RAIV powered Judge. IIRC, it was later in a towing accident. He swapped the running gear over to a wagon.

In the stick section, there's an H/S '70 Pontiac listed. Rod Kister had the "Big Iron" cars. The '70 was a black Judge. It apparently had a D-port engine, since it was in a lower class. Don't think a RAIV engine could run that low a class.

Pic #5 is of an O/S '61 wagon. It MAY be the one listed on the Indy class winners list. There was also a RAIV '70.5 Bird on that list. The driver name didn't ring a bell. But that 1946 number is on a Garber Pontiac E/S Bird, in pic #6.

Re: 1970 NHRA National Record Holders

Yes, I have Kister fitting class with a 70 GTO, 400/350hp base engine.

That wagon picture looks like a Q/S, and that would fit the sheet and confirm a guess I made:
4134/235=17.59 in Q/S=17.00 class for 1970

389/235hp

ok a few more pieces fit!
