Do you race at National Events ? Or Divisional Events ? Or any Events?

Then WHY is there no extra insurance charge at points races and National opens where the pro cars dont race. Explain that to us please.
Answer:
The Track Owners and Operators carry their own insurance as required by NHRA to operate a Lucas Oil event. Less Racers- Less Fans = less insurance.
I have been told that the largest claims come from pit vehicle accidents during National events. Hence why we that have pit vehicles need to have insurance on them, I know I do, $500 K in Liability on my Golf Car and Scooter. $150 per year
For the record I don't agree with the premiums we pay per event, only adds to the high cost of Racing at a National events. Add that to Fuel, Food, and Maint. adds up to about $1000 to $1200 per event, even more for longer distances.
Bottom line is if you wanna Play then you have to Pay !
But don't criticise the Pros, they pay along with us.

I'm wondering if the fans who show up at Maple Grove this weekend and actually enjoy class racing voice their disappointment to NHRA will be compensated in some way?
Free access to next weekend's Sportsman show?
I hope so.

From Maple Grove's site for next weekend -
Spectators who have tickets from the Auto-Plus Nationals will be admitted free. Those without Nationals tickets will pay $10.

I have been emailing Josh Peterson and asking him about paying $85 for a crew pass and only having a two day race. I suggested crediting all crew passes and allowing crew in for free. I was basically told to go **** in my hat. All unused tickets will be credited. So if you use it you are paying $85 for a crew pass to a 2 day race with no midway or concessions. I was also told by Josh that I could not come and get a refund. So there it is affected racers, you don't like it don't come back!

We have a portable weather station (I forget which brand but it is one used by many racers) and we take it trackside periodically for the weather.

Why don't you take the $85 credit and pay $10 at the gate next week........that's what they are going to charge .BTW , the ten bucks is per day / per person -- still a bunch cheaper .And you don't have to go in your hat ! !

I will. Its the simple fact that I was getting form letter answers from Josh. Unless that's his personality, maybe taught by NHRA, there was no personal response or no compassion to the situation. Like it or leave it!
I hope Maple Grove pockets the $10 per spectator and tells NHRA nobody came to watch.

I spent the day at Maple Grove. The field where the sportsmen parking has to be is still soaked beyond even driving a golf cart over more then half of it! I didnt just look at it I walked right thru the middle of. If we had parked our motorhomes and trailers there, the new string on class racer would have been "Stuck at Maple Grove". Management made the right call and saved us a lot of grief.
After 30 inches of rain in September the track stayed dry and very fast all
day! As a regular at MG, I can honestly say the track water problem is fixed!!

Re: Live from Maple Grove Raceway - NHRA Auto Plus Nationals

This is what Maple Grove need to invest in to stop water saturation in the sportsman pits area, it's call a tile drainage system, a sort of "plumbing" is installed below the surface of agricultural fields, effectively consisting of a network of below-ground pipes that allow subsurface water to move out from between soil particles and into the tile line. Water flowing through tile lines is often ultimately deposited into surface water points—lakes, streams, and rivers—located at a lower elevation than the source. Water enters the tile line either via the gaps between tile sections, in the case of older tile designs, or through small perforations in modern plastic tile.

Soil type greatly affects the efficacy of tile systems, and dictates the extent to which the area must be tiled to ensure sufficient drainage. Sandier soils will need little, if any, additional drainage, whereas soils with high clay contents will hold their water tighter, requiring tile lines to be placed closer together. This problem has happened in the past and will happen in again, why not invest a small amoun of money now to stop having this problem every couple of years. Or change the race to a week after the U.S. National. In a business the size of NHRA, you would think that someone would have the brain or at least heard the old saying " to make money you have to spend money"!!! Just my two cents. Claude

The right call would have been to: watch the weather forecast and realize that with the past month's rain, predicted weather forecast and the past issues with the sportsman fields, postpone the sportsman portion of the race on Monday(Tues. am at the latest).

To do so would have been financially considerate of the Sportsman racers. All of you that are praising NHRA and the local track management may not be such suck a$$es if you had just towed 8 PLUS hours (one -way) and then got stuck with your hotel rooms for the week.
I am guessing that the field conditions could not be accurately a$$essed until Wed. Late afternoon (after the majority of Sportsman racers have already made the tow)?

I wonder what "enhancement" this latest abortion will now lead to?

So you want the track to invest major $$$ in a field they use a couple of times a year on a field they don't even own? Say what you want about MG's management but they're not stupid.

You're right MG management aren't stupid, we are. 10 acres for $22.000 isn't much for the satisfaction of knowing that if it rains the racers won't be bogged down. Look I enjoy MapleGrove, one of my favorite dragstrip but for me to drive 18hrs both ways, is not my cup of tea, to watch the John Force Traveling show. Once other people start feeling the same way and figure they can do something better with their time, than the damage will done forever. CR

Maple Grove does not own that property. It's owned by the farm. They knew before we got there we weren't parking on the grass.

Hey cicero819.
Why don't you buy the track ?
You seem to have all the answers to fix it and make it into a real gold mine. With the huge drop in the US dollar vs. the Canadian dollar, it should be a real steal for you.

J Thomas, like the great prophet Rodney King said " why can't we just get along"eh! Seriously our dollar is tanking just as fast as yours. It was a suggestion, if you're happy with the latest events than more power to you. Just to make a point, I really love that corner of the country, I use to plan my holidays around the Keystone, great track, great people but mostly after the problems at last years race where NHRA and Maple Grove kept everyone in the dark and not even have the common decency to communicate to it's spectators and racers what was going on, this year same thing. I feel for all the sportsman racer who have been at the track for more than a week or have spent their hard earn money to drive to a parking lot just to be told to go home or stay but they won't be racing this week-end. MOHNTON, Pa. - Racing is on hold here at Maple Grove Raceway because of rain.
The second round of Funny Car competition had just finished when a light, steady rain began to fall. Keep watching for updates. Maybe they will have to run the pros with the sportman next weekend? Tom

Couldn't have said it any better! Cost me alot of time and money also.
They knew it wasn't happening and they dragged us down anyway. From Lex's mouth at that meeting (we were trying to be optimistic) How about be REALISTIC and use your heads. They could of said... try to wait to come down as long as possible and we will make a decision by wed afternoon.
I was sitting with people at lunch wed that received phone calls from a D1 worker saying this race was 90% cancelled! So we called the track after we got off the phone with a D1 employee and they said it's still on so come on down! That Fried me more than anything!
I WILL NOT go back!
I understand things happen. My anger comes from the lack of communication! With all the media outlets that are out there and the reality of what was going to happen, NHRA could have given alot of people more info and saved many racers Money and Time!
Also Thanks to Keith O and Chuck Veach for Giving Them an Earfull at the meeting!!!!!!

Steve Williams 10-02-2011 08:59 PM

Re: Live from Maple Grove Raceway - NHRA Auto Plus Nationals

Given the current situation, maybe being cancelled was not a bad idea after all? The hotel/motel cost would have been wasted like it was for so many, but it sure beats missing work and costing you more vacation time and still not running at all. Bad situation for all involved. Calling it off Monday or first thing Tuesday would have saved many racers the expense, but many got stuck anyhow in the attempt to park early. I am not defending anyone at the NHRA or track personnel for not suggesting a rain date for sportsman earlier, or worse for them a withdrawal from the event, but, what drives this circus is money. Never look away from money the saying goes. This is the traveling circus and that is what makes it so special to give them your money and not have a chance to withdraw. A bad deal all around.

Re: Live from Maple Grove Raceway - NHRA Auto Plus Nationals

I just refreshed this weeks weather forecast and noticed that they are announcing rain today/tomorrow with perfect weather through till next Monday. Hope NHRA and the pros don't get to run till Wednesday, then they can understand how it feels just to stand around and wait for "someone" mother nature, to let them know when they can race! Hope they don't go broke on unforeseen hotel and associated costs, not to worry boys, I'm sure NHRA will find someway to get us sportsman racers to subsidize your losses! Maybe NHRA will just give the "trophy" to the fastest car!
