2004
Well, it was the middle of June before I found a final round Pontiac appearance. Peter was RU at the Pontiac Excitement Nats. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop Unless Pontiacs won a lot of smaller races, it was a bad year for Pontiac Super Stockers. :( So, I'll add 2005 results to this post. Decided to look at a qualifying list. At Phoenix, Ken Shawver was #6 @ - 1.080. And, there were several Pontiacs running below their index. So, the Pontiacs were running OK. But the drivers were not putting together enuff good packages to win a lot of rounds. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2005#indextop OK, at the Mile-High Nats, Carroll Warling was #14 @ - 1.113. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2005#indextop He made it to the semi, then cut a slow light. But hey, we've all done it. For whatever reason, you just can't cut a great light every single pass. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2005#indextop At the Sports Nats, Ken Shawver was #10 @ - 1.072. I've said it before. But this has to be one of the best running Pontiac powered SS cars of all time. It consistently qualified well, for a lot of years. Peter Biondo is on the Q-list. Russ Abrams is also listed, with a '91 GT/FA Bird. I think he ran a '73 SD455 Bird. So, does anybody know if this GT Bird was Pontiac powered ? https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2005#indextop Peter won this race, with a .008 light ! https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2005#indextop That's it for 2005. Without the div race results, and results from open races, Stock/SS combo races, and all other races which involved Pontiac SS cars, the race info is very limited. So, again I ask, is there some online source for these race results that I don't know about. The reason I keep asking these questions is because I assume that some of you guys may know of race info sources that I am not aware of. |
Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
2006
At Phoenix, Keri Angeles ran a 9.76, & Don Kennedy ran a 9.85. Joel Larkin was also on the list. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop Peter won the Gators ! https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop At the Spring Nats, J.B. Clegg ran a 10.40 & won his SS/JA class. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop At Vegas, Keri was #19 @ - 1.047. Don Kennedy was .977 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop At this Carquest Nats race, Ken Shawver was #2 @ - 1.098. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop This reminds me of something I've seen in recent years. Nowadays there are LOTS of quick Stockers that can run quick enuff to run under their SS index. And I've seen some Pontiac Stockers do just that. As long as they don't have to make a heads-up run, they can win the SS race, while running in legal Stock form. This is the earliest race I've run across, where a Pontiac Stocker ran SS. Have run across several races from the early 2000's where some events would run either Stock or SS, but not both. So, for those who had Stockers that would run under their SS index, if their was a nearby race they wanted to run, that was running SS, but not Stock, they could simply enter their Stocker, in the SS class. That's exactly what happened at this Sonoma race. Leo Glasbrenner entered his Stock '68 Bird, in SS/JA class. Was #49 @ -.264. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop He actually made it to the 4th round. Was beat by the eventual winner. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop At the Northern Sports Nats, Ken Shawver was #4 @ - 1.095. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop I thought this Q-list was very interesting. They must have had very good air. LOTS of cars were more than a sec under. Sal Piacentini was #23 @ - 1.057. Another interesting entry was Al Vanis, in a '77 Bird. Al had won the US Nats in Stock, in a Pontiac powered Ventura, back in 1974. Also won a nat event at Englishtown in '03, in a '77 Lemans. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop Also had some good air at Vegas, Carroll Warling was #9 @ - 1.310. Don Kennedy was #43 @ - 1.160. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop |

At Englishtown, Sal Piacentini was #21 @ - 1.023. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2007#indextop He made it to the semi, where he got treed, with a .007. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2007#indextop At Norwalk, Monte Howard drove Ken Shawver's '78 T/A to #24 @ - 1.029. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2007#indextop Lot's of quick cars at the Mile-High Nats again. Carroll Warling was #7 @ - 1.303. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2007#indextop At the Northern Sports Nats, Monte Howard was #40 @ - 1.068. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2007#indextop He Made it to the semi, and cut a great .004 light, but went too quick. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2007#indextop At the Torco Nats, Sal Piacentini was #13 @ - 1.053. And looks like Peter was back in the Hatari Bird with a #14 @ - 1.050. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2007#indextop At the Fall Vegas race, Carroll Warling was #10 @ - 1.267. Don Kennedy was #42 @ - 1.130. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2007#indextop Several quick Pontiacs, but no race winners. |

At Pomona, Don Kennedy was #18 @ - 1.051. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop At the Spring Vegas race, Don K. was #16 @ - 1.105. Keri Angeles, Joel Larkin, & Art Peterson were also on the list. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop At the Spring Nats, Johnny Duncan was #53 @ -.860. Since somebody said he always ran a Pontiac engine, I assume this '95 Bird had one. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop At the Route 66 Nats, Jeremy Duncan was #19 @ -.919, in a 4th gen Bird. So, since he is from the same home town, can I assume that Jeremy is Johnny's son, & therefore the car was Pontiac powered ? https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop At Englishtown, Sal Piacentini was #21 @ - 1.055. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop At Norwalk, Monte Howard was #17 @ -.934. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop Wow ! At the Mile-High Nats, Carroll Warling was #2 @ - 1.437. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop At the Toyo Nats, Sal P. was #26 @ - 1.018. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop At the Carolina Nats, Sal P. was #16 @ - 1.012. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop At the Fall Vegas race, Carroll was #6 @ - 1.362. Keri was #54 @ -1.068. Don K. was #68 @ -.996. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop At the Pomona Finals, Keri was #30 @ -.976. Stacy McCarty was #36 @ -.926. I tried to find a pic of Sal's car to post. The only one I found was on a site that won't let you download their pics. But, it appeared to be a '77 Gold Formula. I ASSUME it is the same car that Mike Morgan has now, which has 350 Pontiac power. |

Just a little trivia phil monteith was one of the first racers to deep stage back in the sixties early 70's in his 69 ra4 firebird

Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
Phil's 1st car was a new 63 4cyl tempest followed by a 65 gto tripower automatic convertible

I think I read that Nunzi has a '63 Tempest, with one of those in it, which has run 11.70. Engine supposedly has all factory parts. Here's a short article about Nunzi. At the Cajun Sports Nats, John & J.B. Clegg got their '74 Bird running a bit better. It was #33 @ - 1.067. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop At Fontana, Ryan Schloe was #24 @ -.852. The reason I mention this is because I have him listed driving an early 2nd gen in Stock, in other years. And, we all know that some guys/families switch their cars from Stock to SS. And, some use the same car, but put on different body parts, so it'll pass as a different year model. Then, most Pontiacs get passed around from one Pontiac racer to the next. With all this in mind, who knows the story on this particular Bird, which is listed as a SS/IA '71 Formula. It's running quicker than his Stocker. So, is it the same body he was running ? Did he switch over to the 455HO engine ? https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop I'll just take time here to ask about SS tires & suspension. We all know that there are currently lots of Stockers running quicker than 10.00, with legal 9" tires. So, obviously, many SS cars that run slower than 10.00, can get by with 9" tires. And, if they're the GM leaf spring F-body cars, they can get by with the CalTrac bars, rather than going to narrowed rears, tubs, big tires, & some sort of ladder bar or 4-link set-up. But, I still see some 10 sec SS Pontiacs running big tires. Since the low 10 sec Stockers hook up enuff to do huge wheelies, and some need wheelie bars on the back, why do guys still feel the need to run huge tires ? Wouldn't the cars actually run slightly quicker, using the 9" tires ? Sorry for the dummy question. But hey, if you don't know something, you just don't know. At the Midwest Nats, Bill Rink was #12 @ - 1.010. I suppose Bill has the quickest '74 GTO straight SS car ever, by far. I think he has posted that he switched the car over from Stock, because NHRA had added so much hp to it. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop At the Thunder Valley Nats, Johnny Duncan & Peter Biondo are near the bottom of the list. I assume the 2000 Bird Peter was driving is the Hatari car, with a 428 engine. Does anybody know when the Hatari was switched over from the 400, to the 428 ? Has it ever had a 455 in it ? https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop At the Summer Nats, Carroll Warling was #3 @ - 1.163. Billy Ingels was #40. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop At the Route 66 Nats, Bill Rink was #19 @ - 1.068. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop At Englishtown, Sal P. was #19 @ -.949. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop At the Mile-High Nats, Carroll Warling was #3 @ - 1.347, with his '74 GA. Not only was this car a nat record holder, I suppose it was one of the quickest Pontiacs ever, against it's index. Don't know what a list of the top 10 or 20 Pontiacs would look like, if listed by the numbers they ran, in competition, against their index. I suppose there were a few which did, or at least COULD have run more than 1.5 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop At the Toyo Nats, Vic Santos was #33 @ -.883. Sal P. was #37 @ -.867. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop At the Fall Nats, J.B. Clegg was #35 @ -.895. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop At the Northern Sports Nats, Bill Rink was #30 @ - 1.064. Bill Eadelis was #89. There ain't very many SS GTO's left. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop At the Pomona Finals, Ryan Schloe was #47 @ -.740. Joel Larkin was next, at #48 @ -.733. Art Peterson was also on the list, with his '69 GTO. As far as I know, it is the only '69 GTO I know of that has been in active competition, in recent years. I know of a couple of '68's that ran Stock. Hey, back in the day, there were lot's of '69's in action, especially Judge models. But, it's all just part of Pontiac history, now. :( https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop |

Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
Well ya'll, I'll have to tell on myself now. I don't know if I can blame old age, or just lack of computer skills.
But, I was almost thru with 2010 race results, when I had to take a break. So, I THOUGHT I hit minimize. But, when I came back, to continue, that tab was gone. I suppose I accidentally hit the X, instead of the minimize. Anybody else ever do that ? Anyhow, because of this, from now on, I'll post a very small amount, then edit and add a little more, and so on, til the post is complete. So, when ya'll see a very short post, with only a very few results, just know that the post is not complete, and I'll be adding more to it. 2010 At the Winter Nats, looks like Art Peterson had the only Pontiac powered car on the SS list. It's the only '69 GTO I know of that has been in either Stock or SS competition, this century. If ya'll know of others, please post that info. Back in the day, there were lots of '69 GTO's in competition, especially Judge models, sponsored by Pontiac dealers. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop Looks like Joel Larkin had the only Pontiac on the SS list at the AZ Nats. I can remember lots of races we entered where we had the only Pontiacs. That was just part of it, for us. Just made winning a little better. :) https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop At the Cajun Sports Nats, J.B. Clegg showed up with a stick Bird. I suppose that was the 1st year that '74 had run a stick. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop At the 4-Wide Nats, Peter was #2 @ - 1.022. Due to info just posted, I assume the engine was an iron head 428. Sal P. was #46 @ -.699. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop Sal made it to round 4, where he left a tick too quick. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop Peter made it to round 5, where he got treed. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop At the Spring Vegas race, Don Kennedy was #22 @ -.781. Joel & Ryan were on the lower half of the list. John Angeles was also on the list, driving a '69 Bird. For those who may not know, John co-wrote a couple of books on Pontiac performance & racing. His '69 RAIV Bird was said to be the 1st reg SS Pontiac 400 powered car to dip below 10-flat. His daughter, Keri, was driving on that occasion. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop Ryan made it to the semi, but cut a bad light. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop At the Midwest Nats, Greg Meyer was #7 @ -.899. Lynn McCarty was #55. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop At Fontana, Keri was #20 @ -.571. Ryan & Joel were on the list. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop At Topeka, Carroll was #16 @ -.800. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop |

I assume that most Pontiac guys who have raced very long at all, have experienced that. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop At the Mile-High Nats, Carroll was #3 @ - 1.131. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop At the Lucas Oil Nats, Greg Meyer was #12 @ -.721. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop At the O'Reilly Nats, Stacy McCarty was #20 @ -.753. Below are some pics we took at the Cajun Nats, back around 1978. There was a white SS/K T/A there, wearing "For Sale" signs. Art & Keri were also on the list. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2011#indextop So, unless I missed somebody, there were 8 reg SS Pontiacs entered in Nat events that season. They were driven by Keri Angeles Pari, Art Peterson, Sal Piacentini, Carroll Warling, Ryan Schloe, Joel Larkin, Bill Rink, & J.B. Clegg. There were 7 Pontiac powered GT cars that were driven by: Johnny Duncan, Peter Biondo, Don Kennedy, Greg Meyer, Stacy McCarty, Casey McCarty, & Robert Cruzen. I may have missed a car or 2. I know that in years just prior to this, John Angeles & Monte Howard were on some nat event Q-lists, as was Vic Santos. I'll look back over recent years, & get names of some I left our here, then edit & include them. I realize there may be some Pontiac powered SS racers that didn't get any or very much mention, because I had only nat event results. But, beginning for the 2012 season, DRC has results of div races also. And again, if ya'll know of Pontiac SS cars that did good at races I don't mention, please post that info. |

So, this race will be called the LOS 7-1 race, since it is in div 7 & is the 1st LOS race of the season. In case of rainouts, sometimes the sequence numbers may not be in the correct order. This shorter race ID will require less time & space. So @ LOS 7-1, Don K. was #3 @ -.925. Ryan was #28 @ -.605. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2012#indextop @ LOS 7-2, Don K. was #2 @ -.949. Don K. was #6 @ -.905. Leo Glasbrenner was #14 @ -.826. Don't know if Leo had Pontiac power at that time, or not. Who knows ? Ryan was #34 @ -.600. Art was #61. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2012#indextop Don K. won that race ! :) https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2012#indextop At the Spring Vegas race, Don K. was #3 @ -.947. Ryan was #29 @ -.697. Art was #54. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2012#indextop At the 4-wide Nats, Peter was #63. It seems that for some races, Peter uses the strategy of his rival, Dan Fletcher, by purposely qualifying low. I know this is a Pontiac thread, But since I've been lookin up race results, Dan Fletcher is the name that has popped up, most often, in the later rounds of races. I assume he has an awesome list of racing accomplishments. I'm sure that everybody who has kept up with Stock/SS racing knows about Dan. But, I'm just getting a look at some of what he did. So, at some point, I'll probably do some research & get all the info on his racing career. But, that's for another time, & perhaps another thread. This thread is for Pontiac powered SS cars. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2012#indextop Gonna start skipping a lot of races, unless there is a Pontiac that qualifies well, or one that makes it to at least the semi. @ LOS 3-1, Bill Rink was #6 @ -.980. Stacy was #12 @ -.955. Monte was #42 @ -.800. Greg was #44 @ -.793. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2012#indextop @ LOS 5-1, Robert was #5 @ -.782. Bill was #12 @ -.668. Johnny Duncan was #66. But the reason I'm including this Q-list is because of the next 2 cars. The 1st is a 1970 GTO, driven by Bill Eadelis. How long has it been since ya'll saw a '70 GTO SS car, before this one ? The other car is what I think is an SD455 powered '73 auto trans SS Bird, driven by Russ Abrams. I know that Bob Michael & Don K. ran one. Who has run one, in this century ? Maybe there is one, or some, that I don't know about. Those SD455 parts are so rare & expensive now, it's not likely that anybody else will try to build a SD455 powered SS car, in the future. Don't know if any of the GT guys will run one in the future, or not. I suppose that for many guys with enuff money to do this, a rare expensive set of head cores is not a problem. So, maybe we WILL continue to see a few SD455 headed engines on the track. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2012#indextop @ LOS 1-2, Vic Santos was#12 @ -.851. Don K. was #14 @ -.822. But, now I'm more inclined to believe that the 350 mentioned was probably a Chevy 350, that was in the car when he bought it. But, that is mere speculation on my part. Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
So, from the results I've seen, here is a list, in no particular order, of the drivers of the quickest V8 Pontiac powered Super Stock cars of 2014. Some run low 9's. Some run 10's. The slower cars have run well against their index.
(1) Don Kennedy (2) Robert Cruzen (3) Leo Glasbrenner (4) Peter Biondo (5) Vic Santos (6) Greg Meyer (7) Carroll Warling [8) Bill Rink (9) Keri Angeles Pari. (10) J.B. Clegg I suppose, as of today, the last 2 names are the only ones on this list associated with 9 sec non-GT Pontiacs. Keri has run the '69 RAIV Bird well into the 9's. And, as we'll see from results from later years, J.B. has driven both a '73 & '74 SD455 Bird well into the 9's. Because there are several Pontiac Stockers that have run real low 10's, it shouldn't be big problem, at all, to get those cars into the 9's, if taking advantage of the SS rules. I suppose there just hasn't been anybody intersted in doing that, yet. I'd love to see some D-port head, non-GT Pontiacs into the 9's. There are several Pontiac guys around nowadays, who could pull it off. All that's needed is somebody with the money, who wants to do it. Just guessing that several Pontiac guys would be happy to help with such a project. So, somebody do it, already ! If I win one of the BIG lotteries, I'll put up the money for the build, myself. :) I realize that all these numbers mean very little, to nothing, to most non-Pontiac folks, since there are other brands that will run quicker, in almost any class a Pontiac can run in. But, because Pontiacs make up such a very small percentage of SS cars, to me, that makes it real special when I see a Pontiac that gets a class win over other brands, or sets a nat record in classes dominated by Chevy, or other brands. I suppose it's part minority brand pride, and part just because I've always loved Pontiacs. :) |

Can't often win a round, with a slow light, unless the other guy really messes up. But, the dial-your-own deal is what keeps most guys racing Stock/SS/brackets. If the quickest car always won, only the very richest racers would win. They'd buy the best parts & hire the best people, to produce the quickest car. I reckin that's the basic difference between Stock/SS and the Pro classes. I've heard lots of guys say how much they don't like breakout racing. They seem to feel macho when they say they only do heads-up racing. Problem with that is that MOST of 'em don't have enuff money to build a winning heads-up car. Just thinkin out loud. Please forgive. |

As always, info about additional Pontiac V8 powered wins, not covered here, is welcome. Still several quick Pontiacs. In today's competitive racing, it takes exceptionally good drivers to go rounds & win races. That's why the really good drivers have lots of div & nat event wins, during their racing career. I think this is the 1st time Larry Maxwell's GT car has turned up on a list I posted. To me, it's a very interesting build. The car is a '68 Bird. Looks like it could be a Stocker. And, it was apparently built to run just a hair under it's index. Has a Pontiac 350 for power. Just presumption on my part, but I assume that the 350 is all a planned part of the build, so that a big-tire set-up won't be needed. Yes, I know that Bill Rink & Mike Morgan are going quick with Pontiac 350's. But, Larry's 350 build is different. Dan Fletcher has proven, beyond any shadow of doubt, that you can win races without being the quickest car in your class. On almost every list I've seen him on, which is now quite a large number, he is very near the bottom, just a safe distance below his index. But, who knows, Larry may be planning a quicker set-up, at some point. |

I run my 91 Formula as a GT/FA with an oval port 454 Chevy engine . The 1973 Formula I have has always run a 455 SD , since I bought the car in 1982 . That car was orginally purchased by Rock Running . Basically a race car its entire life .

You mentioned Rock Running. I'm always interested in knowing why so many guys who have raced Pontiacs for a good while have switched to other brands. Some say it's just because Chevy parts are so much cheaper, so many shops know how to build 'em, & that good factory Pontiac parts are now hard to find & expensive. But, many of the Pontiacs I've mentioned here have proven that some Pontiac combinations are quite competitive. And, a "Pontiac" engine can now be built without using any original GM parts. The block can be aftermarket, at least for 400 & larger engines. The 428's can use alum E-heads. And the Q-jet can also be Edelbrock. And, I assume that a Pontiac engine can be run in most any GM body. The Cobalts I've mentioned are examples. So, a guy with a good Chevy bodied car, could run a Pontiac engine, in GT. I love the GT rules. As all here know, unless you're building a "dime rocket", any competitive SS car will cost big bucks. And many here probably go racing in high dollar rigs. So, even if a Pontiac would cost a few thousand more to build, that would not be a problem for most who can afford do this type of racing. Just a casual observation. |

OK, this season will catch us up on recent Pontiac SS race results, which are available on DRC. At the Winter Nats, Leo was #22 @ -.825. Larry Maxwell got his '68 Gt Bird down into 10's for a #45 position. J.B. Clegg got the #48 position, in John's original '73 SD455 Bird. Art Peterson was #57. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2019#indextop I think the rebuild of the Clegg '73 SD455 Bird made it's debut at the 2018 US Nats, with a 9.746, good enuff to make the field. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2018#indextop At the AZ Nats, Leo was #19 @ -.634. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2019#indextop @ LOS 7-1, Leo was #18 @ -.689. As usual, I didn't list all the nat & div events, even some where Pontiacs were entered. And, as of this minute, I don't know how to look up results of any other smaller and/or special events. So, again I ask that any of you guys who know of events I haven't reported on, in which any Pontiac V8 powered car may have done well, please post that info. Thanks ! |

I realize that LOTS, probably MOST, here don't give a flip about Pontiac powered race cars, or anything to do with Pontiacs or their history. Their feelings about the subject, may be similar to mine, if somebody started a thread about the history of Chevy powered racing. There have been so many hundreds of thousands, most likely millions of Chevy powered drag cars, that I am really not interested in reading any more about 'em than I already know. Just because I don't care to read more about Chevy power, doesn't mean I have anything against the people who race Chevy powered cars. Same goes for Ford & Mopar racers. There have been lots of famous Mopar racers. I remember one particular race we attended, where the announcer seemed to be extremely excited to have Ronnie Sox there, driving a factory Mopar, IIRC. Over & over that day we kept hearing "Ronnie Sox" this, & "Ronnie Sox" that. Don't know how many times he said that name over the loud speaker. But. it was enuff that, thru the years, every time that name has ever come up, we both say"Ronnie Sox, Ronnie Sox, Ronnie Sox". From what I remember, Ronnie Sox was a great & famous Mopar Driver. "...The first thing that caught my eyes was a staple of every media guide, a list of the sport's winningest drivers. Here was the score heading into 1972: Ronnie Sox: 15 Don Garlits: 7 Gordon Collett : 7 Dave Boertman: 6 Gene Snow: 6 Don Prudhomme: 5 George Montgomery: 5 Ray Motes: 4 Don Nicholson: 4 Bill Jenkins: 4..." I also remember "Miss Mighty Mopar", Judy Lilly. She won LOTS of races, in factory Mopars. But, since I'm a Pontiac guy, one of the best memories I have of Judy, is the fact that Jack Mullins beat her, with his Pontiac wagon, in the finals of the US Nats, in 1975 ! I suppose it's all just a matter of brand preference, for some. Then others just like drag racing & don't really care what brand the body or engine is. Different strokes. :) |

Not even close to the total number of big races Pontiacs entered during those years. But, it does cover some of the quicker Pontiac SS cars, during the period. And, some of 'em are still racing, as we'll soon see ! :) |
Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
Yes, I realize that MOST here are not interested, & will never look at hardly any of these results.
BUT, for those few who are, & for those who someday may be, the links are here. So, I suppose that as long as this site remains & keeps this thread, and as long as the links to the DRC files still work, anyone interested will be able to get a small glimpse into Pontiac V8 powered NHRA Super Stock drag racing, since 1998. :) |
