Is this correct?? To qualify for a bracket event such as the Bracket Nationals, a car/driver needed to be "sponsored" from his home track, which in this case could be Lebanon Dragstrip. In otherwords, that driver/car had to have points to qualify, ie: many passes down the track. Where I'm going with this, is ......pictures. There HAS TO BE pictures of this car out there. Who were the track photogaphers @ the time? Can there be a name attached to this car? liteweight |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Correct,
In September 1977, Each Track would send a Group from; * Super Pro * Pro Eliminator * Heavy * Street To the 2nd Annual Bracket Nationals @ York US 30 Dragway Competing Tracks * ATCO * Beaver Springs * Cecil County * Colonial Beach * Dragway Park * Empire {New York} * Hampton * Island * Keystone * Lebanon Valley {New York} * Maple Grove * Maryland International Raceway * New England * New London {Connecticut} * New York National Speedway {Long Island, New York} * Raceway Park {Englishtown, New Jersey} * Sanair * 75-80 * Strato-Rods * Suffolk * US 13 * WestHampton {Long Island, New York} * York US 30 Besides 'Individual Winners' there was also a 'Track Championship' in each Bracket based on Points. |

September 24 & 25 {Saturday and Sunday} * Super Pro........................ to 10.99 * Pro Eliminator....... 11.00 to 11.99 * Heavy..................... 12.00 to 13.99 * Street...................... 14.00 and up When I remember that Dart in Mt. Kisco, at the Service Station next to the Mt. Kisco Movie Theatre, it had an 11.10 or 11.40 shoe-polished on the windshield. |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Paul
You've confirmed rumours I've heard of that black Dart in Mt. Kisco being slow From what I've been told the nick name of the owner "Two Scoop Lido" came from the fact the car had a second hood scoop that was grafted to the top of the original scoop of this car. ******************* I NEED TO KNOW THE OWNER'S NAME****************************** &/or Who was Lebanon Valley's track photographer &/or who was the track announcer? &/or names of racers that competed @ Lebanon durring this time frame &/or ANYTHING that even MAYBE of little revilance liteweight |

lightweight maybe it was when I spoke with you earlier this year , the guy ken wright that did not give up much info to you on the phone is a nephew of Charlie Castaldo. he was the one who told me to scoops real name , it was another italian last name. I will try and call Kenny to get this guys name . ken came to me because he has been looking for the car that two scoop had and the road led to me and my dad, ken is also old enough to tell some very intimate stories about uncle Charlie and his wife among other things. I do know that you to did not hit it off to well on the phone according to him so I will try again to get what I can out of him. |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Daryl,
I'm still digging. Talked to my mother, and she said one her best friends married one of the 'Lieto' boys. They were from Mt. Kisco, but moved to the next town North, to Bedford Hills. There were several 'Lieto' boys that my mother went to school with in Mt. Kisco. It could have been one of the Lieto brothers sons that raced the Dart. He worked at the Service Station in Mt. Kisco, next to the Mt. Kisco Movie Theatre. Probably from 1976 thru 1980. Paul |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Thanks JIMI for anything and everything you can and are doing to help Daryl.
You are correct that this turned into one if not THE leading LO23 Dart forum. Also, this topic began the Nostalgia Forum on Class Racer. A lot of good things have happened because of "Daryl's Dart Deliemma". The good news is that WHEN his "quest for truth" is solved this topic has taken on so many faces it will continue. Isn't this fun? Paul, I can't believe you are "this close" to possibly bringing the two ends together. With you and jimmi and the new/old info you both have brought to the forum, I just feel this is coming to a CORRECT end for Daryl. |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Paul
Lost in translation. "Two Scoop Lido" as previously thought to be a nickname, translated to an actual last name "Lieto".... "Two Scoop Lieto". And one of them actually worked at the same gas station where the black Hemi Dart was seen at. Well done Sherlock!!!!!This is the most progress I've had in more than a decade. Your on a roll. Keep throwing those dice my friend. Jimi Thankyou for hanging in there with me. I appreciate the effort your putting into this. Your right, it would be alot easier if those pictures would of been available, but, on a side note, alot of other good things have happened due to this thread. I'm not going to give up this quest, but it's sure been a long time coming. Keep me informed on Ken Wrights info To all involved Thankyou for keeping this thread alive & well. Couldn't have done this without your inputs. liteweight Haven't posted a picture lately. This is one of my favorites http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3ac5e8ef.jpg |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Daryl,
Might you be able to refresh our memories about the black Dart being spotted at a gas station that one of the Lietos worked at? Thanks |
Re: Original hemi dart information
The Best Bet,
Is to try and get Track Results from Lebanon Valley Dragstrip from 1977. That is the primary track that guys from Northern Westchester went to in 1976 and later, Dover Drag Strip had closed in May 1976. |

The closest I've been so far is with Paul C. who was from that area, & remembers seeing it himself. now as far as the possibilities of this black Dart being mine, there are some things that are adding up. Mostly that when Tim Hennessey purchased this car from Lou Vignona, the original hood scoop was "screwed up" as he put it,& needed to be replaced. The hood itself remains original as far as I know. Jimi has confirmed when his dad got it, it had a scoop moulded onto the original one. I'm thinking it was probably covering a tunnel ram at one time. Maybe Jimi can comment on what the car had on it, induction wise, when Lou purchased it, but I don't remember if someone told me. Both Jimi & his father did say it was a complete Hemi car when they got it. The drivetrain was removed & Lou was going to either use the engine in one of his cars or have it as a spare, again, I don't remember which. I do know that when I ran the numbers on the trans. it decodes to a 1968 Super Stock ONLY transmission. Is it the original to this car?? More than likely, but no way of proving it at this point. The engine itself is still around, & Jimi has told me where it may be located, but, again at this point there is no way of proving it's THE original one to this car. So I'm leaving that piece of the puzzle completely alone for now until we get this puzzle fiqured out. Sure would be cool if it was tho wouldn't it. liteweight |
Re: Original hemi dart information
lightweight it had a tunnel ram and two dominators the old style one with the velocity tubes cast in.

Daryl,

Re: Original hemi dart information
Charlie,
The "Canned Heat" car is explained in my post on page 226. It was not an original car. It was owned by Lou Biggs, out of the Belleville, IL area (St. Louis, MO area). I ended up with some of his left over parts in the early '80's. The color picture is probably at the "old" Gateway International Raceway in Madison/ East St. Louis, / Fairmont City, IL., or whatever town they were claiming at the time. You can see the spectator cars setting up on top of the canal. The track has been totally rebuilt, and runs the opposite way, and is called Gateway Motorsports Park, and hosts an NHRA National event. An interesting thing about the parts I got from Lou Biggs, was that some of them came from Lou Brock Dodge in East St. Louis, IL. Lou Brock is the Hall of Fame baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals, and also owned a Dodge dealership in East St Louis. I have not seen the 2nd picture of his car, but the color pictures are on page 205 and 206, in this thread. This is probably just some "worthless knowledge", which I specialize in! Dan |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Liteweight,
I talked to Dave Koffel at PRI, he said he had a guy that had a good history of all the cars, probably worth making a call to him in Ohio next week. He also said his wife Susie has a scrapbook with all of the cars and their original owners. Hope this helps, Wayne Kerr |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Just In,
The 1968 Dodge Dart {Lieto car} was 'not' an LO23 Hemi Dart. It was an original 1968 GTS 383 Dart. It was all black, with no lettering. Someone put in a tricked up 426 Max-Wedge in the car, and it had steel fenders with Fenderwell Headers. It had a Cross-Ram on it, with a 68' Fiberglass Hemi Hood. Lieto or ? switched it over to a Tunnel Ram, and changed the hood to accommodate the Tunnel Ram. It had a 'full' Roll Bar in the car. The Dart also had a narrowed 8 3/4" Rear in it, with the rear inner fenderwell's tubbed. It ran 11.40's in the Pro Eliminator Bracket. |

Thanks for all these updates guys, This is one of my favorite internet topics. I have a lot of family from Utica Ilion. If I liked cars as a kid and asked to go to the drags, I'd a been in deep trouble, lol.

Re: Original hemi dart information
