Larry and Patsy, your pictures are just awesome.. We cannot tell you how much we wish we were with you on this journey. We hope we are part of this trip next year!! Last year in Kingman, Arizona, there was a Blue Beacon truck wash that did a really nice wash job for us. I can't remember which truck stop it was, but it may be a Petro. Then that drive going into Vegas over the bridge at Hoover Dam was just awesome. Good luck in Vegas.. Thanks so much for all your posts.. So good for us to relive that beautiful scenery. Since you have some time to kill before Vegas. Why not come on over to Bakersfield this weekend. Lots of Nostalgia cars.

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

Joe and Alice, We are in Kingman now getting fuel and I can see the Blue Beacon from here. And boy, does our motorhome and trailer need cleaning up! So after fuel and a wash job, we are on our way again.

Hey Rod, we have reservations at the Rio for this weekend. I don't think I will tell Larry about Bakersfield!

Larry & Patsy,

Thanks for the great travel log of the USA. You have really made me want to take a road trip to see our beautiful country. Hope you have good luck in Vegas, both at the track and tables if you indulge. Look forward to more pictures later. Have safe travels.

Thanks Again.

Larry, if you like prime rib, do yourself a favor and go to Jerrys Nugget on Las Vegas blvd. Ask any of the locals for directions. You won't believe the size and how good it is, plus very reasonable. And here I am eating hamburger LOL

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

We are here in Las Vegas! We arrived Wednesday afternoon and after turning around in the parking lot of the drag strip, we got parked over by the Nascar track in the holding area. They say we will be here until probably Monday and then we will go to another holding area by the drag strip, then park on Tuesday. Already here are Buggs and Bob Dennis, Mike and Paula Cotten, Phil Montheith, and 10 John Force rigs and several other pro teams with a leftover mix of IRL rigs and the big TV. The motorhome performed flawlessly after we had the jake brake re-programmed. We went down a 6% grade for 6 miles and never hit the brakes or exceded the speed limit.

We went downtown with Mike and Paula last night so I didn't get anything posted, but here are a few shots of the trip from Williams, AZ to Vegas. As usual there were all sorts of amazing scenery on the way that pictures don't do justice for. Here are a few:

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

Hopefully if you come to Las Vegas, you won't be as stupid as I was last night! We were playing at the 4 Queens downtown, and I had won $120.95 which I printed a ticket for. Then the ticket (I thought) came right back out and it said on the machine $$$ only. So I went to another slot machine around the corner and went to put the ticket in when I notice it said .20. Long story short, the machine took my $120.95 and gave me back a ticket for .20. I walked off thinking it did not take the ticket. Someone walked up to machine and cashed out the ticket 1 minute later. It was my fault for not noticing, but I told them at the 4 Queens that I would recommend nobody gambling there because they have thieves lurking!! Anyway, I am sure there are thieves at every casino--but this is a warning--be careful!

Well we are going to check in at the Rio for a few days and actually be vacationing instead of racing!

More later.

The Fremont Experience is indeed awesome, and the 10:00 PM Queen tribute is absolutely great for us old rock and rollers..

A few thousand folks, some of whom just might have been drinking a little bit, all singing "We will rock you" at the top of their lungs is indeed worth experiencing.

Larry & Patsy ~ If you get a chance drive out to the Hoover Dam and the visitor's center/museum there. It's really interesting and amazing to see how that was constructed.

I've been enjoying your pictures and commentary of your trip.

I figured your favorite place to eat would be PF Changs or something since you get to use two sticks. :D

Patsy, one night try to go to Nora's. It's an Italian place that is good and low priced. It was recommended to us about eight years ago by Nicky "Jegs cook" and now we don't leave Vegas without going there. 6020 West Flamingo Road. It's off the strip but always crowded.

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

Well we have just been relaxing and enjoying the casinos the last couple of days. I haven't even taken a picture! We did try out the Blueberry Hill Restaurant yesterday and ran into Dic Geary there. The food was good. We have also tried the Buffets of Buffets for the last day. $44.95 for buffets for 24 hours at 7 different places. If you bought just 2 meals you would pay that much. We also went to see "The Rat Pack is Back". It was a pretty good show.

No, Dennis we didn't try out the zip line downtown. It didn't look like fun to me at all. I don't like heights. And Larry didn't know if it would hold him!

Well more tomorrow!

Patsy, if you like downtown there is a real nice steak house at the top of Binions. Nice and quiet, old school waiters and very good food at a reasonable price.

Larry Hill 10-22-2011 03:55 PM

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

Floyd, we have eaten at Binion's on previous trips to Vegas and that is definitely on the agenda for this trip.

We just went out to the track to check on the motorhome and a few more people are here, but still not a lot. They should be parking us on Tuesday.

We are going down to the pool now for a little sun. It is nice here. It was too hot to sit in the sun in Phoenix. You wanted to stay in the shade all the time. Looks like it is going to be in the 70's for the race. Looking good all week.

Well we went out to the track and dumped the motorhome over at the Nascar track and got ready to pull in and get parked. Still don't know whether it will be tomorrow or Tuesday or Wednesday. Nobody is out there yet that can tell you anything. As we were leaving to go back to the hotel, we saw Toby Lang arriving at the track. I haven't seen his name on the list, but did he win the race last year?

Well more tomorrow. I will try to get some pics of the awesome facility here in Las Vegas. We will be out there to stay tomorrow.

Larry Hill 10-24-2011 12:20 PM

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

Well we are back at the track for the next 2 weeks! Nothing much happening out here today. Looks like it will be tomorrow to get stacked and parked on Wed.

Well the jets are flying over and are really impressive. President Obama is supposed to be in Vegas about noon. They say he is flying into the public airport, but with Nellis Air Force Base right here, I wouldn't be surprised if he will be here. I will try to get a shot of Air Force 1 landing if it is here.

More later.

Well I have discovered how difficult it is to take a picture of a fighter jet taking off or landing. I just took a few shots but you will have to look for the little black dot to see the planes. Maybe I will get the hang of it before the week is over.

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

Well it is another beautiful day here in Las Vegas. The rumor was that we were going to start moving over and stacking this morning at 8, but it is almost 9 and no word yet. They say it is like a land rush when we start moving with people trying to cut line and all. But right now nobody is going anywhere. Lots more rigs have moved in overnight and they are running out of space here, so hopefully things will be moving soon. I will let you know when we move.

Larry Hill 10-25-2011 12:34 PM

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

Well the official word from the racers who went up to the office to see what was happening today is that nothing is happening today. They are going to start stacking at 8 on Wednesday. So I don't know where everyone who is arriving today is going to park. It will be a busy day tomorrow by the time we stack, park and tech. I guess NHRA couldn't afford to pay a person today to help us out a bit. So they will work them til midnight tomorrow (probably on salary) so they don't have to pay any extra.

Well Larry and Wes have gone to the Shelby Museum and Factory. Larry wanted to see how they made the "paper cars". Another boring day. I need to clean up the motorhome. Maybe I will put out the slides and go ahead and do that today.

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

here is a nifty email I received today. I still dont comprehend why they want to create some mad rush in one hours time.

From: Chris Blair
Sent: Tuesday, October 25, 2011 9:51 AM

As a reminder to all sportsman racers, the line-up and parking schedule for the NHRA Big O Tire Nationals will be as follows:

Wednesday, October 26, 2011
7 a.m.: All sportsman rigs will be moved from the holding area and will line-up on LVMS loop road leading to the North Sportsman Gate.
8 a.m.: North Sportsman Gate Opens and pit parking begins.

All line-up and pit parking is conducted by NHRA Pit Control.

Toby Lang 10-25-2011 06:58 PM

Re: "Live" from our Southwestern Swing

I'm guessing it has to do with the last sentence:

"All line-up and pit parking is conducted by NHRA Pit Control. "

Maybe Chris wanted NHRA to foot the bill for the cost of personnel and security to have us line up inside the track earlier than Wednesday.

Just my guess. All I know is it's gonna be a cluster tomorrow morning!
