Re: Class Nationals event planning

Mike, thanks to you for putting on this event...and your efforts to make it the BEST
EVER!!!

I will be there...one way or another...hopefully with a race car....

Know that you've spent MANY hours putting together the racers' side of things...

Wondering if you've had a chance to look at putting spectators in the stands?

Not trying to be critical here...but just read the thread about the future of the sport...

It's a tough task at best...given we're in the 21st Century...with so many "gizmo's"
to take up our time...

What are your thoughts on promoting this event for the spectators?

Remember...some of these people could be entrants...in a future Class Nationals!

As I posted in one of those threads, "Guess we'll find out next spring... I plan to advertise the Northern Class Nationals toward a spectator market. New territory for me, but I believe there will be a return on investment, and I believe in THE SHOW -- that's you."

Among the many things we talked about in our meeting at the track yesterday was looking into the various media markets in the area (radio, billboards, retail stores, online advertising, car shows, cross-promotion of events, etc.) From the get-go, I've expected to do distribution of discount spectator tickets.

For those who don't know this...
The original USCN did quite well, spectator wise, for this type of event.
There were hardcore fans for all over the country in attendance.
I suspect this will happen again.

I drove 500 miles to Byron for the USCN to spectate, rather than bracket race my street car at my local track 25 miles away that had an IHRA Divisional (didn't have a Stocker yet). I definately plan on being at Columbus for the Northern Class Nationals.

With mine, and both parents, health issues, It's hard to plan even a week in advance at times nowadays, but if all goes well, I will be at Columbus to support this awesome event.

My sons and I flew out from Seattle for Alex's party in '01. They're grown men now, so I can't speak for them, but I'm planning on flying out for this one too. It promises to be another landmark event. My 2 cents.

Michael, are you going to run every class, or are you going to lump single entries into a combo? To be specific, if I'm only one there in V/Stock, do a get a bye, or do I have to run against other single class entries?

Nitro Joe Jackson 07-01-2013 09:02 PM

Re: Class Nationals event planning

Marty, we havnt talked about that yet, but let me tell you this much, if i have a say, NO Combos for class run offs. I'm old school to much, lol
but it is Michael's show so..............

Re: Class Nationals event planning

If there's time. How about both? Give a trophy (or the equivalent). To all classes that are represented. Then run all singles off the indexes in a combo type class (off a qualified ladder). For a special award?

Michael Beard 07-01-2013 10:19 PM

Re: Class Nationals event planning

Marty, we'll see if we can get Tom Gould to come up and give you a run! ;)

Every Class runs, regardless of the number of entries in a given class. There will be no class eliminations 'combos'. If you single for the Class win, you won your class, just like the old days. All Class winners will receive an Iron Tree trophy. I plan to make Class Winner decals as well.

Art, we will be running Quick 32 Stock and Quick 32 Super Stock CIC races after Class Eliminations on Friday.

I'd be happy to do the Best Appearing awards for Stock as well as Super Stock. If you have a Best Engineered award we will also provide that as well.

Michael, I am planning to be there. It is a 600 mile drive for me from Bridgeport, CT, but I drive farther than that to go to Charlotte and Indy every year; and this sounds like it should be a truly great experience.

Here's another look at Iron Tree trophies. I do the artwork for Beaver Springs Dragway's awards, done by Crown Trophy of Hanover, PA. Royce Miller of Maryland International Raceway originally commissioned the hand-painted resin sculpture.

Bub Whitaker of Whitaker Racing Engines and Burtonsville Performance Machine is the latest to throw support behind the Northern Class Nationals' Friday night Quick 32 Comp-style CIC races. Whitaker has pledged $300 toward the Stock Quick 32 purse. The Laurel, MD-based house of horsepower can be reached at 301-490-3131.

The top 32 qualifiers in each eliminator on Go-Fast Friday will earn the right to compete in the FREE ENTRY Stock Quick 32 and Super Stock Quick 32! The purses will be sponsor-supported, so we challenge other engine builders and performance industry companies to add to the pot! It all goes to the racers!

Qualifiers will be paired on a sportsman ladder, handicapped off their class index, and then the first to the finish line wins! A -1.25 under CIC (Competition Index Control) trigger will be in place, similar to that used in Competition Eliminator. (Remember, we will be running off of what is essentially the "old" NHRA indexes... add .30 to the existing NHRA indexes).

This independent event has no AHFS, so it's time to let it all hang out! Who has THE baddest Stocker and Super Stocker on planet Earth?

Michael,

What about the front wheel drive classes. All to run NHRA or will the seperate IHRA classes, such as the automatic classes run? Will all class winners teardown? This would be fun. I haven't been to National Trail, (is it still called that) since the 70's.

Like the trucks and fuel-injected combos, FWD cars will run in the NHRA classes. As the owner of a DF/S Turismo, I'm aware of the challenges. I'm not a fan of how they consolidated the classes many years ago, but I would like to do a minimum of 'tinkering' with what has long been established by the sanctioning bodies. Since we will be running off of what are essentially the 'old' NHRA Indexes (current NHRA index +.30), even the slower FWD cars should be able to compete. It's on my "to-do list" to post all of the classes/indexes in the coming weeks.

I'm projecting there will be around 80 different winners in Class Eliminations. It will not be physically possible to tear down every single one. We do reserve the right to do inspections/teardowns, just as any NHRA/IHRA event.

Announcing Staff
I have Mike Bassin (NHRA Div. 1) lined up to announce -- very knowledgeable on S/SS (supplier of an impressive 'history lesson' on the mic at the very first LODRS I ever attended!) Reinhart will likely working the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. I'd love to have Leo come out to enjoy the race. Hopefully he will be in good health and can enjoy some mic time as well. I don't have any contact info for him. I wouldn't mind touching base with him if someone wants to PM me info. I've talked with Unk. I'd rather he be able to race, but if he doesn't have a ride, I'll see if we can get him out here. Mike Carr and I are likely to do a little relief pitching as well. Can't have *everybody*, as staffing is a massive part of the budget, but we will be sure to entertain!

Starting Line
Redman will be bringing his understudy (Bradley, I believe his name is) to aid in starting line prep and maintenance. I told him anything he wants or needs, done! Starting line is priority #1, and Red's in charge.

Church Service
Mike Imhoff from Racers for Christ and God Speed Ministry will be on hand with the good word providing encouragement all weekend, with non-denominational services Sunday morning.

Photography
While we have some finalizing of details to do, it looks like Chip Bralley will be our official event photographer, with a few skilled amateur shutterbugs like Chuck Clark and Tom Kasch among others providing 'visual color commentary'.

Live Video
As announced earlier, Mark Walter and crew of DragStory.com and MotorManiaTV.com will be providing LIVE streaming video and Live Timing from 1320go.com all weekend long. This 4-camera, fully produced coverage is the best in the business! They also archive footage to view on demand. They just did the World Footbrake Challenge in Bristol this weekend, garnering over 28,000 viewers in 73 countries in a single day!

Might not be a bad idea to have both Unk and Mike in the tower. I've been the lone announcer on 4-day events, 14+ hr days with barely a break, so I know what it's like. Mike's a straight shooter, and Unk's a comic foil. Would be fun to run them together at times, and be able to run with just one off and on to give the other some voice rest or help out with other duties.

Sneak peek at the work-in-progress event flyer... sponsorship opportunities are still available, and we will continue to add and expand the flyer as necessary throughout the year. We plan on having the first print run of flyers out at the end of August for Bowling Green and Indy, so the early bird gets the worm, but we'll continue to pursue sponsors all year long, and do updated print runs down the road as warranted. Got lots of irons in the fire as we speak, but wanted to give you a visual update of where we are thus far.

It was shall I say animated. there was so much action we needed everyone of them and then some I also had the privilege of doing the run by run TV commentary for the Kendall oil QUICK 32 and GMPPTOP STOCK races WHICH WERE A SHOW ALL N THEMSELVES and worth the price of admission

I hope Michael doesn't get mad at me for announcing this but all fields will be laddered again, it will be like the Original Class Nationals where we will have different pages and call each page, now here is one thing, I WILL NOT wait for someone that is on page 1 not to show up till the end of page 2 to run, his or her competition will receive a broken single, if someone is having problems and comes tells us, now that's different. Just wanted to give some a heads up.
