Re: Southern S/ss Association

First off, let me say that I'm sorry for being a .90 racer hijacking this thread. I would love to race a stocker , but right now the .90 classes fit my budget a little better. Anyway, I am glad I was there to witness the first race of the Southern S/SS Association. Other than the clean up that was required after the first pair of bracket cars went down the track (and I realize that is something that will happen from time to time and can't be helped), what a great day it was. Jim Woods deserves a big "thank you" for organizing the association and promoting the race yesterday. Gene Garmany and the staff at Lakeland Motorsports Park did an outsanding job of being the host track for the first race and making it run smoothly throughout the day.And last, but certainly not least, John "Hammer" Leichtamer. That man teched all the cars and then worked the staging lane area all afternoon, and I know he had to be tired at the end of the day. A great job was done by everyone involved in this effort.

I'm just glad I got to be there to see it happen and improve my image by hanging out with my "low life" Mopar friends from Grand Island.

Also, I should say "thanks" to Sean Haning for photographing the race and posting the great pictures here for everyone to see. That must be a tough camera you have because I see that you got Sean Ward in a couple of the pictures and the camera still worked after that. Simply amazing.

All of you involved should be very proud of what you have created, and best of luck to you in making this organization a success.

Again, a HUGE thanks to Jim Woods and hats off to the rest of the crew!!! No politics, no protesting, no fuel check, no scales, no hassles!!! For those who missed it, you REALLY missed it!

C'mon....almost $5 per gallon on diesel, then get treated like our division people and Glendora are doing us favors? Screw that, I'm going where the fun is!!!!!

And Lakeland wasn't all bad. I've experienced a lot worse. Besides, I don't remember meeting a track staff as friendly and helpful. Like Jim says, the more we support this program, the better it will get.

I had a ball!! maybe that's why I drove so bad LOL!! Enjoyed meeting Smitty, Hammer, Merrill, Pat "I'm trying not to hit your bumper" Clifford, Reggie Winkles and the other stick racers. Smitty, I still have your shoe polish. Jim Wahl needs to give me a wake up call next time, or get me a GPS for Christmas (you know what I'm talking about HA HA HA!!).

SPORTSMAN OF THE RACE AWARD.

If there was an award for sportsman of the race it would be John Boyer, John showed what all the racers where like at the race. He came to race and was not taking any freebe. Thanks John for being a CLASS RACER.

Gary,

It was my pleasure meeting you also. I really enjoyed myself with all the racers! I even explained how stock and super stock classes worked to a couple of bracket racers. I tell you what I think Drag Racing is the best sport in the world, you want meet nicer people for the most part. I think what we had yesterday was the die hard weekend guys who do it for fun. I didn't see any big ego's yesterday, just guys who want a place to race.
I can't remeber your name but the gentlemen with GT/EA Firebird, I want you heads up when I get the engine in the Mustang LOL! Just kidding, I can't wait to get out there with you guys, I hope we can get more folks involved. I'm working on my mentor John Douglas to come out to a few races, us Ford's are out numbered down here.

For those who don't know, John Boyer's first round competition's car wouldn't start. He elected to go to the rear and wait. Get this! John's crew got his competition' car started for him! Now that's sportsmanship! Way to go John!

Thanks to Jim Woods, Hammer, Gene and Trish from Lakeland Motorsports Park, Gospeed Chaplain Joe Sannutti and everyone else who contributed to making this special event! My brother Paul and I enjoyed hanging out with Reggie Winkles, Rusty Gillis, Gary Smith, Robert Hardee, Mark Ruset and so many other great people! Congratulations to winner John Boyer and runner-up Jay Slane. Great performances from a number of other racers including low qualifier Doug Patrick, Dana Summerton, Rusty Gillis and Rebel Kidd.

Paul and I are excited about this series and hope to have our car ready for the next one! We especially appreciate Jim Woods for his vision and his labor to make this happen.

Re: Southern S/ss Association

I would like to add that was the most Fun I've had at the races in a long time. Congrats to the Mongrol and hope to see these races continue. Dana was shaking pretty bad after each pass but she is excited and ready for the next event. Her very first race and gets in the money and cuts a perfect light Wow!!! Tina says she is honored to help make this series a success. There was absolutely no difference in the race compared to a Lucas race except I had $ in my wallet when we left and it was a hour between rds. instead of 3-4. Can't wait for the next one!!!!!
