Re: lets have fun...who is the best Jr. stocker of all time?
Insofar as "seeing" that Final round between Cureton's sedan delivery (hydramatic-equipped) and the ex-Jere Stahl KILLER wagon of Wally Nissen (3-speed manual) the interesting thing was this:
"little" George knew it was sprinkling rain already, and knew he'd need every microsecond he could muster, so he staged at about a 15-degree angle... not enough to get caught, but crooked enough to increase his rollout SIGNIFICANTLY.... LOL! Sedan deliveries with hydros had terrible traction problems. I was sitting in the top row of the stands, looking down at this and as I became aware of the rather severe angle George had staged at, I said to myself, ("That sly devil!!!!") LOL! I couldn't believe that the starter let him pull that off, but it was about to rain BIG TIME, and they wanted to finish the race with no delays. What an exciting end to a REALLY great race!!! "little" George got 'er done in grand fashion that day! I won't forget that one... OH... the angle-staging didn't matter; the other guy redlit. |

Bill -
Jack Mullins used to do that angle staging in his '52 Oldsmobile all the time. He also ran 8.45x15 tires on the front that were 30" tall. Talk about a running start!! By the time the lights came on he was already doing 5 mph. (exaggeration) (fdl) |

Re: lets have fun...who is the best Jr. stocker of all time?
Tom Sheehan, Really neat photos. Especially of the John Dianna stuff. I lived in Indy Speedway and went to the shopping center to watch tech. I saw Johns Wagon pre crash. Everyone headed to Muncie for the Wed night Test and tune. I drove up and it was sprinkling. Dianna did multiple burn outs to the line. As he ran the run it rolled up in the pile you see in your second picture. His truck is the COE behind the crashed car.
He was taken to Muncie Ball State hospital and released in am. A guy I know climbed the fence in the AM and removed the Black Plate license plate and had it on his wall. John took stuff home and built the Sedan delivery. When I bought the Delivery the guy in Indy gave me the plate. Still have it.....Fast Wagon and FASt Panel. |
