Checking for a transbrake is easy. First see if the car will backup without pushing a button. If it will not backup, look for a wire going to the transmission and trace to its source. That will show the car has a transbrake. Dropping the pan is just the icing on the cake.

I didn't even know anyone still made a transbrake that you had to hold the button in for reverse?

How does a racer go from zero points at the Sports Nationals to number one qualifier at Tulsa the next week?

There are a lot of transbrakes that don't require a button for reverse, but almost all of the ones you'll find in the Super classes do.

That's generally the difference between a 'bracket brake' and a quicker 'pro-tree brake'.

At any rate, testing reverse won't help determine if a transbrake is installed or not.

I always thought that if you see a car relax the rear tire or car takes a set then it has a transbrake. I would think it would be easy to spot one on the starting line. At least from what I have been involved with at big buck bracket races.

Of course, you are correct, Jeff.
But that's not the situation here. Nobody was accused of using a brake on the line.
The question is whether Mr Hale had to use a button to back up, after he had rolled too far forward on the scales. He says no he didn't . NHRA tech says he did, or might have. Guess who won that go 'round.
