Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
How Many People who suggested support for a Mod class have sent a note to NHRA TECH department? I have contacted two tech officials with reference to the thread and will call when back in the office. Lets go guys. The squeaky wheel DOES get attention. Espceiallly if they see a line of entrants developing for their Points meets, etc.

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
I'm not a newbie to the web-site nor to old school modified racing, but this is my first post...... First of all I'm a huge fan of the 70s era modified racing and this would be something I could see myself thinking about getting involved in. If a class like this would ever make a comeback, I like the idea of spec heads and all the other steps to keep costs as low as possible. I like the fact that you would have to use the clutch with each shift. With that being said, I don't think a class like this should have automatic transmissions. When people talk about the old modified classes you hear about the heavy flywheels, dry hops, the high rpm launches and getting air in almost every gear.
If this is something to be taken serious, I would start a new thread to get a buzz and some more feed back. I hate that the old modified Corvette thread got hijacked, but it did bring up some good stuff and by the way, I love seeing the modified Corvettes and the videos of the stick cars. Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Anybody remember who, from Houston I think, had the white Modified Vette with two pigs going at it painted on the deck lid, and said "Makin Bacon". Was it The Wop Shop?

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Ed,
I think it was Earl Moscarelli It was USA Racing Engines that was called "The Wop Shop" |
Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
I think that was the car. Did you see the pigs? LOL
It was an older. ( like '58?) white Vette. Don't know if was Earl's, or a customers. I think I still had my Jr Stocker, so probably 1976 or before. |
Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Earl's Corvette was a '63 driving by the late Rick Kelly. Pete Smith ran out of the Wop Shop with a '62 that was initially white for a very short time until it was painted red. Shileno & Coleman ran a white 58-60 Vette with Paul Parker driving it. Find out a couple of years ago of a current Dallas-area chassis builder who ran a 61-62 Vette in Modified Eliminator. Ed, you would probably know who I am talking about. I have the guy's e-mail somewhere.

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Todd,
I think Pete always took the RPM up to the "sonic" range! I always liked watching him run. |
Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Adger, that is an understatement!! I was on the starting line at LaPlace standing next to his car when he left at just over 11 grand. Pete was hard on those little motors.

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Pete Smith was (hope still is) a cool guy. First time I saw his tach tattle tale after a pass I almost fainted. Thought I was really zinging my C/SM Camaro leaving at 9000. LOL
Moving to Modified Eliminatot was sure a learning experience. Learned a lot. Learned to not run aluminium rods too long. Stayed over until a Monday to finish a points race at Baton Rough due to rain one time. Pulled a rod into in the final against Coleman Roddy's black Camaro. Had a new set to put in it, but thought I didn't have time. Told Jeanie "one more race will be OK". She was SO happy with me. LOL The ride home was kinda quiet. |

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Joe,
I literally was probably standing next to the guy filming this or very close. We would get to the gates EARLY so we could get a fence spot. To be able to relive a weekend like that just one more time.... |
Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Thanks Joe, I love going back and watching the old races.

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Found a Feb 4, 1977 National Dragster in a pile of my stuff and looked through the National Records. What I found was impressive to me. It was listed that Modified racer David Surles held the ET record for G/Gas, H/Gas, E/MP and the F/MP speed record. I know some will say that G/Gas and E/MP were both 11 pounds and H/Gas and F/MP were 12 pounds, respectively, so there was an easy jump between the classes. Still impressive. That must have been one bad-*** Corvette back in its day.

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
My dad Kenny Rose was best known locally for his Hemi powered 55 Chevy that he ran in C/Gas, but he wrenched on a G/Gas 58 Corvette for Bob Widmeyer in the mid to late 70's. He often told me of how Division 1 was like war every week in Modified Eliminator.
After he quit racing the 55, his last car was a Hemi powered 1960 Corvette that I believe he purchased from Harry Huntzberry in 1974. He sold that car as a roller in 1998-99 sometime to a guy named Jim Frost near Cumberland, MD. |
Re: OLD Modified Corvettes

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
My '66 a couple of years after I got it and removed the snorkel hood, most of the lettering, etc. It appeared to be an old gasser build: aftermarket doors, front clip, no bumpers, wrong grill, clutch linkage still present, strong chassis build but dated. I've redone most of it in a an SS style now: factory doors, '67 BB Stinger hood, trim, dash, new paint(no lettering). Raced mainly at nostalgia and Heads Up Index events in mid-Atlantic area.
Just my attempt to keep the old days alive and have a little fun! http://classracer.com/classforum/pic...pictureid=3268 Pardon Mr. Bishops watermark, we love ya' Dave |
Re: OLD Modified Corvettes

Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
Jimmy Hickman's Corvette was destroyed in a crash at the old Florence Darlington Dragstrip in 1989. Top end crash then caught fire and burned to the ground.
I loved that car. Chip Johnson |
Re: OLD Modified Corvettes
