Re: Original hemi dart information
So, at long last Daryl seems to have found the origins of his LO23:
This.... http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93...psae5aed2f.jpg Quite possibly became this.... http://www.mbmopar.com/Members/Klass...lHemiDart3.jpg Sooooooo......where was it from the beginning until it's known resurface? Daryl, how about an update from the time you have knowledge of until now. I know its a rehash but for the late comers and newcomers it might shake a cloud of dust out of a memory somewhere. |

Great idea Charlie, but, I've been requested to do an article on my car for a book that will be coming out named "Lost Muscle Cars" through Car Tech Books by fellow member here Wes Eisenschenk including some pics from Geoff Stunkard. http://www.cartechbooks.com/ It will include the complete history, as I know it, from day 1 to present. A lot of the info will of course be coming from this thread, & The Manhattan Speed Parts thread where Paul C. literally blew me away in his fact finding mission. Theres still a lot of questions that I need to be answered to fill in some of the blanks, but I'm very confident we've got the right car. Now, we gotta fiqure out why this car just sort of fell off the planet from the late 60's till Lou Vignona's documented ownership in the early 80's. So, I don't want to take anything away from that article. Stay tuned folks, I'll keep you updated on the status on that book On a little different venue, I'm going to throw a plug in here for a new book being released this July by the walking Hemi encyclopedia hisself Geoff Stunkard. It will be titled HEMI: A History of Chrysler's Iconic V-8 in Competition. Geoff asked me to have some input on the 68 Super Stock Hemi Program, so needless to say I was honored to help him out in a small way in this project. Here's a link to the facebook page that Geoff is teasing us with till it hits the news stands: If you don't facebook, it's a public page, & you can still view it. Geoff has spent a lot of time researching for this & will no doubt be the best chronicle of the iconic Hemi to date. https://www.facebook.com/hemiracing?fref=photo http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/...ps59d4220c.jpg Geoff is also now in the planning stages of doing a book on the Dick Landy story, so keep your eyes open for that one. I know it'll be top shelf material !!!!!!!! liteweight |

Who would have guessed it would go this far and become the history lesson it has? Killer about the book deal. If it becomes a movie can I be Charlie Castaldo? We share the same name and he was mentioned a couple hundred times throughout this adventure so I could get some good screen time. :) That bucket list of mine still has you at a tie for #1 with a trip to Frank Hawley's school. I wonder what the next big adventure is going to be? Going to take something special to top this one . Thanks for letting me be a part of it! |

You can never turn back the hands of time. A very special moment for me indeed. I am glad you were there to capture the moment!!! http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6fa9fa6d.jpg That decal on the vent glass is an original, not a reproduction, personally given to me by Dick durring his visit up here a few years ago. I have a couple of those left over autographed by the "Dandy" One. Definitely one of those " REALLY COOL" items for me. |

I found an envelope of photos this past week with a few Hemi Dart pictures.
Just had them scanned for your viewing pleasure. Summer of 1973 or 1974 a friend was going to the US Nationals and my older brother asked if a few photos could be taken of the quarter panels of a few original Hurst prepped Hemi Darts. The white Dart appears to be an original from the Hurst facility. Do not know what to think of the "Hurley Automotive" Dart as the forward edge of the wheel opening has a curved shape to it. Original photos by Joe Archer from Omaha, Nebraska. |

Looks like the leading edge rear wheel opening on the Hurley car retains the original Hurst profile while the white car has the common modification of trimming the fender/rocker to gain more tire clearance once you go to taller/high growth slicks. The only other way was to move the diff back on the leaf spring perches. |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Here's a template which was made from a documented original wheel opening.

Re: Original hemi dart information
Welcome here Doug. Great pictures you found. Thanx for sharing. Do you have more?
About the rear openings. There are probably not 2 LO23 Darts out there, even new, that have the same opening shape. They were modified by hand, torch, & hammer at Hurst. I'd even go to the extent the DS was different to the PS. Below is a pic of mine. They've really been opened on the forward side, but still retain the original outer tubs. Available tire diameter started dictating opening size. There weren't tires available of size till the early 70's. Anyone recognize the ID on that white Dart? liteweight http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6fb6950f.jpg |

Steve That forward opening looks WAY to much for a Hurst mod. it looks like it goes past the forward section of the wheel tub. Hurst only modified to the stock front lower section of the tub. liteweight |

I have been watching this website and thread for some time now but most of my photos I post on : www.hemishootout.net Since I was able to find these three images and get them scanned I figured that the real interest would be here. I do have a few from 1989 of some cars that might not be original LO23 or BO29 code cars. You guys might get a chance to figure those out. The two images of the entire quarter panel were also posted on the Hemi Shoot Out Facebook page last evening and a guy chimed in making the statement that the Hurley Automotive Dart is an original Hurst prepped car. If that is the case my hunch would be that at some point after delivery the car owner had the forward edge of the wheel openings further radiused with the curve added. It appears that the trailing edge of the wheel opening is the same as on the white Dart. |

Re: Original hemi dart information
After 6 1/2 years of this forum trying to find the history of Daryl's LO23 he has FINALLY found the beginnings of it's life on earth. While there is still a decent sized gap in reported ownership, now there is hope.
Post number one of Daryl's and the following it developed is what eventually led to the beginning of the Nostalgia page. I joined in on this way back when I was remembering a car from my teenage days and just decided to google "68 Hemi Dart" and one of the links brought me here. This is the first LO23 I ever saw. The sound of that Hemi to a 16 year old gearhead...... too cool ! And then, through the history lesson this topic turned into, to find that it is still alive and well.....even cooler ! http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...g?t=1230728498 Your Dart is close enough to the right color Daryl. With some Torque Thrust wheels and some vinyl lettering........ :) |
Re: Original hemi dart information
Thanx for hangin' in there. It's been a long road for sure. I've looked through literally thousands of pics over time in the hopes of finding something of resemblance to my car. That one pic of the Dented Dart at least put a definite origin of it. with the detective work from Paul C, he was able to attach a name of Pete Marzec to it through information from Pete's friend Al Ripolla. The trail has kinda ended there tho.
But like Charlie said, there's a huge gap from late 68 to early 80's where this car just doesn't show up anywhere. Don't understand that one, xept it must of been parked in some guys garage. The search continues......................... Here's a pic. of a LO23 from day1 showing the Hurst modded wheel well. For anyone who is trying to replicate this, put the pic on an overhead projection & enlarge it till the wheel diameter is 15" & you'll have a pretty accurate template. liteweight http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/...psuhfenuxt.jpg |
