Re: HP adjustments after the Dutch - posted
Art, I think that's about enough from you. Having a heated discussion about someone being illegal is one thing. Making a comment like that about one of the Division 1 tech guys is something completely different. Kurt is a very knowledgeable tech guy and has a passion for class racing greater than anything you could even fathom. Those guys work their asses off and it is their job to interpret the rulebook to the best of their ability. Why don't you crawl back in the hole you promised you were going in when the Combo was introduced and NHRA decided to stop giving away free trophies.

Here's a question that you have to ask yourself about the racer who's valves were too small. Do you really think that he thought that his motor wasn't to spec? I know that if I thought that, I'd would not even go close to the record lanes (not that I could now) knowing that there was a tear down coming. What happened there on the valves was not a "blatant" foul. If he had bigger valves(not close to spec) with ported heads I'd say take a year off, but this is just a mistake.
Also, there are no excuses for a car to be light after a qualifing pass. If you are more then 5 to 10 lbs light, you should be DQ'ed from the event. I'm an old school racer that had Greg X. as a tech director in D1, if you didn't follow the rules to the letter, you were out. Now, we have a bleeding heart NHRA that allows people to get the rules over rided to the way they need them to be for them to race. BTW, I own a slug, but I'm happy with it. I had a similar thing happen to me at the gators a few years back. Won class. Sent to tear down. Everything checked good except the intake valve checked .001 too small. The valve was worn and really tuliped. They bounced me and put me on 6 months technical probation. I had to go through reinspection at the next race before I was able to compete again. I did have the correct head and all of the other specs checked good on the head. I replaced the valves and went through inspection at the next race. After fixing the heads the car was .007 quicker at the next race. The mistake that I made was not heating the valve to operating temperature it probably would have picked up the .001 It was heart breaking to loose class that way.

If you get caught with an incorrect sized valve and the NHRA gives you a HP increase, doesn't that validate the use of that sized valve? Then why shouldn't other guys with the same combo be able to run a small valve? You are penalizing the guys who are legit.
They should have taken away any points, $$, and a slap on the knuckles. If you do it again, you get a year off for bad behavior. If it was an error on the engine builders part, the NHRA should let it be known they won't tolerate the situation to keep others from trying the same thing. |
Re: HP adjustments after the Dutch - posted
I respectfully disagree with NJK53, if my engine builder who ever it is, builds something not to spec whether it is on purpose or error. It is still on me as the racer.
If NHRA gives me a penality it is on me not the engine builder who ever you use. After a while I go get another engine builder and his/her rep goes to *****. I do agree on the first part of your post about HP and illegal stuff. I may build a 350/300 combo claim it as a 350/255 and blast the crap out of it. Just kidding JP. |
Re: HP adjustments after the Dutch - posted
Joe, my point is a guy bombed the index with an illegal motor combination. Is it right to penalize other racers with the same combination who are legal?
Or am I missing something? |
